Vital Villa Summer Interview: Nimmo

Vital Villa Summer Interview: Nimmo

Nimmo steps up for the Vital Villa members interviews.

Q: When did you become a Villa fan and why?

I am lucky enough to have been born into a family that are Villa through and through, so I was indoctrinated from birth.

Q: The season just gone, good bad or ugly? What did you think of it?

Very good. We were genuine 'nearly men' in that season with 2 trips to Wembley and still in touch with 4th place with 2 games left. Many Villa fans will be frustrated that we are 'only' nearly men, but that shows good progress from the relegation scrappers that we were when Randy took over. The big test is to come though, because the stronger you are the more difficult it is to improve.

Q: Best and worst moment of last season?

Best was the CC semi final second leg against Blackburn. After a good result away we totally messed it up by letting in 2 early goals, but then turned it around brilliantly....before nearly making it interesting again at the end.

Worst was the ride back from the CC cup final after the ref bottled the Vidic decision, I just felt a bit hard done by and sorry for myself.

Q: James Milner... is he off do you think? If so, what price (realistically) should Villa hold out for? If off to Man City, which - if any - of their players would you want in exchange?

I think it's all down to the player. I believe we have the resolve to reject any advances if Milner is prepared to stay and sign his new contract, but if he wants to go there is very little we can do but get the best deal we can. My preference would then be to do a deal with Manchester City where we get 15m plus Ireland as a replacement and Richards to give us a right back to satisfy MON (big and strong) and the fans (a proper full back at RB)

Q: What signings (type of player or specific name/s if you wish) would you like to see Villa buy this summer?

I'd like to see a young pacy creative central midfielder (shame about Delph's injury) and a reliable striker coming in. I think Friedel is good to go for another season, but we need to start thinking about a replacement GK. The change I would like to see in our squad is to use our talented youngsters as cover and to replace the second string senior players with a couple of new top quality players that will challenge the current first team.

Q: Where do you stand on Martin O'Neill (I don't mean literally, that would be assault) ?

I think he's doing a good job. There will always be things that any manager does that I struggle to understand, but under MON we have a very settled and confident squad that work very hard for each other and possess a lot of quality. We have gone from relegation fodder to become firmly established in the chasing pack.

Q: Your opinion of Randy and the board?

I am very happy with Randy. He has done everything that I could have hoped for. The club needed a huge turnaround and Randy has done this in the right way, for me. He had to invest heavily in the squad early on, just to bring us up to a competitive level in this league. Now he seems to be concentrating on the infrastructure and commercial viability, which is very important for the long term. I want to see our club with a solid footing and in a position where it is self sustaining.

Q: Favourite current player and favourite all time player/s

All time - Morley, Cowans and Mortimer
Current - Carew...I know he's often indifferent, but he's the player I most like to see play well, because at his best he is awesome

Q: Do you expect progress next season, difficult to answer before the transfer window closes I know?

I expect every season in the English Premier League to be extremely competitive and very difficult, but I want to wake up on every game day and feel that we have a chance to win the upcoming match. I expect us to go out and try 100% to do just that. That is all I hope for. Man City will spend, Spurs should use their Champions League qualification to strengthen. Everton should get better luck with injuries. Liverpool might bounce back with a new manager and possibly owner. So, we have to go some to retain our top 6 status, but a couple of players to provide some guile and ruthlessness in attack could see us finish even higher.

Q: Right, lets lower the tone... which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

I can't believe you would ask such a crass question! As a happily married man and father of 3 I find this one very difficult to answer...but I suppose at a push I would bash Ana Ivanovic's back doors in and plough straight through Salma Hayek...then if I had any energy left I could kick seven shades out of Chris Moyles

was difficult after the final, think we could have walked out having lost if not for that decision, it might not have made a difference but just annoying we were left with that doubt due to the ref bottling it. We all stayed down on the night and went out, talk about flat. We tried so hard to be up but it was a lost cause!

Morley, Cowans and Mortimer eh Nimmo, we definitely dine at the same table my friend. A trio of stars in a top quality outfit. Always makes me stop and think when discussing that era, what could this great club of ours have achieved had Ron Saunders remained at the helm.
