Danvilla's Villa v Man Utd Report

Aston Villa
0 - 0
Manchester United

Villa Park

22/11/2008

Attendance: 42 585

Referee:

Very good all round performance, few heart in mouth moments but we outplayed them over 90 mins, had the majority of the control of the match and if anyone deserved to win, it was us.

An overall team performance of at least 8, we outplayed the current European champions. It's great to see a team, that under previous managers wouldn't have put that effort in, but we gave them no time and space on the ball. We know that playing a quick, attacking, nicey nicey game they will outscore us by 2 or 3. We made it difficult and looked a threat. A bit more quality in the team over the forthcoming years, and we could've seen them off today and Liverpool off at the start of the season.

Player Ratings

Friedel - 7

Not much to do, but the defenders have confident in him

Young - 8

Thought he was brilliant today playing out of position great attitude

NRC - 8

Excellent with the defensive work, Ronaldo was in his pocket all night and he outmuscled him time and time again. Did OK going forward for once, although could improve.

Davies - 7

Cleared up most things, perhaps caught a little high once or twice

Laursen - 7

Would've been an 8, but the Rooney chance was perhaps his fault getting caught too high and could've cost us. Other than that, he was sound, anticipated everything second half to get the ball from Rooney who showed his frustration

Barry - 9

Magnificent! Some sloppy passes, but sometimes its hard to find a man against United, but the amount times he was at the back clearing up like a sweeper saved us on more than one occasion. Showed his great calmness on the ball against world class players.

Petrov - 8

Great match from Stilyan, I've been harsh in the past but only because I knew he could do better and he got stuck in and played the ball well.

Sidwell - 6

Not up to fitness, but showed effort and another good technical player. In a few matches, he'll be up to performing better.

Milner 9

- MOTM for me. Great width, caused problems, unfortunately Carew wasn't on the pitch long enough for Milner to be effective but he did nothing wrong all match and got stuck in.

Ash - 7

Not great, we should've got the ball to him more, maybe a bit tired not to run more with the ball but will let him off because every team will have at least one player used to man mark him.

Gabby - 7

Bit isolated, but did well up top on his own.

John Carew - on for Sidwell

Subbed on 80

At no point did we outplay them !! we matched them, of that there can be no doubt but to say we outplayed them is ridiculous.....

Thought it was an even game, only very rarely did Utd look like they'd swamp us and to be fair we had spells where we could have scored - penalty that was never given aside. Think we did battle today and didn't stand admiring their players which we were guitly of doing both times last season. A marked improvement.

Bearvill, has hit the nail on the head, but lets remember it is still far better than any performance aginst them in the last decade!!!

Not so sure about that roehe. The 1-1 home draw, when an Alpay own goal in stoppage time denied us the victory, was arguably a better all round Villa display, and a game we thoroughly deserved to win. Not so sure that yesterday we could genuinely claim to have been deserving of all three points.

Be very careful there Dan. Much more of speaking highly of Stan the Man and I might just belatedly welcome you into the Stilyan Petrov Appreciation Society. Agree with you regarding Jimmy Milner by the way, he had a superb outing.
