Vital Villan Mid Season Interview: MiniCooper

MiniCooper takes the Vital Villan mid-sseason interview:

1) When did you become a Villa fan and why?

I was too young to remember! My dad, granddad and great grandfather were all Villa fans and used to go to VP.

2) What do you think of this season, do we have the chance to push on or will we slip up like last season?

Squad-wise we're much better off than last season. On the mental side of things... I remember reading at least a couple of articles at this stage last season saying we're the surprise package to challenge for the title. I think the sudden high expectations got to the players, none of whom had really had to deal with such pressure before. This time around most of the press is about City and Spurs... just like Marty the master tactician planned at the beginning of the season ;-) to sum it up, I don't expect a slip up like last season, and I'm cautiously optimistic about us finishing higher or at least staying 6th.

3) Best moment/s of this season so far?

Going to Wemberley!! Other highlights are obviously the away wins at Liverpoo, Manure and Bloos.

4) Worst moment/moments of this season so far?

Thinking about this question makes me realize there are more positives than negatives this season. Losing to L'poo at home was a tough one to take, but so was our start of season and getting thumped out of Europe.

On another note, I'm growing more and more disappointed at MON's obsession with 4-4-2 and not using his subs. I'd say I've also been slightly disappointed with how little chances our youngsters have had to impress.

5) Do you expect any arrivals this January (bearing in mind MON has indicated not) and IF you could bring in a player or two, who (realistically) would you go for?

I've tried to stop bothering with the whole subject, as the January window is enough to drive a sane man up the wall.

I do think we would need a 'hole player' or a number 10 if you like. People talk about strikers, but IMO with the players we have we should go 4-3-3 with Gabby, Ash, Downing and possibly THE NEW GUY switching positions and causing havoc!

Whenever we play 4-2-2 we look knackered come 60 minutes - we've been done far too many times at closing stages of games. We'd really need to control games better and I think we'd defo benefit from having another attack minded midfielder in the squad - yes, someone like VDV.

Just my thought on what kind of player I think we need, unfortunately I don't see us signing class players, or any players for that matter, within this window.

6) Which player/s should Villa sign this summer? And do you think Villa will spend enough this summer to progress?

I think we'll probably get rid of some dead wood and replace them with some more dead wood ;-)

Seriously, I think a creative midfielder / supporting striker and another striker is most likely what we need. Of course everything depends on who's leaving.

We also need to address th GK question sooner or later... is Guzan good enough to replace Friedel? I'm not sure to be honest but think we need to see more of him to find out.

7) Who would you most like to face at Wembley Manchester United or Manchester City?

Don't care really. If we turn up we can beat anyone.

8) What do you expect us to do/finish this season?

Premier League: 5th
FA Cup: semis
Carling Cup: winners!

9) Your opinion on Martin O'Neill now he is mid way through his 4th season in charge?

Ah. My favourite dilemma. I think he's doing a fine job and has consistently improved the team. Last summer, although he left it late, was his best transfer window so far. He's made some very exciting signings in Dunne, Collins, Downing, Warnock and Delph. Not to mention our star man Milner.

At the same time the man keeps baffling me with his stubborn tactics, his preference of playing people out of position and refusal to use substitutes even when our midfielders' legs have gone.

Still, I think he's the right man for the job - for now.

10) Your opinion on Randy Lerner and his board?

I think we are extremely lucky to have an owner like Randy. Recent takeovers in the PL have shown that throwing 's at a club is no short cut nor guarantee to success. Randy runs the football club like a proper business, and I'm convinced his in it for the long haul. Hoping we'll finally have some real stability. Success will follow but we might have to be a little patient, which is not easy is it.

What's really important is the owner's recognition of doing good things such as having Acorns as a shirt 'sponsor'. Things like that make me even more proud to be a Villa supporter.

11) Favourite current player?

The obvious choice: Gotta be James Milner, a super lad and a future England star. Long may he wear the claret and blue of Villa!

12) Favourite former player/s?

Even more obvious here: God, Yorke, Dublin, Mellberg, Laursen. I've always had a soft spot for JP Angel (must be the initials, eh Fear?) ;-)

13) Right, lets lower the tone... which celebrity would you most like to bang and which (male I would think) celeb would you most like to thump!?!

To save time I'm going for a two in one: I'd like to bang AND thump Paris Hilton. Just kidding.

With thanks to MiniCooper
