Vital Villan Mid Season Interview: BBJ

Vital Villan Mid Season Interview: BBJ
The gentleman that is BBJ takes the Vital Villan mid-season interview:

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

It would have been the late 1950s not long after my Dad went to live and work in Birmingham. He used to send me the SPORTS ARGUS every week and I latched onto Villa. At that time, both the Baggies and Wolves were more successful. I remember writing to the ARGUS around the time we got relegated forecasting that with a manager like Joe Mercer, we were bound to come straight back up. I was astonished when it got published but no-one would believe me when I showed them the letter and said that I’d written it as I’d signed it “Irish Villan” or something like that.

2) What do you think of this season, do we have the chance to push on or will we slip up like last season?

I’m a typical Capricornian pessimist. Someone (it might have been Jonah or perhaps Trekker) once said to me – cheer up, things could be worse. So, I cheered up and, right enough, things did get worse. Also, having first hitched my star to what my Dad called “The Hall of Memory” team around a half-century ago, I have come to accept that supporting Villa is a simile for life – lots of false starts but also quite a few moments of pure untrammeled joy. I’m glad that we’re extremely unlikely to get relegated (!!) and think we’ll finish somewhere between 4th and 7th with the latter more likely than the former.

3) Best moment/s of this season so far?

Watching the Chelsea game at a mate’s house with a relation who supports the London Blues and watching his chortling when they took the lead turn to mild grumpiness as Villa turned things round.

4) Worst moment/moments of this season so far?

The Wigan game. I’d come over in great fettle, met up with our son and some of the guys at the Pink Flamingo (or whatever the Addies was called that day) and had headed for the game with a song in my heart and a smile playing around my lips. You all know what then ensued and it was with a disconsolate demeanor that I’d clambered on board the Dublin flight that joyless night.

5) Do you expect any arrivals this January (bearing in mind MON has indicated not) and IF you could bring in a player or two, who (realistically) would you go for?

A friend of our daughter’s has just had a baby and that’s the only arrival I anticipate for the remainder of this month.

6) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer? And do you think Villa will spend enough this summer to progress?

I’m not sure that progress will be measured just by the amount of dosh we splash out. We spent one fifth as much on Richard Dunne as Manchester City spent on Lescott and which of the two would you prefer to have in your six yard box protecting the family jewels? I would like to see Robbie Keane (at last) come to us for the golden years of his career.

7) Who would you most like to face Manchester United or Manchester City at Wembley?

I would have said United for I thought that even if we had lost we’d still qualify for Europe. I’ve been informed that I’m in error, however, so I think as we’ve realistically a better chance of defeating the blue side of Manchester.

8) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier League: 4th to 7th
FA Cup: Sixth round (at least!)
Carling Cup: Winners

9) Your opinion on Martin O'Neill now he is mid way through his 4th season in charge?

He’s a very good manager but (and I’ve said this before) has yet to prove that he’s a great one. If we were to win two cups this year and finish third or fourth, I might put him back on my Christmas card list.

10) Your opinion on Randy Lerner and his board?

When compared to the soap opera which featured HDE for too many years, they look pretty good. Mind you, Doug will always have a place in my heart after THAT handshake to Abramovich.

11) Favourite current player?

James Milner by a country mile.

12) Favourite former player/s?

Paul McGrath, Tony Hateley, Andy Gray, Sid the Kid. I also recall Sticks Ormondroyd who reminded me somewhat of WBA’s Joe Mayo. I took my Dad to the Hawthorns one night in the 70s and the said JM was playing. After one astonishingly spectacular miss, the crowd was stunned into silence and then behind me a guy said – we can rebuild him, we have the technology.

13) Right, lets lower the tone... with which celebrity would you most like to have a meaningful conversation and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Well, my heart belongs to Mrs BBJ but if she threw me out then I might start returning the constant texts I keep getting from Carol Vorderman. As to the other question, it would be a toss-up between Gordon Ramsey and Martin Johnson (although I expect I’d have to bring a few other guys along to help out with the Voldemort of rugby).

With thanks to BBJ
