Vital Villa Interviews 2012: beardofolof
1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?
I was born a Villan on February 24th 1994 and have been hooked since a Lee Hendrie double led us to a 2-0 victory over Croatian giants Slaven Belupo in the Intertoto Cup in my first game at Villa Park! I also recall David Ginola falling off the bench on that day so it really was memorable! Claret and Blue blood runs in the family and will continue to do so for endless generations to come!
2) Paul Lambert? Your opinion please?
The fact that he is not named Gary Megson, Mick Mccarthy, Alan Curbishley or Alex Mcleish automatically fills me with optimism! He seems to be very tactically adept, attack minded and a great man motivator, characteristics that can only be beneficial to our fabulous club! I'm sure every other Villan salivates at the prospect of going into a game knowing we WON'T park the bus and we will ATTEMPT to play some football.
3) Best and worst moments of last season?
Best - Weimann's last minute belter at home to Fulham, New Years Eve win at Chelsea, the dismissal of Mr. McLeish
Worst - Stiliyan Petrov's tragic illness overshadows everything and I'm sure we all wish him the best of recoveries!
4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner and the board, can a decent season next season make up for last season?
I think Randy Lerner is a great owner to have, especially when we look around .. (porn tycoons? chicken farmers?) and a lot of discontent hurled his way is unwarranted. Although the appointment of McLeish was foolish, I can hardly blame Randy for wanting to cut costs after Martin O' Neill wasted more money than Kenny Dalgli----, well maybe not but wasted A LOT of money on average players with ridiculous wages such as Sidwell and Sunday Monday Habib Beye but McLeish really was the worst man he could have appointed, my Football Manager resume is fantastic and I'd have worked for a fraction of Big Eck's wages! I think the adventurous nature of the recent managerial hunt shows how the board have turned a corner with their ways and a decent campaign next season would make me forgive the board for that abysmal season we have just endured.
5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?
I think that although the squad is not as dire as some believe, big changes are needed.
I would like to see :
- A new second keeper (depending on how good Siegrist is)
- A right back (Naughton? Debuchy? (wishful thinking) Clyne?) somebody attack minded
- One or two solid centre backs who are comfortable on the ball(Ron Vlaar? Chris Samba? Matteo Mussachio? Jagielka?)
- A left back (Poulsen? Baines? Olsson?)
- A midfield general (Diame? Strootman? Diaby?)
- A goalscorer who can play (Lukaku loan? Mandzukic? Sturridge? Nilmar? Rossi?)
6) Which player/s should Villa get rid of this summer?
Alan Hutton, a new right back, Lichaj and Herd will soften the marginal blow
James Collins and Richard Dunne, Clark and Baker are better footballers and new centre halves would make the gruesome twosome a distant memory
I would keep Warnock as he is combative and some competition at left back may bring him back to his form that saw him in the England picture
Agbonlahor is a decent offer was put in, he is inconsistent and lacks the footballing brain to succeed any further, although on his day he can be a menace
7) Favourite current player?
A toss up between Ireland, Given and Bent because they can all be match winners on their day
8) Favourite all time player/s?
Impossible to answer so a starting XI will have to do (based on the last decade or so) : Given, Walker, The Beard, The Great Dane, Bouma shake the rooma, Nobby Solano, Der Hammer, Sali-Salifou (C), Ashley Young,! The Dion, Juan Pablo Angel (as long as he wasn't on penalty duty!!)
Dishonourable mentions - Gabor Kiraly, Bosko Balaban, Mark Kinsella and Useless De La Cruz
9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season assuming a decent transfer window with £25m or so spent?
FA Cup: 3rd round loss to Man Utd
10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?
Why do they always concede in the last few minutes regardless of manager, squad or opposition? Unfortunately I don't have an answer but I'd love to know if there has ever been a time when Villa fans did not look to the last few minutes of any game with utter dread?
11) Just to change the theme slightly, a snap shot of you outside of football, answer or ignore at your leisure:
