There is no excuse, especially not a home. The defence should have been sorted as soon as the window opened. Also, y cant we sign a striker that can actually kill games off? Thats what happens when you lose your 2 best players and don't replace them. Not one for knee jerk reactions but on this performance we won't get anywhere near top 10 so forget top 4!

such a joke, when we played 4-5-3 last season we were mint and in top 4 soon as we go 4-4-2 we cant keep the ball, we realy need some top quality signings in asap or its bottom half of the table,especialy if wigan make us look poor

Well, there is the first reality check, we were out-thought and out-fought. Have we learned nothing from last year? We have no one to break down packed defences, no playmaker and no ball winner, result - inevitable defeat. We have two weeks to get the players we need, come on MON and Randy do something, you have the rescources

Villawillriseagain I can't agree more. I just came on here to say exactly the same. With the players we have we play so much better 4-5-1. Why on earth does MON not see how we played well 4-5-1 and started playing bad as soon as he changed to 4-4-2. Gabbie and young only play well as a counter attack striker/winger and when young is being marked by 2 or 3 players why is he not told to play it simple. He lost us so many chances today as if he just played it simple there were three men on him so less defending against the rest of our players. Also in 4-5-1 Delph would have had a much better game and being free to make an impact. Also today shorey was shocking and messed up every time he got the ball. I usually defend players but he that was bad. I've read this site for ages and that disgraceful performance has made me go and register. Also why have we not signed Hargeland??? one of the best defender in the premiership with one year left on his contract. WE need decent defenders and he could ne had for 8/12m so it makes no sence!!!!! We were out classed and outplayed today. I thought we looked like relegation material and Wigan looked like Champion league hopefulls we were that far apart. Also why have right clicks been disabled on this site so I cant spell check and make sure this makes sence. Shocking thing to do so sorry if my spelling or grammer is poor!!!

Worbo, your team has balance and the players seem to know what they are meant to be doing which is a real bonus when they walk out onto the pitch

Wheater, Hangelaand (or Turner), Van Der Vaart and Tuncay. I really do not care what it costs. It is the only way we will have a shot this year. The last day or two of the window is hectic so first thing Monday - throw money around - whatever it takes!! He literally could not have more time to find replacements for Barry and Laursen, Barry he knew for a year, then was sure before window opened! Laursen he knew before season ended. Its a joke!

We cannot magically sign players to improve us. They are all seeking the mega bucks best deal and we are in competition with Spurs, Everton etc for anyone half decent. But we could have a good season . We have got good players. We would be entertained to see solid progress as young players cement their places. Play your best team MON. Play players who are comfy with a ball at their feet. Stop seeing things in players who you hope will come good and start seeing what everyone else can see. We won the Peace Cup with the youngsters and Fonz starred for the under 19s. Albrighton and the Fonz, possibly also Barry Bannan should be tried as regulars. Heskey, Gabby, Sidwell, Rio, are players who are not comfy on the ball. But MON is Tony Blair. He is a conviction manager and persists playing the same way and preaching the same message even when it carries on and on and on not working. Things are not as bad as some are making out if we played the youngsters it could be a revelation. Just what has Gabby done to deserve a place in the team all 2009. Give the places to the players that deserve them. If they play well keep them in. If they are rubbish drop them. I know you need to give players a chance for a few games, and cannot jump to conclusions straight away. Can take time to settle in. But some of these players have had endless chances and it is time for others to start the season, but Mr Blair will persevere. He will not see. He sees and says how good the youngsters are, but he plays the same players for ever and ever. I hope Gabby comes good of course, but put Carew up front with the Fonz. Albrighton and Delph to play regularly too. A transitional season in which our youngsters take us to win the League Cup, FA Cup, and Europa league and 11th in the Premier would do me. One piece of silverware would of course be brilliant. But lessons need to be learnt fast. Trouble is we only have one good Lerner at AVFC.

Thanks jammy for the post... I think i and probably most villa fans appreciate someone trying to lift our spirits... But honestly today was awful. Its not that we lost but the way we lost. And the pessimist side of the villa fans are probably not too surprised... No defense - a poor boy who looked good in league 1 picked over other solid but unspectacular midfielders, a strike force that couldn't score with a prostitute at the moment. And we can't change anything because we only have a bunch of talented youngesters as our only other option...

You'll be fine; and I hope at least one of the teams in the chasing pack actually challenge the Champions League autocracy this year...be it MC, Everton, you or us. Apparently, in France they call those b******s, the Fantastic Four. Arrgh!

What can I say - bye bye Beye, and take the other 3 defenders with you. Find room on your jolly good beye bus for petrov and Young, but make sure Ash does not loose control of his dummy and throw himslef on the ground, then blame some one else. You may have to help the hesky gabby disaster find the bus door as they can't seam to find openings between 2 uprights. Then take the bus and go and play for a team that wants useless trash that don't try. Saying that, we'll stuff Liverpool cos we will actually try against them.

Can someone please tell me - just what is our strategy? How do we play? Just a continuation from last year. Totally outrun in the midfield, Cuellar and the full backs totally *****e. Crap, crap and more crap.

Delph 1 game Beye 0 games with the rest of the team pre-season. What do you expect. The window may last until the 31st but transfers should be identified early and then actioned immediatly. Before last season ended we knew we needed a right back and and centre back period. Never mind improving on players already in position. I work in finance and we start planning for the next financial year 6 months before it starts. Martin then sells another CB without seemingly to have a plan who would replace him. Can anyone tell me that we actually have a plan/strategy to take Villa forward from last season. The Premiership is a tough league where standing still will see you fall back very quickly. Newcastle and Boro are examples. Portsmouth look like they are heading that way. I am not panicking yet and did not boo at the end but we seriously need a statement of intent from the club of what direction we are taking. My 2 young children were really suprised today at the amount of people leaving early and could not understand how poor we played after seeing us look good for the last three seasons. All I could say was "Welcome to the real world kids this is what it has been like for me for last 40 years with the odd ecstatic moment dotted along the way. Get used to it." Also can we all get of Gabby's back can anyone identify one decent forward pass to feet or space today.

Good points Dead Souls. On the matter of Gabby, ok he might not be getting decent service. However, as has been suggested before he's probably more of a winger than a striker. Also, if he is to remain a striker, then he'll almost certainly get service better from 4-5-1/4-3-3 not 4-4-2. You're absolutely right about the seemingly slow and the badly thought out approach the club currently has to transfers.

IMO he is a striker because he cannot cross, but he is a striker that plays well in a counter attacking side, hence he plays well 4-5-1 and poor 4-4-2, Most of our squad play well 4-5-1 apart from Heskey, yet we play 4-4-2????????????????
