Pathetic second half performance, classy first half. With a decent referee and not an incompetent impersonation we'd have won far more comfortably given Blackburn by rights should've been down to about 9 men at least, (handball, Collins, Downing) and that's ignoring the two blatant penalties Tvvatenburg completely missed whilst no doubt trying to look pretty on camera.

If the FA, the Premiership or the Referee's Association have any 'balls' at all they will restrict this incompetent buffoon from any match more important that a four boy kick about on a school field in future. It's every game he's involved with, he's certainly not bias to any one club, he is just useless.

That said Allardyce is back to form...not content with making Newcastle play like a bunch of thugs, he seems to be helping Blackburn do the same. Disappointed, I always quite liked them, but on that 'performance' Pompey will be a greater loss to the league.

Don't think it was pathetic dude, still had some great chances, just not as slick as the first half and Blackburn always were going to come at us at some point. Should have been two penalties, one for what Clattenburg deemed a dive (it wasn't) and the second Chimbonda handling the ball just before half time - the ref gave them a free kick?!?! Ash should have buried his chance and if not for better positioning Gabby would also be on the score sheet. Could have been out of sight really but then they had 3 good chances also 2 hitting the bar so 1-0, fair enough, now lets hold our nerve at home and get to Wembley!

don't think Chimbonda handled it with any intent, but Benni's kick on Downing was ridiculous and he's really dropped down in my books. I totally understand the way Mikey felt before the game... but we had every damn right to be confident, and certainly, we'll come into the final with the same sort of attitude against either of the mancs :) we'll get written off entirely (should we make the final) no, in all honesty, it's still a very open game! conceded, on paper, we should have the villa park game in our pocket. but their lot will really be throwing it all at us. i really do think with a little more creativity and better defenders your team would be a lot higher than they are now and would have given us more of a game tonight. were either of them penalties? double post! gabby is now suspended for the wet spam game. clattenberg's a tool. very excited about going upto VP next week. I mean no disrespect to blackburn or their fans, but I think clearly we've got one foot in the final!

Wait till they run out to a packed Villa Park next week..... 18,000 is pathetic for a semi-final.

Pathetic when compared to first half....sorry didn't link it well lol We were in total control really for the first 45 but let it slip too much 'waiting' for the counter attack opportunity, should've put our foot on the ball more and tried to slow the pace given Blackburn were going all out by then.

I actually agree Benji, but it stopped Ash from getting the header cleanly so has to be looked at as denying a goalscoring opportunity ergo red card. Other point is intent or not, if you are stupid enough to go with your arms that high in the box you should get what's coming to you. But as JF says, what the hell he gave them a freekick for I have no idea. Clattenburg's decisions to be honest gave Rovers the chance to try and comeback, they'd have been out of sight otherwise. But a win's a win, the onus is on Rovers at VP now - the margin should've been bigger BUT it's a margin nonetheless and I'd have certainly took 1-0 before the match as you knew Rovers would be tighter after our last match.

Brilliantly worked goal and good performance . Dont think Gabby dived and should have had a pen .. Kalinic should have been booked for clotheslining Collins . I thought Guzan looked lost for most of the match but maybe he needs more match practice .. Milner was great but the Villa fans were outstanding right through the game .

Best I've seen Villa play in quite a long time. Blacburn were poor, and especially so in the first half, but in the second half were the better team. Still, focusing on the positive, best I've seen Villa play in a good while. Back O'Neill properly in the transfer market (given where we are after £100m net spent or whatever it is, another £500m should do it), and we might be in a position to make a run at 4th place. Keep up the good work Marty! In MON (and another £500m) we trust!

Game of two halves really. They never looked like threatening (though they dominated the 2nd half), yet they hit the post twice. Every time we attacked, i felt we could score. zGood win.

Excellent 1st half & a prtety good 2nd half...we should of been out of sight , & clattenberg was useless, but just because they hit the post twice does not mean we were pathetic...They have absolutely nothing to look forward to now & in the future & had to go for it, even though they were lucky to be in the game...but we still had lots of chances & were putting some great balls in their box..Attendance was shocking, away fans fantastic..overall a very good team performance that deserved more than a 1-0 scoreline...well done boys lets finish them off wednesday...p.s I know the top 4 is the be & end all, but give me a cup semi final anyday...love it, great match to watch, and more exciting than the league(still would loke 4th mind)...up the villa!!!!

Albarnista, i like your possitives for once! As for the game we deserved the victory and yep the ref was a disgrace. The kick on Downing was a shocker and lucky for Benni that Downing didn't make the most of it! VP next and i hope we play more possitive football like we did the first half and finish them off early doors. UTV.

Played well, but Blackburn are pretty poor (they were my tip to go down this season ... shame, quite like them). We shouldn't forget this was a semi-final and, of course, the home team will go for it. We dealt with most things very well and scored a very good goal (albeit thanks in part to some amazingly bad defending). Mr Dunne should take a bow ... the man is an inspiration. I hold my hands up ..... I thought it was a huge mistake to sign him. How wrong I was! I do disagree with most of the comments here though; I thought the Gaby 'penalty' was definitely a dive. Maybe 'dive' is OTT, but definitely 'fell over' the defender's leg on purpose to get a penalty. A part of the game, I know, but not something I like. Nevertheless, we won away in a SF. I am a happy man. Well done lads! (BTW ... we really do need a striker!).

Gabby was at least looking for it and well deserved his yellow, imo. The handball looked like their defender had headed it, so I don't blame the ref for that one. McCarthy though should have seen red. And BB were absolutely awful in midfield and defence. The only acute disappointment for me is we should have won by a lot more than one goal. If they don't turn it round soon, they're going down. All my bitching out of the way, yes a good result.

"Albarnista, i like your positives for once!" Lol - unless I'm misreading Albie's post, I think he's employing the sort of humour so beloved of our American cousins - irony ... :o)

its a good win, and i agree with ant1ant1 - "if we had a CF we would bury sides". yeah we get the job done, but with a classic front man, we would indeed "bury sides".

So true a1a1. Petrovs pass to Heskey springs to mind. 10yards out unmarked his 1st touch should be setting himself up for a shot on goal instead he turned away then tried to shoot with his back to goal!? Didnt the commentator even ask where Heskey was when a cross was too high for A Young? We should have been out of sight!

Still got a sore throat from 90 mins singing. Looked like a pen on Gabby from our end, although I didn't see the hand ball. Great win, just got to finish em off next week and we're on our way to wem-ber-ley!!

Heskey was utterly appalling last night. In tern his very presence ruined Gabby's game. Stick Gabby next to Carew and he is involved for the whole game, because Carew is involved in all build up play and Carew is 'quality' enough to find Gabby with the ball. Last night Heskey was shocking, totally shocking. If we get offered £4m for him this month take it and go and sign Jovanovic, or Zigic PLEASE!!!!!!!

Pathetic second half? Jesus christ, we must have different views on what constitutes pathetic. Yes we didnt boss the game second half but we created a load of chances and played some amazing stuff at times. We were never gonna have it all our own way in the away leg of a semi final. I think you must be the annoying bloke sat in the upper tier last night moaning all second half, calling MON and idiot and saying every player was *****e.

Give Fonz a go. He might be the one we need. Otherwise get a striker in. One key problem to solve. Get it solved. Well done for everything else

Heskey missed at least 1 sitter and should have done so much better. Midfield were different class and very impressive yet again. Any half decent strikers would have a field day playing for us. Didn't think that we were that bad in the second half though and a clean sheet is always nice.

Took my kids (6 & 8) to their first away game last night, its has been a couple of seasons since I have been away. I thought our support was amazing. The spell of singing and dancing in during the second half was just incredible. Kids already want to to another. As for Villa I thought the first half was the some of the best football this season.

A special shout has to be given to Ashley Young for his performance last night. Technically, and delivery wise, he didn’t have a great game, but he never gave up, he ran, and ran, and ran all night, digging deep, covering Warnock, dropping behind Gabby, switching flanks - he was tireless, all night long (webcam). If he has that kind of attitude and keeps applying himself in that way, his form will return to him, and he will be a better player for it. More importantly, Young combined with Milner and Downing is really starting to look special, they are awesome in midfield together, and with the composure and experience of Petrov behind them must be a nightmare to play against. Also, was DJ Stu using his right peg last night? Get in! I didn’t even realised he had such a cultured right foot. As for Jim Lad (Milner) – he will be the next Captain of our club; he is everything, we, Aston Villa want to see in a player, a total class act.

Watched the game at work last night, all the Villa fans who went should give themselves a pat on the back, we could hear them non-stop. Is gabby banned for sunday? if so MON has surely got to give Fonzie a go.
