Vital Villa Summer Interview: Villan Of The North

Villan Of The North steps up for the Vital Villa members interviews.

Q: When did you become a Villa fan and why?

I first discovered the Villa when I was 9-10 years old. I started to take a bit of interest in footie initially as a result of watching the FA up final on TV, the only time football was watched in our house, and then the '82 WC finals. Being a Silhilian I really only had the choice of Villa or Blues and the noses' lack of success in the FA Cup (that was the be all and end all of club footie for me in those days) put me off. I guess it helped with Villa being champions in '81 but although I was aware of it it didn't seem important to me. I was interested in time for Rotterdam and remember a few details of the match on TV. I didn't really start to get interested, in a bigger way, until I was in my late teens/early 20s and then it really took off for me when I moved to Norway, a kind of anchor to my roots.

Q: The season just gone, good bad or ugly? What did you think of it?

Better than I expected as far as results are concerned, pretty much as expected as far as the football is concerned and that's not a good thing.

Q: Best and worst moment of last season?

Watching us win at home to Chelsea, just because it was my youngest's first game.

Q: James Milner... is he off do you think? If so, what price (realistically) should Villa hold out for? If off to Man City, which - if any - of their players would you want in exchange?

I think he's offski, oh hang on it's Citeh not Chelski, ok he's off. I think we'll get about 25m for him which is a good deal. i love Milner and he may be worth that much to us but he's not worth that much on the open market. Players move on but the club and the fans remain.

Q: What signings (type of player or specific name/s if you wish) would you like to see Villa buy this summer?

Darren Bent, top priority for me. After that I'd like to see Bentley and possibly Huddlestone or A.N. Other ball playing defensive MF - Dare I suggest Gareth Barry?

Q: Where do you stand on Martin O'Neill (I don't mean literally, that would be assault) ?

He's not the man to take us forward and he does not generally get good value for money in the transfer market. He's done a decent job of stabilising the club and is undeniably good at getting a small group of players to play their hearts out for each other but that is simply not good enough for a team with aspirations above 6th place. We need someone who can handle and utilise a squad with 18+ regulars plus kids, someone who understands that the only tactic is not to take of the RB and bring on Emile Heskey after 70 minutes regardless of the opposition, pattern of play or score-line. In short, thanks fro coming in when you did Martin, now please apply for the vacancy at Anfield.

Q: Your opinion of Randy and the board?

not what we were all expecting when he came in I'm sure but has certainly done all that I would expect of a sensible businessman which has definitely been a good thing for the club. I'm not saying he's perfect he's not but he's the best chairman/owner in the prem that I really know anything about. Is Leavy better possibly, or Bates? That's debatable but Randy is certainly up there, the only real criticism I have of him he can't really be blamed for and that's his apparently overly trusting of MON, presumably because of his lack of knowledge (I know GK denies Randy's lack of knowledge but come on, we are comparing him to guys that have grown up watching the game, have been involved in it for years and live in the country)

Q: Favourite current player and favourite all time player/s

Well I'd like to say Luke Young but it seems I'm not allowed to like him as he doesn't get chance to play any more so I'll have to go with Milner. Other than that Clarke and Albrighton look like great prospects. All time? Dwight York or the Magic Man

Q: Do you expect progress next season, difficult to answer before the transfer window closes I know?

Nope!

Q: Right, lets lower the tone... which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Scarlett Johanson and Gordon Brown (please don't get the order of these mixed up Fear)

With thanks to Villan Of The North

Very good responses Ian, a most enjoyable read. I know we differ in our opinions over the manager and where we are as a club, but you always present your point of view in an eloquent and persuasive manner, always providing food for thought. For what its worth, one of my favourite Vital Villans, and also I must add, a very educated and intelligent gentleman when it comes to advising and alerting yours truly to very decent music and musicians.
