I can't believe nobody has said Hodge or Platt.

Platt was a great player but jumped ship fairly early in his career to go to Italy and in the media only ever gushes about that time, I don't think I've ever heard him mention his time a Villa after his retirement. Her certainly doesn't seem to have the club in his heart and didn't stay long enough at the club to earn anything more than admiration for being a top player in my opinion.

Did Charlie Aitken nutmeg Pele in that friendly under dodgy floodlights ? My mate at school the next day reckoned he did but I didn't see it. That would make him an even bigger legend

I couldn't tell due to the sluring of his speach.

Maybe veering off-topic, but this came up on FB earlier: Paul McGrath's best Villa XI.

I'm not sure I agree with the Great Man I'm afraid...

Am I the only one who thinks JPA was a waste of oxygen?

In my book, he only scored for about 18 months and once he got his fat contract, he became a lazy sod. I remember him jumping for balls that were 30 feet in the air so that he wouldn't have to turn around and run after them.

I am, of course, talking about the former Villa player and not the forum member, although he's a useless sod too.

You could easily be talking about me. Chasing long balls ain’t my bag baby.

It’s fair to say JPA was not blessed with pace, nor was he very good in the air. But he had magnificent hair.

Interesting he's got Kent Nielsen in there. Just been looking him up. Currently managing Brondby at the top of the Danish Superliga; so far this season P15 W10 D3 L2. Goal difference +18. Another one to add to the list of ex-Villa players we could turn to ...

Petrov (not really for playing reasons but for teh place he earned in our hearts)

To be fair Petrov did well for us started off poorly but I'd argue became one of the best defensive mids in the league for MoN. Decline set in under Houllier he oddly didnt suit his style of play.

I think what happened to him and the support he got plus his allegiance tips him over the edge in legend status for me.

Pre-1998 I leave to the older heads but Mellberg and Laursen are obvious legends Martin Laursen remains likely the best CB I've ever seen. Mellberg was immense. I think Carew and JPA fall into Cult Hero status and not legends. Barry, Milner, Young and Benteke its a shame they all left.

What I would consider Legends in my time and for different reasons of what they gave to the Villa.

Charlie Aitken.
Andy Lochhead.
Brian Little.
Dennis Mortimer.
Sid Cowans.
Paul McGrath.
Ian Taylor.
Nigel Spink.
Gareth Barry.
Dwight Yorke. ( He ended up a prat but he was very good while with us)

I was unsure on Tony because he became my first Villa hero, favourite player and as a young nipper, I was gutted when he left.

But on reflection yes you are correct BBJ.

I think we could also include goalkeeper Nigel Sims although he left just as I started to go. My first Villa goalkeeper I rated was Colin Withers signed in 1964 from those people across town.

Maybe we could also include another real favourite of mine john (Slogger orTulip due to his Dutch roots) Sleeuwenhoek who also kept us up at that time in defense - He was a wonderful player who gave 110% every game however he sadly died just 45 years old.

I think perhaps someone of my age (32) or younger possibly have a greater fondness for the likes of Angel and Carew because of not being around when we were truly the best in Europe.

I always loved Angel even in his various dry spells. The 2 seasons where he scored regularly were probably the only 2 where we had a decent team that created chances. I'd still have preferred to keep him as a backup striker than sign Heskey or Harewood. Carew could have been one of the best strikers of his type in the world if he'd had more drive but he was brilliant on his day and there was just an air of coolness about him.

Great pictures Thomas Holte.
@JW85 - Angel had a charisma, an aura about him and boy could he play on his day. He was a true star, he was class, he is a bit like Falcao. As for Carew, well he was absolutely unplayable on his day and he had presence
