Vital Villan Interviews: Rob 'Middle' C

It is my mate and Vital Villa reader Rob Carson's turn on the Vital Villan Interviews..

1 - How long have you been a Villa fan and how did you first get the Claret & Blue faith?

Aged 3! My Dad, my Grandad and my older brother were/are all Villa so it was the natural thing to do! I am now 41 years old.

2 - What was your first game?

Aston Villa v Preston ,August 1973. I think Bruce Rioch scored and we won 2.0. I have a programme collection going back to the 1920s.However I have not had chance to check the stats!

3 - What is your most memorable moment as a Villa fan?

Has to be aged 15 with my older brother,Andy best mate Bez and Big DF in Rotterdam 25th May 1982. As I didnt drink in those days I can recall the Whole trip.Still have my ticket but not my flag!!

4 - And the worst moment?

Last game of the season v Sheff Weds 1987. Relegation 5 years after lifting the European cup.

Also losing at St Andrews, Boxing day 1982 and that vile Monday night at Villa Park when Dublin and Gudjonnsen saw red against Blues.

5 - Who are your favourite current Villa players?
Martin the Lion, wee Ashley Young ,Big John Carew(bigger than me and you) . I also think that Craigey Gardener could do a good job as a central attacking midfielder.

6 - Which former player/s are your ultimate heroes?

Ray Graydon, Team of 81/82, McGrath, Olof.

7 - Which player do you think was the worst to ever put on the team colours?

Nigel Callaghan.

8 - What is the best goal you have seen Villa score and which is your favourite game?

Best goal was Rambo McInally v Millwall 1988(i think) .Back to goal on the halfway line ,in front of where I was sitting in the Trinity Road. Beat 3 and slotted in. I was also at Selhurst park for Dalian Atkinson's wonder goal ,which for me was a very close second.

Best game, from a pure footballing point of view, Villa 4 WBA 3 August 83 first game of the season springs to mind. Also Villa 3 Boro 0 (could have been 10) 1981 and quite a few under Big Ron,such as Wednesday at home won 2.0. It is a regret that I didnt go to the 5.1 demolition of Liverpool in 76.

9 - Best away ground visited?

For atmosphere alone Goodinson Park 84 ,League cup semi final left an impression.

10 - Who would you like to see Villa sign this summer?
The best right back that money can buy

11 - What are your predictions for us this season in the:
a) League
6th
b) Europe Out by October
c) Carling Cup Quarters
d) Fa Cup Round 3 Man Utd away!

12 - What is your opinion of Martin O'Neill?
Eccentric genius !

13 - What is your opinion of Randy Lerner and the new board?

Rich silver spooned Saviour !

14 - Where do you sit at Villa and are you a season ticket holder?

Trinity Road Lower , season ticket for 27 years.

15 - And finally if you could invite 4 people connected to Villa, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be? And you can add one bit of top totty as well to make the party go with a 'bang' ;o)

Ron Saunders , Tony Barton, Big Ron and Randy Learner. My good lady, Ann Marie could do the washing up !

up the villa ,Rob C.

With thanks to Middle Carson!

Blimey Rob you have a good memory, I struggle to remember the last game I saw, let alone games from the 80's! I believe you had to sell your bike to afford to go to Rotterdam as well??!!??
The Fear
Rob. Points 3 and 4 are what I would put. I may still do if I get round to it. Big DF indeed!

Remember well the 4-3 opening day victory against West Bromwich Albion at Villa Park, Steve McMahon's debut if I remember correctly. Have to agree on Goodison for best away-game atmosphere too. Always an enjoyable fixture, not always the right result, but a genuine atmosphere that helps make the day.
