Vital Villan Interviews: Fletch

Fletch delivers (gerrit?) his Vital Villa interview.

1 - How long have you been a Villa fan and how did you first get the Claret & Blue faith?

4th March 1967 was my first Villa Park game versus Tottenham Hotspur it finished 3-3. My best mates dad use to take us to Villa one week and then the sty the next, when I could go it alone, I had Villa mates, so that was my choice.

2 - What was your first game?

I`m not sure if the above match at Villa park was, I can remember a pre-season at Walsall, we won 0-1 a Willie Anderson penalty.

3 - What is your most memorable moment as a Villa fan?

Beating Manchester United at Wembley in the League Cup, it stopped them performing the English domestic treble.

4 - And the worst moment?

7 October 1967, I was at junior school and we lost at home 2-4 to the scum, I never got over that very early shock.

5 - Who are your favourite current Villa players?

Looking at the current squad, and I know he is about to leave but it`s last years players so Gareth Barry and Olof Mellberg.

6 - Which former player/s are your ultimate heroes?

Charlie Aitken, Paul McGrath and Andy Gray (Scottish)

7 - Which player do you think was the worst to ever put on the team colours?

We have signed some right t**ts over the years, Eric Djemba-Djemba being my least favourite.

8 - What is the best goal you have seen Villa score and which is your favourite game?

I was stunned at Wembley versus Leeds when Savo Milosevic scored that goal, the 2nd leg league Cup semi-final at Villa Park against Tranmere Rovers, that game had the lot.

9 - Best away ground visited?

Got to be Arsenal and the Emirates overall.

10 - Who would you like to see Villa sign this summer?

At the moment Patrick Vieria.

11 - What are your predictions for us this season in the:
a) League
Happy with 6th or above
b) Europe Semi finals of the UEFA
c) Carling Cup Winners
d) Fa Cup Semi finalists

12 - What is your opinion of Martin O'Neill?

He had a lot to change when he came in, I`m very happy with his work so far. The players know who runs the dressing room for a start, but we do need to buy players in numbers. He said a five year plan and we have 3 years to go.

13 - What is your opinion of Randy Lerner and the new board?

We have the best Chairman in the English Premier a supporter and managers dream.

14 - Where do you sit at Villa and are you a season ticket holder?

Lower HolteBlock L3 Row JJ seat 64 and yes I am a season ticket holder.

15 - And finally (stolen without shame from Vital Arsenal!) if you could invite 4 people connected to Villa, living or dead, to a dinner party, who would they be? And you can add one bit of top totty as well to make the party go with a 'bang' ;o)

Charlie Aitken, Randy Lerner, Martin O`Neill and Gareth Barry, that should be fun.

With thanks to..Fletch

I remember that game against Spurs very well. The first and last time I ever left a game before the final whistle! Being very young at the time my parents would only let me go to games if I went with some of the older lads from my school. When we were 3-0 down with only about 10 minutes remaining they said "That's it we're off" and I reluctantly had to follow. We'd just got outside the ground when there was an almighty roar from the Holte. Villa had scored! In those days the "Villa Specials" buses used to park on a road that is now the expressway, we were only half way to the buses when there was a second roar. We knew by the size of the noise that Villa had scored again! Whilst we were sitting on the bus waiting for it to fill up there was a third roar! Oh *****! I'Ve never left a game early since!!

Someone from 'my generation'. Thats the spirit Fletch. Remember the 1-0 pre-season game at Fellows Park. Twas indeed a Willie Anderson penalty. Also remember very well the 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Remember too the 4-2 home mauling at the hands of BCFC. Plus they took the Holte. A sad, sad, day.
