Like the rotation and like the result. I'm looking forward to the report and then a couple of signings come Friday deadline. UTV.

Good result, was expecting the worst. UTV

Highlight of the game was the 3rd goal !!

Just back from the game Ireland was the star man by along way. The new signings all looked good. One worry that was clear there was no width on both sides. No wingers no player that could get to the bye line to out a cross in. Herd was lost on the right side midfield. Delph was poor. Still new a winger .

Ireland should start every game, was gob smacked he didn't start against Everton. Nice to see the stats in our favour with a win, good possession and shots on target. Now for some signings and a good performance at Newcastle. UTV In Lambert we trust

Must fnd a system to accommodate Ireland, Different class,,Really like the look of Holman as well,,
krfeskivilla
Went to the match. Agree Ireland was MotM, Baker was very good as well imo, Burke looked very good in the 15 mins he got. Build up to the 3rd goal was beautiful. We had another 2 disallowed for offside as well, including Ireland lobbing the keeper from about 20 yards while stretching and falling over.

Regardless of opposition, Ireland showed touches an awareness that no one else in our squad has and could be a real asset for us this year...He showed glimpses last year in a real negative and uninspriring set up and we really need Lambert to get this guy firing...He can be a very good link man for us whether thats for bent or midfielders joining in especially as we do not have a great deal of width...I would play him in a 3 with KEA and Herd as I think Herd is limited but will add some much needed bite in the middle...Holman impressed me in the short time he was on and is a useful addition to the squad...Nice to see Bent on the scoresheet!

I said this many times last season - Stephen Ireland should be captain. End of. We should be building our entire team around him. He is utter class and now seems to have sorted his head out. I get a bit *****ed off with the Darren Bent haters. Get the ball to him in the box and he WILL score. He made his goal look easy but it wasn't. Lack of width is frustrating. Wingers wingers wingers. We need wingers to get the ball into the box to Bent. We had the ball in the net 5 times tonight. Would love to see replays of the disallowed goals. Patience fellow Villans. Excited to see who we sign before Friday. UTV!

Oh and I was impressed with Banan's tackling tonight. He was like a little terrier snapping at the heels of everyone. I know it was "only" Tranmere but it was definitely a better performance from BB tonight.

Nathan Baker was absolutely outstanding. MOTM by a mile. Ireland played some lovely cultured football without finding a killer ball which remains a problem.
Villa_Grizzly
Went tonight, it was a good bunch of lads. As other say Ireland was good as was Baker and Bannan put in a shift. Bent was quite poor but did his job and got on the score sheet. I think in the 20+ years of me going to VP 15,000 is the lowest attendance I have seen. Bad times
DO'L
Ive been in a crowd of 8000 at vp for a div1 game in 85..15000 is nothing.
Villanorth
I was too tired to stop up for the match. So I've got up this morning to a 3-0 win! Hurray! Disappointed with the attendance. I know it was only a cup match but the team and PL needs all the backing we can give them.
Pride of Lions
ireland ran the show tonight, made so many nice little flicks and even tho his goal was offside he took it very well! man of the match by a mile. holman impressed when he come on aswell, very direct
avfcwills10
Enjoyed the game, shame about the 15K turn out, put 2nd round against Tranmere, not really surprised. I thought Lichaj and Herd had a poor game, but Holman and Burke looked really sharp when they came on and it's nice to see Ireland looking interested for a change! Bannan tried hard again, but is at best a Championship player, although his corners were pretty good. Couple more new faces before the end of the deadline and I think we'll be ok; Lambert has some building to do though.
juddy
How was Enda Stevens? Or did he just have a quite match?

I find it interesting the number of people who commented on the low gate and who have raised their concerns, but who didn't go themselves. The hypocrisy stinks. It was a fiver for kids at Villa Park under the floodlights. If we were playing Barcelona at 45 a ticket the place would have been full to the rafters. So money isn't the issue. It is the desire. I undertatand all those who can't go due to location, work etc. A brilliant well done to those who made the effort. But it is very simple. You do cheap seats, fill the ground, more good players want to come to Villa to play in front of an appreciative audience and we improve. Ask your self the question. If you didn't attend last night, would you have if we were playing Barcelona?? If the answer is yes then please do not be offended if your support is called part time or you are labeled as a glory hunter. The most passionate of fans come to Villa Park regardless of the opposition. We go to see the Villa. Some fans are loyal and supportive. Unfortunately we need to improve the number of hard core support. We need to turn the part timers and glory hunters into fans who come all the time. Taking away the 1500 Tranmere fans last night, that means only 14,000 Villa fans turned up. It also means that thousands of fans who are season card holders failed to bother. Forgetting the ills of the world, forget making excuses. There are too many fans who simply can not be bothered, but who are happy to moan and whinge when things are not to their satisfaction. UTV. The 19th Minute.
voiceoftheholte
You make some pertenent points voth. However, you should know more than most, that nobody who has followed Villa for the last 20-25 (largely fruitless) years could possibly be labelled a 'glory hunter'.
VillaWillRiseAgain
To answer your question alcoollie, Stevens had a half decent game and it was his cross that resulted in our first goal. He didn't (and most likely won't) set the world alight, but it was a decent performance and hopfully he'll get better and better.
juddy
The last post was a moan. This one is the positives. Nathan Baker has the makings of being a very, very good centre half. I said it on Saturday and I will say it again now. Pair him and Vlaar. Put Clarke into the middle with KEA as the protection in front of the back 4. Ireland was the best footballer on the pitch by a country mile. Some people have commented on the need for width? All the goals came from getting the ball wide and round the back of the opposition!! Darren Bent is a goal scoring genius. He knows how to find space in the box when his team mates have got behind the opposition defence. He nearly took the pegs out with his goal last night. However his game is about sitting on the last man and looking to get behind. He contributes nothing to linking the midfielders with the forwards. This often means when we break forward everything comes to a halt when we get the final third of the pitch as DB9 doesn't then provide the link betweeen midfield and attack. This is a conundrum that Lambert has to sort out. Having a goal scorer is one thing. Using him effectively is another. Andy Carrol, Bentake, Doyle could all be effective target men who link up play to help us get the best out of DB9. Leave Guzan in goal on Saturday. He is better all round than Given. Holman looks a good player. Last night we hit the bar, scored 3, had 2 disallowed and their keeper made a couple of good saves, so overall it was a good job done. Unfortunately the air of apathy created by the fans can often give the impression of a decent performance actually being not as a good as it actually was. Lambert made changes, gave people their debuts and let the youngsters have a go. There was a plenty of reasons for optimism last night. Pity so few have the passion of the 14,000 Villa fans who did turn up.

vwra. I disagree fella. In the last 20 or 25 years (your time frame). We have lifted silverware on a couple of occasions and been beaten in a couple of other finals. We have come second in the league and regularly played in Europe. There isn't another club within a 90 mile radius can come close to that record over the same period. There are over 5 million people within an hours drive of Villa Park. Many are bought up as Villa Fans but only turn up when the weather is fair, we are doing well, or we are playing what some people would call attractive opposition. Part timers or glory hunters, call them what you will, but we have far too many that simply lack the passion and desire to be at Villa Park come rain or shine, regardless of the opposition.
voiceoftheholte
I understand where your comming from voice one of the problems is the early rounds of this competition has been devalued by prem. sides like ourselves not putting out their first teams. I can go back a lot further than the time frame your talking about in division three Villa got regular gates of 30.000 when we went away we usually ended up filling the opposition grounds to the point that every away game was all ticket and we struggled to get in . The difference ? in those days you could see Villa even then one day winning the first division title, these days you cant see it happening even though we are in the top division + the best 11 played EVERY game regardless of what round of the cup it was.Mind you I believe the game then still belonged to ordinary people who could afford to go to every game, now its all about money and with so many out of work or struggling despite the lower prices I have enormous sympathy with todays youth compared with my generation. The advent of football on tv combined with high prices and silverware being the property of the clubs with the richest owners can only spell bad news for the rest of the clubs and attendances everywhere. Anyone living on state pension these days would be hard put to get to one game a season, greedy footballers driving their wages up and clubs costs with them are reducing attendances and untill that bubble bursts I fear attendances will suffer, or the game will become the preserve of those in top paying jobs.I consider myself one of the lucky ones who can afford to go to every game but I cannot beret those who dont go given todays circumstances.

@ alcoollie Enda looked steady enough, tough to really tell, as the oppo wasn't a high standard obviously, but didn't let us down.
The Fear
Merlin. I have to agree with nearly all of your sentiments. However it doesn't seem to have affected Newcastle, Norwich, Liverpool and others who are not in the top four, are from socially challenging ara, but who fill their grounds every week. But I really understand your points. Two things are a major problem. Wages and prices. It is very simple solution. If every player in the country agreed to a 5% reduction in wages then every club in the country could afford to charge a 5 admission fee and there would be no change whatseover to any clubs profit and loss.
