Vital Villa Interviews 2012: Zigthevilla

Vital Villa Interviews 2012: Zigthevilla
Zigthevilla is next for the Vital Villa interview.

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

In the blood. My Dad and his Dad were Villa fans from Tamworth, so I had no choice. I came of age in the 95/96 season when I was 9, and still have my Aston Villa third kit (With no.15 Fernando Nelson on the back, haha) with my team signatures on it. Mark Draper and Alan Wright were my two favorites, although they weren't exactly the stars of the team I liked how hard they worked for the team, and they were the two signatures I waited longest for!

2) Paul Lambert? Your opinion please?

Great choice, and one I'm extremely happy with. He has determination, and that will definitely be needed to whip Villa into shape, especially the defense. After a season of shameful cowardice and tactical incompetence from McLeish that made me question everything about Villa, Lambert is what we need. I just hope Lambert can attract some good players who like to play the ball, a real silky play-maker, and get Gary Gardner to show some of his promise in the middle.

3) Best and worst moments of last season?

Best moment, the unexpected excitement of a victory at Chelsea, and Lichaj looking like he's ready to step up at full back.

Worst- the hours after the Bolton game. I could have cried.

4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner and the board, can a decent season next season make up for last season?

Yes- but with the caveat that this season is so important to how he will be viewed by many of the Villa faithful. I think he is a good person, and an owner who cares about our club. But I think he would do well to have a footballing link between himself and the manager, as an advisor who better understands the game. I recommend Ian Taylor! Last season was really bad, but I genuinely think he was poorly informed about the level of tactical dross that McLeish was about to serve up, and didn't want to make a knee jerk reaction. But I hope he has learned some lessons about making the fans feel as if they matter in future. Anyway, water under the bridge, bring on next season!

5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?

I'm kind of a nerd with stuff like this so bear with me! I really like Aubayemang from AS Saint Etienne (a quick young striker), but I truly think that the most important positions are centre half and a playmaking midfielder and a holding midfielder. Either Veloso from Genoa (1958 Villain knows his stuff) as a holding mid, or N'Guemo from Bordeaux maybe. Someone with some bite. Though I believe that with a good manager I think Makoun could step up. For a play-maker I'd hit Ajax up as they seem to grow them in plant pots there, there are so many! Maybe Ismail Aissati or Nicholas Lodeiro, one of the guys forced out when Christian Eriksen became world class. Finally, for a centre half, I think Jonas Olsson from WBA would be a good choice, but then I think Ciaran Clark is ready to step up as a starter.

6) Which player/s should Villa get rid of this summer?

I hate to rag on players, as they are still Villa players, but my God, some of them have embarrassed themselves and the shirt over the past few seasons. First and foremost, Alan Hutton. The guy cannot pass, run, defend, cross, or understand tactics. How he cost £10 million a few years back baffles me. Collins is next, as he seems to cause strife, and although he gets some good 'Match of the Day blocks' in, I realised sometime last season that this is because he is out of position a lot and isn't very smart. Plus, him and Dunne are identical players, both blood and thunder block machines, and we need a cultured ball playing CB alongside Dunne. Clark would fit the bill. Also as a negative against Collins- HOOF. It really saddens me to say this, but probably Agbonlahor too. He looks like a broken man and needs to move, and needs someone to give him a hug. I'd salute him on his way out for his years of service, but I think he needs to go. Also, Delfounso, Marshall, maybe Bannan if he doesn't cut out the Hollywood passes. Give Warnock another chance under Lambert, even though he stresses me out sometimes.

7) Favourite current player?

Ciaran Clark (on my shirt, haha)

8) Favourite all time player/s?

Martin Laursen, hands down. Watching him defend made me happy in ways that are weird and confusing.

9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season assuming a decent transfer window with £25m or so spent?

Premier 8th
FA Cup: 3rd round Man Utd defeat, naturally
Carling: winners

10) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?

Q: Are our young players as good as they are often hyped to be?

A: I sure hope so, lets check back at the end of the season! I am pinning my hopes on Gary Gardner

They should get you in as scout, good knowledge there! And yes, the Bolton game, that feeling of doom after it was just horrible.
