Well done Phil Dowd. You are an incompetent idiot. That said, you only get so far with your best right back on the bench, and the most likely striker to score sitting next to him. No subs despite the fact the game was getting away from us until 80 minutes. And then we get the old right back Milner job tactic.....fanfuckingtastic.

Maybe now eyes will open, that was there for the taking, even with the twit in charge with the whistle but we are static upfront, certain players go down everytime the wind blows, others bottle the big moments and eventually doing the same thing with the same result (when not useful) surely has to imply you do something different instead of panicking.

We finished the match with 3 strikers on the pitch and that shows we went for it....for those who saw it, they know that isn't the case.

We should be proud of what we achieved today...but be under no illusions....we aren't going further.

I'm proud of the boys...we were unlucky, but there just isn't enough cut and trust to us. Oh to have had a Dalian Atkinson or a even a Savo today. UTV.

First thing Jim Rosenthal said after the match, "Did O'Neill leave it too late to make some changes?" Emmmm yep.

Carew should have started and Young instead of Heskey and Collins

I think we are going forward. We did not look overun today by united and despite an average second half, we did not get out played at any point. Rooney is a top player and he was the difference. Vidic should have been off and that would have been a different game.

Proud of the boys today, getting a bit *****ed off with the negativity around here. Manu are a top team, we did well, Dunne Slipped up for the first goal. and Shrek, will, what can you say? Just hope he stays fit and on forum for the WC

Dowd was unquestionably awful, and surely there will have to be some kind of inquiry into his decision not to send Vidic off. But there is no question of him being biased. He awarded the penalty, and other than the Vidic incident, there was no favourable treatment towards Man Ure. The fact is that we were handed a 1-0 lead on a plate after 4 minutes, but still managed to lose the game. Perhaps the only way for us to have won the game would have been to have a 1 goal start and play against 10 men for virtually the entirety of the game. But that in itself is an indictment on this manager. O'Neill's claim that Man Ure are a great side is almost as laughable as his claim that we played some scintillating football (his words, not mine). Let's not allow the fact that the referee made a ridiculous decision distract us from the truth that we were well beaten by a very average side who put in a very poor performance. Even Rooney, Man Ure's only world class player, played poorly today up until he was allowed the freedom of our penalty box to score with a header. O'Neill can rightly accuse Dowd of incompetence and/or cowardice, but he should remember that he is guilty of the same offences. The difference is that Dowd is guilty of one offence, whilst O'Neill is guilty of systematic, chronic incompetence and cowardice. For the good of Aston Villa FC, please let us recognise that O'Neill is the problem, not one terrible refereeing decision.

good play by you boys , ref was foolish

Incidentally, I thought Cuellar was perhaps our best player, along with Friedel. How is it that a centreback playing at right back can arguably be our best player? Something is very badly wrong with that.
Albarnista
Very disappointed neutral. Didn't think you ever quite got your game going at your usual intensity.

Rooney is a class act! So is SAF! Villa have had a run out at the new Wembley. Great experience for the players. People seem to forget that it took years for SAF to make you-know-who into a top side. MON might not be the Messiah, but he might be Villa's John the Baptist. Villa might eventually get a Bob Paisley to MON's Bill Shankly A decade from now we might be looking back on ten years of unprecedented success. Villa are getting there. The squad has some terrific players. Most clubs would give anything to be where the Villa are. As Mark Lawrenson suggested, a decent goalscorer (or the lack of one in Villa's case) was a major difference between the two sides. The commentary team also suggested that Villa effectively or potentially have four left wingers. Milner, Young, Downing and.....Agbonlahor. There's always the FA cup. UTV!

Alba, not often I disagree but now I've calmed down I do. He couldn't not give the pen in reality, but not even a yellow is bias and incompetence. We did well in the face of our own mistakes and a ref who was categorically not going to give us anything other the pen. Personally I think he blew too quick, realised he'd just given a pen and then crapped the rest of it afterwards which meant he ignored the big decisions. We might still have lost, we should've have a right back on the pitch etc etc etc....I still don't fault those on the pitch.

CA remember the difference between proper criticism and the fact it doesn't mean you are still proud of the lads mate, cause I am.

Mike, maybe Dowd would have had no qualms about sending off a Villa player if the roles had been reversed and it had been Owen or Berbatov chopped down after four minutes. I could definitely buy that, and so in that sense perhaps there was bias there. But, despite Dowd having a very poor game generally, even without the Vidic incident, I didn't detect any bias after this moment. I'd agree that our players, as usual, gave their best, and so no blame can be apportioned to them. Obviously Dunne made a very poor error that led directly to the equaliser, but then, as good a season as he might have had, Dunne will make mistakes now and then. Some players had poor games today, but this wasn't through lack of trying but because either they are poor players, or are in poor form, or are victims of the way the team is set up. Again, they are not to blame. Who's fault is is that Emile Heskey is a terrible footballer? Clearly no-one's, as he simply doesn't have talent. But who's fault is it that he's a Villa player? Only O'Neill is to blame for that. We worked hard today, but we were poor. I credit O'Neill with the former, and blame him for the latter.

Albarnista - Heskey is not a terrible player. He is merely the first of a new breed of Forward. One where they aren't there to get the goals but to support the on rushing modern wingers and centre mids.

Hi Alby .. That is one of my biggest beefs with Mon .. Heskey should not have even been in the squad if we were serious about winning the game . He only scores every 7 or 8 games and even then its when were already winning , Manure,Chelsea, and Arsenal wont play strikers(sic) who dont score goals especially in Cup Finals.. I was looking forward to seeing Delfouneso get a chance but Mon hasn't surprised me with his subs yet and i don't he will anytime soon . If we weren't so predictable we might have got some silverware today . Personally i like Martin and i still think he's the best man for the job but he has a streak of stubbornness which affects our results and we will know more at the end of the season whether i am right or wrong .

The occassion seemed to get to MON today. He bottled it. Most of the time we only had 1 upfront and why did he leave Heskey on?? He didn't look like scoring in a brothel. Cuellar wasn't needed as the extra CB to defend because Rooney wasn't there. He can't cross or take people on or even play through balls but we kept giving it to him and it's a dead end every time. Then again, it's not his fault because he's a CB, something that we only need 2 of. MON would play 2 goalies at the same time if they were both good.

If Heskey is a new kind of forward that is there not to score goals, then is is absolutely brilliant at it, really, world class!

Well said, JayVFC, and that's exactly why so many top professionals rate Heskey while so many non-professionals don't. Simply put, the latter frequently don't understand what Heskey is there for, and what his role is.
BobTheBuilder
And which side has Heskey played for that has ever won anything, as opposed to the sides that have won things playing the far less radical goal scoring strikers
ant1ant1
You'll be telling me not all centre backs are there to stop goals being scored next, and in some teams the goalkeeper is actually the playmaker but those of us who havn't played the game could not possibly fathom the complexities of this

And Centre halfs are there not to defend the centre of the pitch but to make forays up the right wing
Doug4ever
And right backs are not to be signed and if they are, then not to be played, wahey you are getting the hang of it

Doug4ever, I agree, it would have been great to see Delfouneso today, but as you say, it was never going to happen, because O'Neill loves Emile Heskey. And this last point is just one of many points that mean I can't agree with you that he's the best man for the job. Where would we have finished this season if at the end of it you'd changed your mind about O'Neill? I can't see us finishing any lower than 7th this season, and given the cup runs this season, wouldn't this represent a slight improvement on last season?
Albarnista
Just Picked Delfouneso in my Fantasy Team, i think we will see a lot more of him over the next 3 months. @ M_F - i was talking about the negative attitude by some in the forums, thought this was a good piece and summed up what i was thinking.
lost_in_ca
If MON had played the Fonz today and we had lost MON would've been crucified for playing a kid in our biggest game in 10 years, Heskey and Carew are experienced pro's they were always going to the nod, but fear not I'm pretty sure if we get to a final next season the names Heskey or Carew won't be featuring in the Villa line-up.
claretandbluearmy
Heskey is an experienced clumsy Oaf who plays like his shoelaces are tied together . Our best ever form under Mon stopped dead the moment we bought him . Martin tried to put him in Defence(cos wherever Heskey plays the goals dry up) to justify buying him but he refused to play there .
