Villa Outclass Magpies 2-0

The buzz is back, plain and simple, there are happy smiling faces at Villa Park and there is a joint sense of relief.

The Lions were able to celebrate the news that Gareth Barry had signed a new four-year deal and welcome the new majority shareholder, Randy Lerner, made a superb, humble and understated entrance. He is a 'big' man for wanting the attention deflected away from him and onto the field of play, the sort of Chairman that we've desperately waited for in fact!

Then we kicked off and the smiles turned to jubilation as Luke Moore slotted home within 3 minutes and Villa never looked back.

Think about it. This is the same team as last season minus two players (Kevin Phillips and De la Cruz) and yet under Martin O'Neill they are a completely different prospect. There are no more long balls, no more hoofing up the field to no one, instead we have clean crisp passing, cheeky flicks, confident players who not only look happy to be playing but look like they want to fight for their place in the team.

Newcastle didn't play badly, we just didn't let them play well. They might have had more possession but they were unable to do anything with it because our boys were just not interested in letting the lead slip. I think that is the first time I've ever seen Villa outclass the Magpies, long may it continue.

I shouted over to Martin O'Neill, 'I don't know what you've done, but it is a bloody miracle'! He has, within a few weeks got Villa organised into a tight and forward moving outfit, what a refreshing change. And to think, we'll be getting additions to this young squad as well. The Lions can start dreaming once again, not that we'll get carried away, but the three games so far this season more than make up for the last 4 dour affairs.

Vital Villa asked what the result would be, 54% said win, 32% said lose, 14% said draw.

Player Ratings

Thomas Sorenson

Hard to rate as he had very little to do, nice rest for him.

Olof Mellberg 10

back to his very best, but what happened to the beard (you'll not win Vital Villa's best beard of the season award for a 3rd season in a row if you aren't careful Olof!)

Liam Ridgewell 9

no so many doubting him now are there?! Just shows, treat the youth right and they will blossom.

Aaron Hughes 8

very few problems against his former team.

Peter Whittingham 8

a player enjoying his time in the sun again, all down to confidence and that is all down to the management and player. You don't play for England U21's if you aren't good, and PW is good.

Gabriel Agbonlahor 8

the new Tony Morley? Ok, lets not get carried but this guy will grow and grow.

Gareth Barry 10

great skipper, ran up and down throughout the game.

Gavin McCann 8

good tough midfield performance.

Steven Davis 8

some great touches, still much to learn but at his age, he could be a real star!

Luke Moore 9

superb goal, great performance.

Juan Pablo Angel 10

ran every blade of grass, how some can't see he is quality personified is beyond me. He'll bang in 20 this season given the supply. Quality take for the goal.

Manager Rating

Martin O'Neill. Class act. Acknowledged the Holte End's 'Martin, give us a wave' and my mate Gary Gleeson then said, and give us a wave too, and sure enough, O'Neill obliged. He'll be a Villa Park legend (that is O'Neill, not Gary you understand).

Opponent Rating

Newcastle. Oh dear, same old Newcastle, loads of money spent and no end product. Missing Shearer and Owen terribly, and which team wouldn't miss those class players?

Players incoming?

Notably on the bench, there were no striker options, lets hope Baros is back for the West Ham game. Should be an interesting few days, Stilian Petrov was withdrawn from the Celtic team yesterday? Hmmm. And Thomas Graveson wouldn't go amiss either!

New manager. New owner. New purpose. New passion. 7 points. Second in the league. Dreamland. Am I being greedy just wanting a couple of quality players this week to boost the squad?

After so many disappointments and let downs over the past few seasons, we now finally have hope and belief. Weve stuck with the team through the bad days, now its time to reap the rewards. UP THE VILLA!

Having already played Arsenal (and Reading), I see we're to play London teams in our next six league matches! Our lot will all end up with a London accent! I can actually see us getting at least 7 points from the next three matches (West Ham (a), Watford (a) Charlton (h)) - now that would send us into Euphorialand, will it not?! Anyway, after that we get Chelsea (a). Well, if we can push the Gunners on one side, then Chelsea isn't going to be much of a challange, is it?

I just got back from a 390 mile round trip to see this match and i can tell you it didn't disappoint ! I cant believe the hunger that has been instilled into the players . They played with a vigour i have never seen before from villa . I must say as well that i was so confident with our defensive display towards the end !! It was magnificent !! I don't think Mellberg lost the ball once !!! last season he was dodgy !! Chhers villa , great day out !!! an incredible atmosphere in the Holte End , I'm Hoarse !!!!

Now today was Villa Park behind a team.No Derby, no old enemy to get the place going.Simply the fans putting all their energy(at last) into supporting the boys, and making sure the points are OURS.This is why I buy my season ticket and as for the good football and they will come..!! Juan was excellent, starting to run the line better and with confidence..hey I am a ******* striker, yes you are son, and GB...he is our Stevie Gerard leading by example on and off the field.Gravesen, Petrov,Malbranque and Nugent to add quality and depth, please.

Heaven! Watched this game on the tv last night and went to bed a very happy man! Can't criticise any one player - I actually thought McCann had his best game probably ever! He was immense in the midfield. But what was most pleasing for me (apart from the scoreline and the passion) is that Villa players passed to players in claret and blue! Haven't seen that for a few years! This doesn't mean that MON has taught them how to pass, but that he has organised them so well that each player knows where he is supposed to be and what he should do. So, even if the pace of the game is too fast to look up before passing, you know exactly where a player will be. Not rocket science, and that's what I like so much about MON's philosophy on footie. People must be wondering today why I'm walking around with a huge grin on my face.

Attendance could be down to bank holiday, people still on hols (main few weeks for many companies holidays) etc. Still a shame though, thought it would be nearer 40 000.

If anyone else wants to do player ratings you can do it in this article comments or on the forum, if enough do them, I'd post them up as an article. Also if anyone else wants to do a match report, go right ahead, can't have enough of others opinions! There is a box above the polls where you can submit an article.

Thought Angel was total class today adamsutton, the goal was quality and just shows if he is given the supply, he'll bang them in.

I think we also ought to mention, and thank, John Robertson and Steve Walford who actually do most of the coaching, MO'N is by his own admission quite a 'hands-off' manager. God knows what Martin does but my word he does something!

swanzboichris, I think you are getting us confused with another (Chelski, Portsmouth, some club in Scotland that no one is interested in) club, our billionair is american :o) It is not his effect (although it has certainly helped morale) as he has not had time to invest in the club in any way, he became the majority shareholder just before the weekend. It's all down to Martin O'Neill (and the optimism of a new owner of course), the man is a miracle worker with player confidence and organisation. In time we hope to see him work his magic in general team and player developement too.

What about this hibs, Scott Brown link. An either foot player usually plays right side of midfield who has an eye for goal. Rival for Gabby methinks. I'd also like to see a left back as Samuel wil never make it and Freddie always crocked. Any other rumours?????? Is there anyone out there.
