Vital Villa Interviews 2012: JimmyG
JimmyG is next for the Vital Villa interview.1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?
15 March 1969. I first lived across the road from St Andrew's (Arthur Street) and so my first games were Blues reserve matches and the occasional first team match. Having left the slums of Arthur Street but still living in Blues territory my cousin, who lived in Bromford, persuaded me to try Villa Park. Blackburn. 1 - 1. The weather was dull, the football poor, the game unmemorable. But the impact was immediate and life changing. The stadium and the colours and the sense of tradition simply overwhelmed me. I'd also caught the fever that Tommy Docherty initiated.2) Paul Lambert? Your opinion please?
As he sets out teams to play attractive, passing football and is still relatively young, a great appointment.3) Best and worst moments of last season?
Best - the win at Chelsea. Worst - losing at Old Trafford. It doesn't matter how many times it has happened it still riles how, with the very odd exception, we seem to throw the towel in each time we play them. 4) Your opinion of Randy Lerner and the board, can a decent season next season make up for last season?
Best interests of the club at heart and early investment in the training ground, Holte pub, and branding all demonstrate a healthy respect for the heritage of the club. Yes to next season helping to redress some of the awful stuff from the season just finished, particularly if the fans get behind PL and recreate the atmosphere I remember so well from the 70s.5) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer?
Holt, to partner Bent, and maybe Adam Johnson who needs a disciplinarian of a manager and PL may be just that. A central defender comfortable on the ball would be good too.6) Which player/s should Villa get rid of this summer?
Collins, Dunne, Hutton..............and maybe Warnock. Defensively we were shocking 7) Favourite current player?
Clark - has already passed the test for me and has a very bright future.8) Favourite all time player/s?
Brian Little, Bruce Rioch, Andy Lochhead - the unforgettable third division days and the sense of a joint crusade between players and fans to get Villa back in the top division. Andy Gray...Sammy Morgan...Dwight Yorke (felt so depressed when he went to Man Ure).9) What do you expect us to do/finish this season assuming a decent transfer window with £25m or so spent?
FA Cup: Semi
Carling: last 1610) You can ask yourself any question you want to about Villa and what is your answer?
Was the Holte End, when terracing, simply the loudest, most inspiring and atmospheric stand in the country? Oh yes. I recall vividly my first trip to Liverpool. Apart from the thuggishness of the locals (fans and police) the most striking memory was of how small and quiet the Kop was - big anticlimax.11) Just to change the theme slightly, a snap shot of you outside of football, answer or ignore at your leisure:

youth is wasted on the young (Oscar Wilde). My dad (RIP) was concerned about how much time I was investing in Villa compared with school and so he had a variation for me: your youth is wasted on the Villa. He may have been a little bit right..
