Vital Villa Summer Interview: deano.avfc
deano.avfc steps up for the Vital Villa members interviews.
Q: When did you become a Villa fan and why?
Before I can remember - growing up in NI just knew I wasn't going to follow the trend of becoming a Man Utd or Liverpool fan. Can't actually remember 'choosing' Villa - just think it was always in my blood!!
Q: The season just gone, good bad or ugly? What did you think of it?
As of May I thought mixed but now I can say, after reflection, GOOD - if I was told at the start of the season that we would finish ahead of Liverpool, go to Wembley twice and one of our lads would win the Young Player of the Year award again would I have taken it. YES! A sixth place finish again but considering Man City's emergence - you could have been forgiven to think that 7th would be best for us.
Q: Best and worst moment of last season?
Chelsea games - home and away - best and worst!!!! On a personal note, being at my first derby game was also a personal high note!
Q: James Milner... is he off do you think? If so, what price (realistically) should Villa hold out for? If off to Man City, which - if any - of their players would you want in exchange?
We seem to need to sell one of our 'big' names - Young, Agbonlahor or Milner. I would rather it was Young to be honest (we can be too reliant on him as an attacking outlet, but that's a story for another time!!). I think Milner is far and away our best player and has the potential to be WORLD CLASS! However, I think he will go - £20m plus Ireland, or £12m plus Ireland and Richards would be a good deal!
Q: What signings (type of player or specific name/s if you wish) would you like to see Villa buy this summer?
A striker who can get us 20+ goals - but they are hard to find and everyone wants one. Some names banded about are unrealistic - keeping a logical head on my shoulders I would say Pavlyuchenko - affordable and would be interested in a move. Ireland and Richards (an ideal O'Neill signing - young, English and a centre-back who can play right-back) would also help the first XI. If I also think of O'Neill types, he likes his BLUFs (big lumps up front) who can hold the line. In my opinion last season there was none better than Kevin Doyle. If MON insists in playing a Heskey type he would be a better bet. I would also like a new winger to give Young and Downing a break, Albrighton has a few years yet before he is ready and I would have loved to see us going for Martin Petrov.
Q: Where do you stand on Martin O'Neill (I don't mean literally, that would be assault) ?
I'm a fan - I understand the arguments against, of course I do, but I am yet to meet a supporter who will suggest a better man for the job. How many rival fans would turn O'Neill down??
I am still very bitter about the three Wembley decisions (Vidic sent-off, pen v Chelsea, and Terry sending off), coupled with the fact that we would have beaten Pompey in the FA Cup final ( I am certain of it) we could be looking at a Cup Double and we would be carrying him up Broad Street on our shoulders!!
Just needs to rotate the team a little more, use the squad, and start being a little more adventurous in the transfer market. Seems easy enough!!
Q: Your opinion of Randy and the board?
Again, how many fans would swap!! Actually heard Nigel Spink give a talk recently at an awards dinner and hearing stories such as how the Champions of Europe team were not appreciated - no pics around the training ground is a joke. The acknowledgment of that team, the redevelopment of Bodymoor Heath, the Holte, the Acorns deal etc. I could go on - all excellent work
Q: Favourite current player and favourite all time player/s
James Milner at the moment - talk about giving 100% - still goes through brick walls in the 90th minute!! Sheer class!! Of all time - Dean Saunders (how much would he be worth now!!) That's why my nickname is Deano!! Idolised him!!
Q: Do you expect progress next season, difficult to answer before the transfer window closes I know?
To be honest, no, more stability. Man City have the money, Spurs have the London link and Champions League football. I expect Liverpool to be even less of a threat so another 6th place finish....and MAYBE a trophy!!
Q: Right, lets lower the tone... which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!
Sylvie Van Der Vaart!! Unbelievable!!! Was reading a World Cup guide that had a daft bit of info on WAGs - usual Abbey Clancy etc. but when I saw her - wow!! Stunning!!
Thump - John Barrowman - prat!!
