It was ours to lose it and it was ours to tire just as Terry said. Sadly we did both without much of a whimper unless you class Heskey on again as anything more than a whimper?

Ok caste iron penalty and at least two red cards again we can blame as proof we should've been 1-0 up and playing 10 men for most of the match, and 9 for the period we shall now call 'the final Villa flop' which could've made a difference but truth be told, just like Man U we could've been playing 8 men and I'm not convinced we'd have won.

1 decent cross in every 10 attempts is not good enough. 3 shots on target all match is thoroughly pathetic. I could go on and on but I won't.

All that is brilliant about the Villa was on show in the first half, all that is wrong with us - players and manager - was on show all match. Effort, commitment was fantastic...dare I say terrific. They gave their all, but when their all runs out substitutes don't. They stay sat on the bench, just like different ideas stay sat in the brains of other managers.

Chelsea knew exactly how we'd set up, how we'd play and what we'd do. When we had them on the ropes we needed to do something different, something to confuse them, something to shake them up. We didn't, so it was only a matter of time and Chelsea were worthy of their 3 goals...it could've been more and even the most blinkered Villan can only claim a penalty and a red card. Not much in the grand scheme of things is it?

It's easy to be angry over our failings again, the lack of subs, lack of plan B etc etc etc but it's also very easy to be proud of the lads today. The first half was magnificent and all you could ask for. Even the second half when tiredness hit, yes it took it's toll but they didn't give up running, they kept going the best they could even if it wasn't good enough. We were playing Chelsea afterall.

Good mix of emotions at the moment and I promised to do a match report but I'm not sure I can after that, I'm not sure what I'd put. It's easy rambling, I don't have to make sense.

We have hit our level though, our failings, and those of the manager mean we'll get no further. That doesn't mean we haven't done well though. We're in the hunt for Top 6 again this season, we've bagged a final and a semi final in the domestic cups (we'll ignore the Europa feckups) so all in we haven't done too badly...I just go to sleep every night wondering how much better we could be doing and that's what sticks with me.

I said at halftime to much giggle bring on Delph and Delboy and take off Downing and Ash. Go 433 because Chelsea would never see it coming, they'd have a hell's game organising marking because nowhere in their week would they have planned for that. It would've been both a brave decision, but also ridiculous, lunatic and mental. The alternative was what we do every game, which rarely works. Heskey on, I'm surprised we didn't see Sidwell - but the outcome was what everybody could expect and saw coming. Great managers do things nobody expects, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. We do what everyone expects, namely because it's what we've done for months. That's what is stopping me from truly enjoying today, second half we knew we'd lose, our legs were going, Chelsea were coming back into and we did the same we always do. Had Monny done something mental at halftime and we'd still lost I'd be a hell of a lot happier at the moment. At least it would've been an effort.

It takes no intelligence or effort to simply do the same thing we do every match that invariably brings the same bloody result.

feel for Most of the players today, they did well against maybe the best club in the country, but had no chance when Chelsea bought on 3 fresh players and we had near enough the same 11 we've had all year....I've had it now, MoN is an idiot, good Managers recognise when a change is needed, and he never does, I've finally lost patience with him now, we can't blame the referee all the time, these things happen...we didn't score and our players were knackered.

And yes ant, I agree that is where MON is wrong, that is where a Bent Gudjohnson or Keane could have helped us so much at matches like today, but alas, we didn't, the money wasn't there apparently! I think this whole season is fizzling out big time, and reflecting now we will probably be lucky to get into the Top 6!

you guys destroyed chelsea in the 1st half and should have been rewarded a penalty....if you go up 1-0 in first you guys could have won it i believe but better luck next year PS howard webb is a disgrace to think he is our best ref its a joke!!

Oh and John Terry's tackle on Milner was a disgrace and a straight red.The ref booked him so he must have had a clear view of it,that was a worse decision than not giving the pen.

Proud of the lads in the first half .. wondered where the frick they were in the last 30 mins .. hate to agree with Terry but i think he's spot on with his comments . Villa Fans beat Chelsea Fans 10-0 pity Martin didn't play his part . Too predictable.. Thought he might have tried something different for this game but same old story .

Players couldn't have given more. They've played without a break all season and were understandably knackered after 70 minutes. Martin O'Neill isn't learning a thing. It's tactics that lost this game (and crap refereeing). I won't blame the players (though I thought Carew and Heskey were not up to it). I now reluctantly think MoN has taken Villa as far as he can. If he can't change and learn, he should go. I'll get my coat.

I think people are forgetting we aren't a league-winning team, we have only been beaten in the finals by the prems top two teams! Man. u and Chelsea. Champions League teams. We, in fairness, would be asking for a miracle to beat either of those. We aren't really competing up front yet, drogba anelka vs gabby and carew/heskey? Villa need some firepower, that will put us in good stead next season. As for the referee, i'm saying nothing, what happened, happened. I don't think we should be disappointed or down, we played well for most of the game... But what was Cuellar doing for the first goal? running in early for full time or something, odd, he seemed to be running away from the ball.

it seems like a bunch of sheep follow this site:not once this season has anyone mentioned villa tiring but as soon as Terry mentions it the sheep starting quoting it. I was proud of the players , the fans and MON today. loved it all and the only way is up.

With MON's tactic awareness (?) and clever rotation of the team we have indeed reached our peak. If he (MON) looks at his past 4yr tenure he will see a repeated pattern from the way he sets out to play and every other team we play has sussed us big time. Because of this we do need to change and to buy better quality or forever be nearlymen. Proud effort tho and effort was there on show.

Think some of the comments on here are a little harsh... we were beaten by a chelsea side on top of their form, and not only that- had some large slices of bad luck on the way - read the penalty & red card! Let's not yet give up on top-4 too in the league! A reasonable (top6?) finish, and with a final and a semi final, i think it's been a good season. 1 awesome striker and a creative mid and we're there next season
