59% possession to them?! Blimey! Job done, good all round performance in what was always going to be a scrappy game. Gets them that bit more match fit for the kick off against Man City as well. Nice to see Barry score and thought Young and Gabby goals were class
The Fear
If Shorey can play for Villa so can i!
Sali Salifooooou
Shorey didnt look to good first half but was a lot better second. His first game for a while though. Thought Petrov played quite well and all in all a good honest performance from a terrific bunch of lads
DO'L
Reo and his mate Coker i really dont know, they just can't pass, surely he worked on it before in pre season, he is an awful player at the moment......... out of position or in position he can't pass! ANyway an ok performance can only beat what is put in front of yer (cliche) I mean look at man city, lost at home! well taken goals by villa, dodgy lookin defence, Friedel looks class, Barry showed commitment and class, Villa need him!
krisvilla
I'm sorry, but I don't know where those stats came from!!! The percentage of play was the other way round, and no way did they have 12 "shots". They may have had 6 with about two on target. Anyway, that was not a game where you could make realistic assessments of who's playing well and who's not - as I saw it, once Villa went 2-up in 6 minutes, our lot didn't really seem to take the game very seriously after.
the_lergy
Thought Routledge looked decent when he came on. Got fouled a bit but played alright. Hopefully will give him a bit of confidence which is what I think he needs
Ian Taylor
result is a little one sided compared to how we played, very boring and full of mistakes, very lucky to be fair
Astonian Villan
Good result, gives M'ON the chance to play Routledge, Maloney, Harewood, Knight in the return leg and give a few of the 1st teamers a rest before the Liverpool game a few days after. Young and Barry were fantastic, and great to see Davies play a full competitve 90mins.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
Man City lost at home today, they have big problems up front at the moment, hopefully Villa can make it a bad week for Hughes on Sunday.
JOHN.CAREWS.CREW
we cant really compare this to any other game. the way we approached this is completely different to the way we will approach sundays game. same applies for city too, hence why we cant think about their result tonite in preparation for sunday. result is what matters the most. 59% possesion - so what? theres only 1 stat that matters: 4-1 job done!
cat_shafton
Great result! I agree with Ian Taylor that Routledge showed a lot of promise - I actually would have liked to have seen him brought on earlier. The reports of his excellent pre-season performances seem to have been spot on. Do we need Milner, after all?
Athens Villa
We won convincingly, the second leg will be a stroll, you dont get that too often in competitive european club football. Job well done.
glensider
Lets not start having a dig at Nicky Shorey Sali Salifooooou. Why go there? The guys a quality left full back. It was his first game for us, added to the fact he hasn't had too much pre-season. Why do we Villans have to knock, knock, knock?
glensider
Well said glensider. Athens Villa, I agree I would much rather us buy a left winger, so ashley can play left or right and we'd also have cover for both sides then, routledge played well tonight.
johnmurphy3112
You can't be very focused at the game, after 2:0 in just 6 min. Job well done
Poncho
Agree with glensider, why would we want to knock shorey after one game ffs? Good result, dont know if the stats are right though, plus I would have liked to have seen routledge starting after a very good pre-season.
romanianvillain
Good to see some of the new players actually get a decent run out. Thought Routledge looked lively (why was Reo playing right mid again!?) and Delfouneso showed a couple of nice touches in the 15 minutes he was on. Hopefully they can get a full 90 minutes in the next leg. Jury still out on Salifou, looks a tad clueless at times
