Vital Villan Mid Season Interview: Pking

Pking takes the Vital Villan mid-season interview:

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

My Da and Uncle are massive Leeds Utd fans and as a result there has always been a strong hatred of Man Utd.In 92 when I started watching football Leeds were having a bad season and Villa were challenging Man Utd for the title and my Da and Uncle were cheering on the Villa. There was also a very strong Irish contingent at Villa at the time,I think a lot of Irish people who started watching football in the early nineties ended up supporting Villa.

2) What do you think of this season, do we have the chance to push on or will we slip up like last season?

Losing Laursen was too big a blow to take last season I think he was like a manager on the pitch,Barry did not help matters,we needed a leader and I think Gareth was already resigned to missing out on fourth and moving on.From about mid December there seemed to be a negative vibe building amongst the fans (booing a great performance/poor result against Wigan). There was a horrible sense of inevitability by the time Stoke equalised in injury time and all our momentum, morale, general feel good factor that had been going since Randy took over was gone.We all needed a couple of weeks in the priory when we had to go out and play Man City.I don't think we choked.

We will push on this season.Dunne and Collins have been inspired signings and Cuellar has been excellent.Downing's arrival and Milner moving to the centre gives us an extra dimension. We are stronger mentally (fans included) and the squad is more united. And we are not as reliant on one or two players.Spurs and Man City
have been the subject of more attention in the media and consequently have taken some of the pressure off us.

3) Best moment/s of this season so far?

Beating Liverpool was such a relief, getting the result against Sunderland after winning against Man Utd was bit of a first. The second leg of the Semi Final against Blackburn will never be forgotten.Honorable mention to the peace cup.

4) Worst moment/moments of this season so far?

The opening day against Wigan was a nightmare and felt like last season was continuing.

5) Do you expect any arrivals this January (bearing in mind MON has indicated not) and IF you could bring in a player or two, who (realistically) would you go for?

I think MoN will do all he can to get a striker in,I wouldn't mind Beattie,he seems like he could do well under MoN.I'd like us to have a gamble on Beckford.

6) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer? And do you think Villa will spend enough this summer to progress?

We need a goalscorer and more creative element in midfield.Dream signing for midfield would be Luis Suarez from Ajax but I don't think we would have a hope of signing him, more realistically
Clint Dempsey (if his career isn't over).I don't think Villa will spend enough to make real progress but I don't think anyone else will apart from Man City.

7) If we made the Carling Cup final, who would you most like to face Manchester United or Manchester City?

I hope we face Man Utd in the final. We have a good record against them in cup finals.Man City are our bogey team (one of many).

8) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

I expect us to finish 5th or 6th in the league,to win the league cup and quarter or finalists in the FA cup.

9) Your opinion on Martin O'Neill now he is mid way through his 4th season in charge?

Very happy.I think he has built a very solid team that players want to come and play for.I think fans of other clubs who have spent more money wish they could be like us.And I think a lot of neutrals like us,we are involved in exciting games and years from now we'll look back on this period very fondly regardless of whether we win anything or not.The last four years have been a great ride.

10) Your opinion on Randy Lerner and his board?

I think our owner and his board have done a better job than any other board in the world over the last few years. The investment in infrastructure and level of respect that has been shown to supporters through various initiatives like the General's forum and the free trips to certain games has been outstanding.I feel they want and value our opinion.Maybe they don't give a toss and are just great at PR.Mr Lerner so far has been the exception that proves the rule when it comes to foreign owners having a negative effect on football. We have been very, very fortunate so far.

11) Favourite current player?

Has to be James Milner,Richard Dunne is a close second.

12) Favourite former player/s ?

Laursen,Dublin,Der Hammer,Angel,Barry

13) Right, lets lower the tone... which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

Does the lioness Villa mascot count as a celebrity? I don't know I base my desire on whether I'd have a realistic chance or not,so I'll have to plump for Kerry Katona.I'm not a violent man but I'd like to stab Jeremy Kyle.

With thanks to Pking
