Best Villa Keeper?

Vital Villa asked who was the best Villa goalkeeper?

I'm amazed at the result with 38% saying Thomas Sorensen. Not that I don't think he is a good keeper, because I do. But better than Nigel Spink who just got 14%? Better than Jimmy Rimmer with 22%?

I'm also surprised that Mark Bosnich didn't rate higher than 22%, he might have been a knob and he didn't leave in the best circumstances, but apart from his kicking which was suspect, he was an outstanding keeper!

That left Jim Cumbes on 3% and Peter Schmeichel only getting 1% of the vote?! Maybe that is to do with the length of time he was at Villa and stage of his career when he came?

The noses are obviously bored waiting for the care in the community nurses to come round with their medication. Yet another poll sabotaged by the idiotic sty dwellers, me thinks. It has to be old square jaw Spink for me.

I think it could be an age thing, depending on the age of the pollers many of whom may not even remember the likes of Spink (who got my vote). Any nominations for worst keeper? Mine would go to John Phillips, what a clown!!

Bosnich was the best. Without doubt. His handling was second to none. I remember seeing him against Sunderland at Roker park 93/94 season in the league cup. We won 4-1 but they absolutely battered us and Bozzie made some unbelievable saves. He also saved ten penalties that season. He was a terrible kicker but he had everything else. World class.

Yeah Spink was class as was Jimmy Rimmer although Rimmer always scared me as a youngster. Those black patches under his eyes I think.

I'm with Jonah, think it is an age think. It was a shame the blues fans from one site decided to come over and vote on our last polls, because it shows their obsession and to me it seemed a bit embarrassing for them. I'd hate that to develop as it seems so playground to me.

eventhough i wasn't even born when rimmer played for villa, he was my choice, after seeing recordings of him during our championship winning side, and his 6 seasons with the villa it convinced me. Spink still a close 2nd for me tho. Whereas bosnich just had personality, good or bad you decide, but they were all better than tommy.

If the noses have infiltrated the poll it was a pity Enncleman was not an option.......he would have got 100%!!!!!!!!

tommy's done well this season and is convincing me he is a quality keeper, i went for bossie, and i'm 31 so i remember rimmer, and grew up with spinksy. i think it'd be the same if you ran a 'who's the best bond', moore would get alot of votes cause alot of us grew up with him. i would have liked to have seen les sealey in there though, he had a very good season with us and was one of the most animated and enthusiastic keepers ever. god bless him.

Definately sabotages. I grew up in the Spink/Bosnich era and if I had to chose one I'd go for Bozzie every time. Spink was a great keeper but he was often in 2 minds about whether to come for balls. Bosnich was a brilliant all rounder apart from his kicking as JF mentioned.

What about KIRALY?? Seriously has to be Rimmer. Used to love it when he used to mark out his extended area in the six yard box, it ruined the pitches everywhere. Bozzy was good but fell into the wrong crowd, we weren't willing to pay him more than tuppence a week

Unfortunately I can remember Rimmer, and although the others have been fine keepers, Rimmer has to be the one. 2 European cup winners medals dont lie! (Not bad for 9 mins of action!!)

Rimmer for me Ron Saunders always prefered a keeper who came for crosses and for that reason Ron said he thought Jimmy was better than Shilton. Ron didnt get it right all the time i remember him saying to John Burridge who stayed on his line " You could be my first mistake" It wasnt long before Rimmer arived

With results like this I just wonder whether the majority of Villa fans know anything about Villa's greats. Without doubt Jimmy Rimmer should have scored 99%. No keeper since, excluding Schmeichal (in his prime) could have touched him for all-round ability and attitude.

Jonah, that was John Burridge - Phillips played alongside Chris Nichols in defence. Budgie was a good value goal keeper who was under rated. Sure he made mistakes but I would bt he made a lot less than Sorrensen.

It was difficult to choose between Rimmer and Spinksy. And both were so closely associated with the greatest times in the club's history. As for Sorenson maybe he has large family that voted for him.

Villacross, Rimmer had a nick name - the cat - because of his superb reflexs - I honestly believe that Rimmer and Shilton were the worlds best goal keepers. Unfortunately they played at the same time. One of the last goal keepers to play without gloves!

Peoples ages seem to dictate their votes, you cant really vote for a keeper you have never seen play for the VILLA.

I do not think the poll has been sabotaged but it is a reflection of the era that the voting fans have grown up with. I think that Sorenson has done extremely well to recover from his howlers against the dildo salesmen a couple of years ago. However Rimmer was good, as was Spinksy but they both had 'peg' tendencies and were afraid to come off their line. Bosnich was world class, the game at Sunderland mentioned earlier was a prime example. I also remember him saving two penalties in one game at Spuds in that same season. I am also surprised that David James was not on the list. He was tremendous. Great agility, commanded his box and a great distributor of the ball. His weakness though was a lack of concentration which led to the odd mistake. He did though make saves that no other keeper would get near and I still think he is the best English keeper available. I also liked Jimmy Cumbes but I remember our first game back in the top flight back in 1972. It was home to Dirty Leeds and he let a back pass through his legs and we lost by that goal. So Bosnich gets my vote. Worst had to be Les Sealy.

Doesn't the lack of David James name on the list make the poll void, as no one would have had an opportunity to vote for him.

Spink got my vote as I don't really remember Rimmer. Obviously Spink was the hero when he came on for the injured Rimmer that fateful night. I did love Bossie too. I'll never forget the League Cup Semi 2nd leg against Tranmere. 3-1 down from the away leg. 4-4 after 90 + ET. Bossie saving penalties all afternoon like his life depended on it. Brilliant. Very surprised TS won. Not that I don't rate him. We clearly missed him this season when he was out. Although you had to feel sorry for the PJ wearing Kiraly when he apologised to us after the ManUre game.

Jimmy Rimmer - the consumate professional. Noted mostly for playing 10 minutes before being substituted in "that" match. What he should be noted for is that he, along with a few others in the Division 1 winning side, played every match in the 1980-81 season (and all that without a pair of gloves in sight.) How many players can lay claim to that in any one season these days?

The best Villa keeper I had the pleasure to see regularly was Colin Withers. His performances were even more creditable when you consider the shaky defences he had to operate behind. I'd put him just ahead of Jimmy Rimmer for that reason alone. Rimmer played most of his time at VP with a reasonably strong back four in front of him, a luxury never afforded our Col. Ex-bluenose too.

And what about John Burridge? Now there's a guy with a fantastic career in football, not just for us but for about 92 of the English clubs and a fair few in Scotland. Budgie was a true professional. I used to like Les Sealy too. Not so much for his goalkeeping ability at times, more for his banter and overall entertainment value.

Bozzie cr@ps all over Sorensen i`m afraid - knees bend, arm stretch-save,save,save - The back-pass rule transported him into a world of pain.

I still dont think that Sorensen is too far down the list though. Maybe not the best keeper we've seen at Villa Park, but far, far, far from the worst.
