Wasn't a great game by any means, but we held it together and we deserved the 3 points today. A much needed win with quite a classy goal from Gabby to boot!

we never really reached fourth gear today but were always a step ahead of Fulham, which I found quite refreshing. liked the look of Clark and I think that goal will have done Gabby the world of good! Delph seemed a little dissapointed to not have got a game, but i reckon he'd look nice in there with either Reo or Sidders against the blues. UTV.

Well done lads!!! Well done MON for starting with 4-5-1!! Few of the so-called "negative" fans on this site, have been calling for MON's head. They have been calling for 4-5-1. The "MON is the Messiah" crowd, must now surely rue his decision to go with 4-4-2 against Wigan (who have now lost three on the spin). Winnable games against SHA and Pompey coming up. The current top four in the EPL will be playing each other soon, so some will surely drop points. Still think another striker would be a big bonus. If the Fonz isn't going to be used, send him out on loan. A lot of positives, nonetheless, today.

Agree 100% with Benji .Would have been good to see a bit more of a change with 10 mins to go. Blood Delph in when we are winning . I thought Shorey was great today he never seems to get much credit , maybe thats why Warnock didnt get a look in.

Workmanlike. But we can build on this.

Looked good in the midfield. The whole controlling possession thing was a breath of fresh air and opened up the wings. Good to see that someone talked to Milner and Ash, as they seemed content to pass it back instead of trying to challenge three defenders and exposing us on the break. Gabby's goal was also nice, our first quality goal of the year (excluding Curtis' header at anfield). Shorey has impressed me the last couple of days and it seems as though the threat of losing his position again has woken him up.

also, looking at our options on the bench for this game - with luke young, bouma, davies and downing having returned; dunne and perhaps another attacker signed up - we'd look very, very strong indeed. which leaves me to believe that we should not be written off to again pose a serious challenge to the big four.

HESKEY DIDN'T EVEN GET A TOKEN 5 MINS !!!!! Has MON finally seen the light (the light that everyone else saw years ago.) I was waiting for it but he stayed put on the bench where he belongs all game! Is he now no. 3 in the pecking order?? Did he forget to bring an apple in today for Sir or maybe MON just forgot that the teacher's pet was there with all the excitement in such an enthralling game (yawn)???

Agree with Benji's first comment. we wasnt exiting to watch but we deserved all 3 points today, cant say i agree with your other comment though Benji, we are far weaker this season unless MoN can sign players to replace Barry AND Laursen, lets face it thats not going to happen but if we can ride lady luck like the liverpoo l game and hold a tight line against the weaker teams then we might have another shot at Uefa next season.

3 wins in a week, 7 goals and 6 points. Game against Wigan fading into the past and hopefully more strength added this week. Going out of Europa league might also do us a favour in the league this year. A happy day especially as we seemed to control the game today without looking spectacular. Actually ground out a result.

to be fair villawillriseagain quite a few of those some are calling negi's were screaming for 4-5-1, not that I have to stick up for anyone you understand but it was a constant thing being posted in the forum along with dropping Heskey who MON seemed to change the team to accomodate.
Pretty awful game today, mainly because of the awful Fulham who I think came to bore us to death, but 3 points is what counts, if that was a loss with a subdued game like that there would have been all sorts flying, so thank goodness we won and what a great goal by Gabby, lets hope that gets his confidence back.

I think that Stan covers the loss of Barry - not sure how many of you will agree, but i reckon he does. he plays so well in that holding role, and with Delph blooming nicely I feel even more optimistic that Stan playing in the holding role will prove to be an advantage. granted, Laursen is a huge, huge loss in both leading and scoring. but i remain optimistic, and i reckon with two decent additions, we certainly have as much of a chance as spurs and £ity at breaking in. i think aiming for a top half/top six position is not something MON's villa should even be condsidering.

Well done to Ciaran Clark, very much contributing to our 1st clean sheet of the season! I'm very pleased with the team performance. Efficient. What a strike, I can't remember Gabby ever scoring from outside the area before today. Anyone else???

Well done Clark, well done Villa, we showed a lot energy today, I thought Sidwell, Reo Coker and Petrov worked their collective socks off. I am being harsh here, but I still think we need a llittle more quality through the spine, but 3 points is 3 points and I'm so so happy! UTV

Let's hope MON has seen enough now to convince him that we shouldn't change shape to accomodate a certain individual - see I can be diplomatic!

The Fear- I meant most of the so-called "negative" fans don't want to see MON sacked. All they want is for him to play 4-5-1. As for Heskey, he's a 4-4-2 player. If MON is going to continue to play 4-5-1, he's out in the cold. MON should offload him in January. Heskey would probably except that, as he needs to be starting games to make Cappello's World Cup squad.

Petrov isn't bad, but he's not fit to lace Barry's boots I'm afraid. He lacks Barry's physical presence, isn't as intelligent or as tactically astute, and his limited passing ability compares most unfavourably with Barry's, who can make any pass in the book. Didn't see the game due to work commitments. My dad's a Fulham fan, embarrassed by the performance they put in against Chelsea a week ago. Apparently, Fulham were much worse today. A win is a win, and that's all well and good, but it will be a good long while before I'll give O'Neill any credit for tactical decisions he makes, because any successes he has in this area are apparently inadvertent. If only I could fully subscribe to Napoleon's reasoning that it is better to have a lucky general than a good one...

In case you didn't notice, Alby, Barry buggered off to the Mancs. Stan Petrov still plays for us though. Here's a novel ideal - maybe you might try giving the Villa player some encouragement?

dont be daft as albarnista always slams MON's decisions whatever they are. Clark was great in his role along an improving Ceullar and nice to see Reo play in his fav position also. Sidders needs shooting pratice but at least he is getting box to box. Happy for Gabby and his beauty of a strike. Shorey was ok but would like to see Warnock in that role as I believe he will be better for us. Off load Heskey and loan Fonz out for a year and grab another striker who will push us on. The best thing being ofcourse is the home win!

Bob, I wasn't aware that Stan visited this site... Barry leaving for Man City doesn't invalidate the assessment, and in fact lends weight to it. I like Petrov, although I don't think he has the necessary qualities to be either a defensive or attackng midfielder in a 4-4-2. We can only hope that O'Neill continues to use 4-5-1, or whoever plays in midfield for us is going to be exposed because we lack a player with real presence. Reo Coker is the closest thing we have at the moment, and maybe he'll prove he can step up, assuming he's given a chance.

As for slamming O'Neill's decisions, too right I do, because, amongst everything else, the decisions O'Neill has made have led directly to a true Villa legend leaving the club, whilst this cult-leader remains in control.

Your talking rot Albarnista! MON was the direct reason for Barry's departure? So the allegded £130k a week has nothing to do with it? Or indeed his yearnings to play CL football. Mr Barry was always going to leave. Of that I am sure! Now your going to say GB said he would stay if we was playing CL football. He also said that's the only reason he would leave. I'm affraid what GB says and what he does are very differnt things indeed.....

O'Neill isn't a 'cult leader', Alby, and he would appear less Messiah-like if we could have reasoned debate on here - about MON, RL and the team - rather than having to constantly defend him from rubbish such as him being the reason for Barry leaving. Utter rot. If it hadn't been for O'Neill, Barry would have been long gone - if anything we can thank the man for retaining GBs services for an extra year.
