Aston Villa 1 - Manchester City 1

Villa Park

19/02/2006

Attendance: 23 847

Lame Lions Limp On

Well, I can keep this one brief.

Pathetic.

First 30 minutes City had 8 shots to our total lack of shots, not one shot on or off target! How Vassell missed his chances will remain a mystery but shows just why Villa did let him leave, he could be awesome if he believed in himself, but he will always be average.

Alan Hansen at half time (I stuck by my guns, as did another 20 000 fans and stayed at home) by saying Villa were 'less than ordinary' and looked like '11 strangers'. The pundits were right, we could have gone in at half time 4 or 5 down.

The second half we rallied a bit but never really looked likely, then Baros scored a great goal, he fought hard to get the ball, passed it to Steven Davis who neatly passed the ball back and Baros finished with aplomb. ONE single moment of quality which could have been enough to seal an undeserved (and would we have cared?!?) victory if it wasn't for the fact the team don't know how to slow the game down, don't know how to waste time and don't know how to keep the ball.

I was going to say, until the 94th minute equaliser, that you don't need a good manager (we haven't got a good manager) when you have a lucky one, but the young Micah Richards rose well to a well flighted corner and forced a replay. On that display we won't progress into the quarter finals, that said, O'Leary has already insulted the home fans by saying the players find it easier away from us at opponents grounds, so lets see if he can actually rally the troops.

Thank goodness Andy Cole (sorry, Andrew Cole) wasn't playing tonight, he'd have got double figures!

Star Player

Vassell, nearly won the game for us.

Player Ratings

Sorenson 5.

One superb save but at sixes and sevens far too often.

Mellberg 6.

The defence was missing in the first half.

Delaney 6.

As above. Off for the second half with a knee injury, lets hope he recovers quickly because Mellberg picked up his 5th yellow and will miss the Pompey game.

Hughes 5.

A couple of decent crosses.

Samuel 5.

No better or worse than the rest.

Barry 7.

Why does he have to do everything by himself?

McCann 4.5.

Poor.

Davis 6.

Would have been less but he helped set up our goal. Looks tired

Milner 4.5.

Totally off colour performance.

Baros 6.

Well taken goal, can't ask for a better finish.

Moore 4.

No supply, no chances, not much of anything.

Angel on for Moore 63. 5

No service etc etc.

Ridgewell on for Delaney 46. 6

Looked solid and got stuck in.

Manager Rating

O'Leary. When we scored the opener, he turned and pointed at someone. I hope that wasn't him having a go at the fan who sometimes heckles, surely our 'good coach' (copyright O'Leary) wouldn't be that petty.......again? 11 strangers was what Hanson said, couldn't agree more. What does O'Leary do in training? And what does he do during the game apart from standing by the dug out gobbing?

Opponent Rating

Pearce. Now he DOES kick every ball and get involved. Inspirational, just needs a goalscorer.

I dont think Angel deserved his 63.5 rating, he wasn't that good ;) Atleast we are in the hat as they say.

DOL pointed the finger at the fan when we went (undeservedly) 1-0 up. SO i point mine back at DOL. Pathetic. Tommy - 6 Some good saves, some drops Hughes - 5 Just not his usual self defensivley Delaney - 5 Didnt do his job Melly - 5 Just waiting for his transfer request Samuel - 5 nearly gave 2 goals away, gave corner away that led to goal which at time i thought was poor. McCann - 3 JOey barton ran the midfield, Mccann was miles too deep, and passing was atrocious. Sell him. Allowed Sibieski to get above him in air, and they had a few efforts from edge of box not closed down. Davis - 7 Tried. Set up goal, did OK. Barry - 6 Average. Baros - 8 Took goal well, won lots of free kicks. Moore - 4 England? Jumping the gun message board guys. Had what baros had. Baros wins free kicks even if he cant do anything else with the ball. Ridge - 7 Tighter than Delaney Angel - 5 Not Much Pathetic display. Not up for it, not tight enough, no link between midfield and attack. Absoloutely atrocious.

What a complete and utter shambles of a performance. The players seemed as interested about the game as the missing thousands. Passionless, clueless, in fact, same old, same old. Even with the lucky and unbelievable one goal lead, we never really looked capable of seeing the game out, let alone adding a killer second. Very much second best today, and how we are still in Mondays draw is an absolute mystery.

Bit harsh on the ratings! They weren't that bad. Should have won it though.

TIME FOR OLEARY TO MOVE ON AND LET SOMEONE WITH A BIT OF PASSION FOR OUR ONCE GREAT CLUB STEP IN TO THE BREACH. MAYBE HE WAS MISSING HIS ROAST BEEF & YORKSHIRE PUDDING TOO MUCH TO EVEN NOTICE WHAT WAS GOING ON.(QUOTE FROM TABLOID) THIS SUMMER IS GOING TO BE MAKE OR BREAK FOR VILLA...I CAN SEE THE LIKES OF BARRY,MELLBERG BAROS AND DAVIS FLEEING THE SINKING SHIP UNLESS SOMETHING DRASTIC CHANGES.

We might of been pathetic but I think the luck is with us this year and thats all a team needs to get to the final.

Worst performance I have seen this season - I was glad City got a draw, as I felt sorry for them - they deserved a win though. We were that bad, we need a tall and strong centre half, Mellberg was pushed around like a pinball in defence and he's our strongest player. We really need to consider players with more muscle/size - man city looked massive next to a short villa side last night!

We didn't get a villa head to one corner last night theirs or ours, so it was inevitable they would score from one, which they did! SCOTTY says they weren't that bad, i don't know what game you where watching mate they were absolutely PISH and thats putting it lightly.
