penalty or no penalty we shouldnt have to be relying on a poor decision to beat teams like southampton at home. we are very very poor. i cant see us getting out of bottom 3 now. where r the points coming from? i think we will actually finish 20th. no signs of it getting better. mr lerner? what do u think of that? useless!
colavfc
I'm feeling a bit down....and Villa will be joining me by the looks of it !
MASON_PARKER
Pathetic

If something doesn't change now, whether it be signing players, sacking the manager, or playing the tea lady, we are going down. Even under Houllier and McRubbish I never really thought we would get relegated. But this is just shocking.
Stephen Jay Hawkings
On the way home. Gutted. Missing open goals and clearing the ball in a penalty box scramble with the ball not rising above ankle height.are unforgiveable at this level.
Villa_Grizzly
Don't worry we will be buying some new players from barnet or Northampton town Yipee ! This team is the worst I have seen I am sick of watching this crap
ShaneBlack
Randy hasn't got a clue as demonstrated over his tenure. Pay peanuts and get monkeys. 2013, unlucky year.
Villan444
Who'd have thought someone could get us playing worse than McLeish did...?
MASON_PARKER
Weird one. Yes we had enough chances to win, were the better team and only conceded a "penalty", but nonetheless we need to win games like that. Fully behind PL, but he needs to swallow his pride and have all the experienced players starting games.
SchoolBoyError
Well Randy congratulations on the success of your 3 yr plan of getting us relegated to the fizzy pop league. You sold our best players, bought instability to our great club with bizarre managerial appointments but at least you saved a few quid on wages. Your not like us we will be with the villa long after youv'e gone what ever division its in our blood its our life its what affects how were feeling and what kind of mood it puts us in for the weekend. If your bored and have had enough please p**s off and save even more money. The 5 year plan for the champions league under MON didn't work but congratulations on your 3 year plan. VTID

Chairman Lerner, the lads and the gaffer have quality and heart, but they need help and they need it NOW! Please!!!!!!!

We're down. Must start thinking about how the hell we're gonna get out of the Championship now. Time to face reality.

Were's Gareth Barry when you need him!

Time for a poll - new manager or no new manager.
malacaxeta
Well it's certainly one in the eye for all those who insisted our kids are good enough! Mind you, maybe they would be if there were old heads around to help. I'm going out on a limb here: you can't fault randys start and I kind of synpathise with the cash running out but I'm annoyed so much was wasted on crazy managerial appointments. I don't entirely blame PL as he was given peanuts (though I do think he's cut off his nose to spite his face with bent and war nock and missed a trick with keeping our French midfielder with champs league experience out on loan, even if I thought freezing Hutton out was right). I know enough about PF to know much he is to blame. I'm annoyed some of our kids started acting like Charlie big bananas way before time but that often comes with youth I guess. Nope, I blame the senior players that cost the earth, bleed us dry in wages and do nothing. Ireland and N'Zogbia, Gabby. Rely upon them to step up and show their class and they've let us down badly
revolutionatlast
No one to blame but ourselves (and Randy not giving our manager the tools to succeed)
CDX_EIRE
Let me sum it up in one sentence. One nil down at home to fellow relegation strugglers, lets bring on a teenage striker we bought from Chesterfield for his second prem appearance. Glass is definitely half empty at the minute.
sherlock1874
Awful. But I don't see the point in just giving up as it seems some others on here have. Steps need to be taken but sacking Lambert would not be one of them. That is the reason the squad is so messed up, to many manager changes in the last few years. We really some experience back, I never thought I would ever say this but we need Dunne fit and quick. With Dunne and Vlaar back that would help sort out the back. Some strength is needed in midfield. I also think Bent when fit must play now. Benteke is my pet hate at the moment. Yes has the tallent and can run the show when he wants but he is missing too many sitters and is just awful when it comes to defending corners. He keeps losing his man. Things look grim but its not over yet, plenty of football to be played. Keep the faith. UTV!!
Tallaght Villan
Mr Lerner - ACT NOW and we at least have a chance.

In action and a degree of luck we trust.
cropped
Randy Lerner is responsible for this knowone else!! Sold best players, imployed bad managers and we've seen it coming for months... Yet we've all sat back and said nothing for sake of being branded fickle by other villains!! No baners no protest we're going down without even a whimper!! See you in the championship

Another day far from dreamland

You definitely had the better of the second half and could have won with a little more luck in front of goal.Penalty wasn't one so as much as I am pleased with the points I equally know that we were very very lucky to get them.

Villan444, pay peanuts and get monkeys ? so the wasters at VP for the past 3 years on peanuts ? You want to pay double your tkt price - carry on, your deluded, and got your head so deep in the sand it's everyones fault bar the overpaid ( yes, overpaid dross ), namely Ireland, Gabby, Dunne and our super star striker Bent on Gold plated contracts who cant be moved on because in the teams desperation to buy mediocre players their management teams were able to rip our club off with aforementioned contracts. If you think that is peanuts, would love your job or you to be my boss - cus no doubt you would just pay over the odds for rubbish. If you for one minute think 120 mil + from mr Lerner is peanuts then God help us. 444 it is as much if not all the senior players over the past 3 years who have set the scene for this debacle we see before us. As previously said on this medium by the vocal few last season " we're heading for relegation" when in reality we were 8 points better off at this point last season. Last season was terrible unfortunately we have not jettisoned the over paid dross that infects the club and unfortunately we are in no position to do so. Blame Lerner, blame who ever you want to; just dont ignore the dross players, including the one who was voted player of last season by deluded punters on this particular site !!!
allestreeav
Whilst I sympathise with what Lambert was originally trying to do, the truth is that with the exception of Benteke, the signings he has made have not been good enough. He has had the backing of the chairman to the tune of 20M, and we are going down. No ifs, no buts, we are going down. PL seems to be unable to get the best out of the players at his disposal, and the repetitive long punts up the field that we resorted to today, are not the sort of tactics I want to see. Sack him now Randy, and put Sid in charge to the end o the season. He knows the home grown youngsters as well as anyone. Finally, why oh why were we unable to ensure that Jean II got a fair crack of the whip at Villa. Another waste of money. Ashamed to call myself a Villa fan at the moment, and fed up of being the butt of every other football fans crap sense of humour. Despair....
2big4seatswannastand
allestreeav - you are right. Living in Greater Manchester I get to speak with many football fans who know a thing or two about some of our recent signings. Their verdict at the time we signed these players was as follows;
Ireland. Complete balloon. City could not wait to get rid.
Dunne. Complete p*ss head. City could not wait to get rid.
N'Zogbia. Borderline Championship / Prem player. 3million squad player for (no disrespect intended) the likes of Stoke etc at best

So there has been a continual diluting of the squad for a few years now but less so dilution of wages.

Anyway, the tin lid was to then add Lambert and Yoof. Talk about building a house on sand.

A perfect storm. It is going to take massive commitment from Lerner and some ballsy decisions to keep us up you feel.
cropped
Just got back and am absolutely gutted. I don`t blame Lambert, he`s been forced to build a completely new team with 20 million and the academy. I think he`ll need at least the same again this window and if the rumours about having only 5 million are true Randy is condemning us to relegation. Was Holman injured? Seemed strange to bring Bannan on at half time.
NI Villan
I really don't understand everyone going on about RL spending money, we will end up like the bloody Labour Party did, spend spend spend and fail, I remember everyone saying in Lambert we trust and I also remember saying at the time of appointment that I could not understand why as he was clueless tactically, I watched Norwich half a dozen times under him due to work commitments and tactics were rubbish, I said it to Mr Fear that it was a bad idea to have him, no motivation no leader in the team, he treated Bent like a piece dirt at the start of the season , I bet you wish we had Hutton and Warnock defending because we wouldn't be leaking as many that's for sure, The club is losing money now so what's the point of putting more down the drain, remember Leeds Utd ?
andy3221
I think Cropped is going to really approve of my comment... Our fall from grace can be put very simply; We had an excellent side under MoN but each year we let our best leave and we never replaced them... We all know this thats why we are so poor everyone knows it but its not said enough... We lost Barry he was replaced by Milner in CM and Downing coming into the team... When Milner left who did we get? Ireland (waste)... Downing & Ash Young leave? Albrighton & Nzogbia (even worse)... Petrov gets ill who have? Delph... Dunne for Laursen... Warnock for Bouma... I wont go into the rest you get the point... Id just like people to stop calling for PLs head its pointless he hasnt been given the tools to succeed here and neither did Eck to be fair...
CDX_EIRE
When Peter Risdale aka 'Father Christmas' was at Leeds he brought in players for that club they didn't need and often didn't play. He also put them on inflated wages. A bit like Lerner in the MON years. Now the club does need QUALITY players to play straight away. No team in the history of modern football has been successful without acquiring decent players in the transfer market. There are decent players out there but the club obviously doesn't have the ambition. Lerner will find out this truth the hard way if the club are relegated and he misses out on next seasons EPL slush fund. At least he's got hos boozer-cum-restaurant and that tattoo with the crappy club crest.
VillaWillRiseAgain
From PL's post-match interview, when asked about signings, his reaction told me there won't be any, none of any note anyway. So that's that then. Anyone have any idea of how we're going to get out of this mess?
Stephen Jay Hawkings
As for Bent as I understand it he has been frozen out for non-football reasons. Those who have jumped on the Bent hating bandwagon might like to consider where Villa might be if he had been played instead of put on the bench. For those who think that Bent isn't a multi-functional modern forward you're right. Then again Villa aren't a multi-functional modern team. If you think that putting Bent into the Villa starting 11 is like putting a Mondeo engine into a Mercedes you're wrong. It's like putting a Mondeo engine into a Mondeo. Bent should be a starter whenever fit. Lambert is trying to do too much too soon. Villa aren't Ajax circa the mid-nineties and Lambert should stop pretending that they are.

Pride of Lions
I've resigned myself to the fact that we are down - we've recently played our 2 main rivals for that 3rd relegation place and lost to both of them at HOME! I'll continue to support the team and manager but will not be expecting anything so any results we got from this point on is a bonus and welcome surprise. Yes the ref was terrible and gave us nothing but at the end of the day we are not good enough. Lamberts hasn't exactly got much available to him but I guess he signed a number of them so he has to take responsibility for that. Have some Villa fans forgotten how bad Warnock, Dunne and Hutton were for us? Must be desperate! On the bright side we might win some games in the Championship ..... No?
Lion Heart
The general consesus is that RL was behind the offloading of Millner which led to MON, a flawed but competent manager, leaving. MON appears to have been vindicated. The club has gone from disaster-to-disaster since the Milner decision. Randy Lerner's decision. Houllier, Eck and now potential relegation. MON was generally rubbish in the transfer market and the club wasted a fortune on transfer fees and wages. Nonetheless RL and Faulkner should a) have gotten a DoF to help deal with the transfers and b) questioned MON's transfers earlier. If MON wouldn't play ball they should have fired him. They apparently did none of those things. It is their (Lerner/Faulkner) lack of football knowledge and interest that has led to this mess. To be honest it's better that the club are relegated this season as its a certainty the whole sorry EPL season of 2012/13 willl be repeated in 2013/14. A reprieve now would lead only to the inevitable further down the line.Oh, and those who argue that RL has a right to make a profit from the club, he undoubtedly has. Many other owners of clubs, though, seem to be motivated primarily -- and maybe irrationaly-- by success on the pitch and understand that on-pitch success usually leads to public interest and profits. RL hasn't got a clue.
VillaWillRiseAgain
not even sure players like bannan delph stevens baker and holman are good enough for the bloody championship!!
avfcwills10
Lets have the poll nonetheless. if I hear the word "effort" one more time in a post match drone-on I will personally take him out anyway. QPR just changed manager and its already made a difference. Its not rocket science droogies. Never thought I'd have to say this but I'd actually want to look at Dunne and Warnock for a couple games just to see if they can make a difference. Then if it works out (under a new manager I might add) we "just" need two new midfielders. And if Bent is fit, Benteke needs to be made to play for his place. He has got too comfortable and too greedy. Nsomnia is like a mini terminator sent by Small Heath from the future to stop us winning the world club championship in 2034 (when my kid will be old enough)
malacaxeta
I thought we played ok 2nd half. Benteke is the new Heskey, should of scored. Terrible decision by a joke ref may have cost us our PL status. WE NEED A VERY GOOD MIDFIELDER AND WE NEED HIM NOW!!!! Sell Ireland, Warnock and Hutton and use the money to BUY SOME QUALITY!! Why am I shouting, it's not as if the board read this feckin forum is it.
PiperUK
VWRA Mate i think Randy is not too woried about relegation cos whoever gets relegated gets two years parachute payments and im pretty sure these increase the same as next season TV revenue new deals will, by 70% so Randy wins either way without spending feck all dude!
CLIVETHEVILLAN
@CDX_EIRE - you are right. I do agree. Also @VillaWillRiseAgain - hard to disagree with what you say.

Beginning to run out of options in my mind other than a new gaffer NOW and 20 million on 4 competent players......... or maybe we should just "dust ourselves down and go again" and forgo a shave for a few days. :(
cropped
The parachute payments will increase in line with the new TV deal, but only once that TV deal is actually in effect - so teams relegated at the end of next season will benefit from an increase. It was discussed about including teams relegated in previous seasons (i.e. Blackburn, Wolves, Bolton last year and very likely Villa + 2 this year) but it was felt that this would give an unfair advantage to them over every other team in the Championship. Only teams relegated at the end of 2013/14 will get the enhanced payments as this will allow them to cover the expected increased wages that players will demand once the new TV deal is in place. Payments are also now spread over 4 years, again to prevent any advantage over other Championship teams. WE ARE SCREWED AND IT'S BEEN 3 YEARS COMING!!! He's already shown an ineptitude for the NFL and EPL. Why can't Lerner get interested in Baseball. TWOT!!!!

We need some midfield experience and fast if we dont get point in the next couple of matches wba and newcastle we going down.. Then the problem is will we have the players to bring us back up

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh if i read one more post about experience, its being good enough thats the problem, look at swansea, norwich etc bannan, clark, herd, gabby etc been around for 3-4 years just not good enough
cb_82
I've been a fan for 27 years and I'm only 32, last season was the worst in my memory but as each week goes by this season is edging towards surpassing it. I don't want Lambert out (yet) and was happy when we got him BUT his selections, tactics, substitutions and signings (besides my one or two) have been extremely poor to say the least. Let's just say I'm starting to lose faith. Our squad is the main problem, it's like watching Villa reserves play in the prem every week, definite case of men against boys out there. It's sad when you see Lambert and he looks completely lost on the sideline of late too, which is a worry. How about playing your 'big name' players on a regular basis for starters?? I know a lot of you are against them but at the moment the sides we are selecting to cross that white line just aren't fit to wear the Villa shirt and it's becoming a case of anyone else would be better. Lambert how about a simple 442 with Guzan Lowton Vlaar Clark Baker Westwood and Ireland in the middle, Gabby one side, NZogbia the other with Bent and Benteke up top??!! I know some are injured but we haven't seen anything near that sort of lineup and I'd put my house on it that they'd do a much better job!! Especially if Lambert backed them like he does the lower league youngsters. It's been good work experience for the young boys but it's time for a change before it's to late. Randy is not a fan and does NOT bleed Villa like us.... Get out!!
AdzVilla11
Adzvilla11 that team would have us in the middle off the table, why can't he just play that team, why make a hard job harder, bannan is shocking
kenner
Just waking up to this and I really thought this was the game to turn us around, sadly not. The baggies will destroy us and it looks like we are defeating ourselves with only one obvious ending!! OUCH.
holte ender 1969
I agree kenner, that's why it's so frustrating!! Quadruple agree about Bannan too!!
AdzVilla11
Where is the fight? 16 games to go and we are down? I can't get my breath. UTV Forever

Looking at today's team sheet we look like a low table Championship side. I don't care about Ooo Ahhh missed chances, the last month has been dreadful and half way through the Transfer window no signs of any experienced incoming players. Randy either stump up the millions we need or risk waiting for injured player to return when its too late.
kevinl48
48 points left to play for and we need half of them
leftfoot
What're you on about alllestreeav. The senior players were good under MON. They've become as disillusioned of decent players going and not being replaced. It's pretty soul destroying starting a game and knowing that you've got little chance of winning due to the poor quality and/or lack of experience around to go with clueless managers like Eck. They were all signed under the "we're going places and will be successful" theory. Randy conveyed this to them and has now changed his tune. Your the one with the Head in the sand.
Villan444
444 bet your dad is bigger than my dad !!! Pathetic, the senior players were good under MON, and we won exactly what ? The failings of our management team to sort contracts to suit AVFC is somewhat alarming. My club being held to ransom by players who don't give a damn, sat on gold plated contracts - you cant run a club like that, unless as l said before you want to pay double for your season tkt then write and tell Mr Lerner your thoughts so he can duly raise the prices and buy in the prodigal sons to get us out of the dilemma we are in. Under MON as previously stated we won nowt, so Mr Lerner was going to halt anymore extravagance, bar the acquisition of Bent to dig us out of the brown stuff. Unfortunately Mr Lerner has not got bottomless pockets so the cloth has to be cut accordingly.
allestreeav
A point could be made that freezing out experienced players, almost across the board, has achieved nothing. We are in effect paying these over paid prima donna's NOT to play, so it is not saving us any money and we are worse off in the league than last year. We are also keeping them out of the shop window and making it more difficult to sell them in general or for a decent amout. In summary we are not saving any money by not playing them, having to pay additional money to those brought in to replace them and making our assets unsellable and sinking through the league like a stone. Costs increased performance decreased. What tremendous acumen we have running our club!!!
heavy d
I just looked at the results from two seasons ago - when Darren Bent arrived - after 22 games we were one place higher and three points better off. We then took 18pts from 11 games to be safe five games before the end of the season. Deja vu all over again. If we cannot buy the 3-4 players we need then some of the "old uns" have to be reintegrated and remotivated - that includes Darren Bent, mate. And I dont see that happening under the current coaching staff, unless a gargantuan slice of humble pie is involved (unlikely).
malacaxeta
heavyd agree totally with your views, but be realistic with the so called senior players - when in the past have they shown their seniority and dug in for the team. l for one do not like dragging up old news because it's best left alone, however during Houlliers reign we had a breakdown of communication between Manager and a couple of players who basically made our club look quite stupid with their outbursts in view of the waiting media. And who did we stick with, no not the manager but a couple of overpaid, over priced prima donna's who had/have done nothing for our club bar extract a large amount of money per week. l say play all the senior players to put them in the " shop window", and watch all the teams line up to sign them. However it does not alter the fact that the club have got players who dont care and have and will continue to bleed the money out of the club. Lets not look at the manager in this case but the individuals who negotiate the trumpted up contracts for these so callled " shop window " players.
allestreeav
Lol alllestreeav??? You're on something today son. I'm sure I'm bigger than you but it doesn't matter. We're debating football. We are paying minimal wages and get kids as they're not proven. Great if we've got an established team to bring them on but not if we haven't. Lerner paid for their contracts. If he wasn't sure or didn't have a clue, he shouldn't have. I too am screwing about the likes of Dunne and reo-Coker in the past who have taken the ***** but randy is to blame. Bent wouldn't have had to be purchased if we had a team fit for purpose.
Villan444
You can't blame the players for accepting the wages they were offered. Yes they are tw*ts but letting them earn wages without playing for them means they have won. They win again when they leave on free transfers and are able to negotiate even bigger wages in the absence of a fee. And I don't mean bringing them all back at once, but when you have senior players on the bench and youngsters being brought on as subs instead of them when we are behind in games is pure folly. Talking of contracts If I was a footballer I would love to negotiate my terms with that puppet Faulkner - Lets remember that he was the one who brought Ireland in (O'Neill was gone remember) as part of the Milner deal and put him on 70k a week for 4 years. Why was a man with NO football knowledge buying players in and deciding their wages??? Made me sick watching Milner score for City today when we have to watch Delph and Bannan **** it up over and over again without criticism from the manager and continue to be selected in matchday squads.
