Think one or two would really be quite pleased if he didn't pick him.....he would be completely slaughtered by them if we then lost. However if he does pick him and the team wins.....it'll be necessary to find another stick to beat him with....after match comments supposedly slagging off the villa fans, lucky selection, his bluenose past, questioning his selection for the next game before he's even made it, the shape of his head, not wearing any claret or blue underpants...

Bree for Hutton and if Onomah is not fit then Lansbury in otherwise no changes please Bruce. Although could Jedi play in place of Onomah if not fit and put Hourihane in the role Lansbury and Onomah played i.e further forward

As for Davis, Bruce should have told him he was starting against Bristol City as he was dubbed. Don't play him v Wigan play Hogan. We cannot expect too much from Davis but after yesterday and the international break after the Bristol game there is no reason not to play him.

I remember Cowans and Shaw coming into the side at 17 and never looking back , If you're good enough you're old enough .

Bruce couldn't lace Lord Ron's boots when it comes to building a side or anything else for that matter .
Our current crop are 19 years old, too old for the Youth team and too good for the Under 23 's .
They need to be in and around the first team and not around clowns like Gabby and Richards two wasters who have had the chance to become legends and turned out to be Bell ends only motivated by money and an easy life .

As for Bruce saying he almost played O'hare as well , sorry Brucie me thinks that was bollox as the lad never even made the bench

Just a great feeling to win a game, Green and Davis have to keep places or it sends out the wrong message across the squad.

Knew that consolation at Reading would kick start Hourihane so fair play Bruce for keeping faith with him.

A Platty type run for the first goal indeed, lovely jubbly.

Ahhhhhhhh, fantastic Villa - keep it up please.

The only changes he needs to make for the Bristol game are one of Bree or De Laet for Hutton and if Jedinak is fit I'd have him in over Whelan. Not that Whelan played badly yesterday but Jedinak is better at that defensive midfielder job and the 2 of them together would make our midfield to slow and defensive. A midfield of Jedinak, Onomha and Hourihane is probably the best we could put out.

Hopefully we've seen the last of Hutton in a villa shirt,

Indeed.

He tries hard by and large, and it's probably hard to argue with his commitment. But unfortunately, he just ain't very good

It's no surprise that the continuing involvement of two of the remaining 'survivors' of our relegation squad (Hutton and Gabby) are probably among the most frequent discussions on here.

And their is reasonable evidence to suggest that their involvement is holding us back.

Certainly a trier I'll give him, but I want a full back who doesn't look like a toddler in the deep end of the pool when he's over the half way line.

For me, full back is such an important position in the build up play. Our midfield play too many balls to our centre backs and not enough to our full backs so we go back to square 1. Watching the goals of all the championship games last night, you need full backs who overlap and can deliver 3-4 good balls into the box per game - unfortunately Hutton will have 3-4 per season.

It's also important for me to have good full backs in the build up play as the outlet to keep attacking but in those times when you can't go forward. A good RB should be able to link up with strikers as comfortably as the players immediately around him.

It's no coincidence for me the lack of quality build up play and balls in the box whilst we continue to play Hutton.

Said to my Lad after that Goal it was a David Platt type goal .

Fair play to him he looked a completely different player to the lost lamb we've watched since he signed

Davis will definitely play v Bristol City, no doubt at all.

More interesting to see if he also plays him against Wigan or rests him for the Bristol game.

Personally I'd give him 60 mins on Tuesday followed by the full 90 on Friday... make hay while the sun shines and he's bang in form/confidence.

Davis should no way be rested and will be raring to go in the next game and hopefully get on the scoresheet.
He has come up through the 'hard knocks' route having been overlooked by bigger clubs and ending up at Biggleswade. I am sure that he would have had trials with loads of clubs but got rejected and he now has an opportunity to prove a point.
He will be the name of our season and he and Kodija will be lethal with him holding up the play and Kodija exploiting the space that he creates. How long have we been saying that Kodija is not a target man - well now we have one!

The cross Into space in the box for the first goal, was begging for someone to take the.chance and get a tap in.

I don't know if people noticed but, the ball travelled in that area of uncertainty for defenders and goalkeeper, 5 to 8 yards out.
Its known as the area of uncertainty for keepers, simply because its between the area where keepers should control everything and the area where defenders should be In control. Its the area of uncertainty for defenders, simply because they are invariably facing their own goal and they aren,'t sure if the keepers coming for the ball.

BBJ - 19/8/2017 21:27

In response to the question when was the last time a midfielder scored a hat-trick - Platt perhaps?

I reckon you are right there - Villa 3 Tottenham 2
16th March 1991 League Division One
David Platt hat trick made it 3-0 to Villa before they scored twice

And in case you missed it ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXH_B78r5O8

By the way - impressive memory BBJ!

Thinking about it, that was over 26 years ago. Take it back another 26 years to 1965 and that predates me by way over 2 years and I am trying to think/remember if it ever happened in that period.
Anyway there are not going to be too many attendees at the annual Aston Villa Midfielder hat trick awards - maybe PLATTy will be at a table for two with Hourihane?

Cant remember, but Im guessing it would possibly be Tony Hateley

Tony Hateley, four second half goals against Spurs to give us a draw after being 5-1 down at half time. He was an out and out striker though.

But big Tone was a centre forward, plenty of hat tricks from them.
Right back Stan Lynn once scored a hat trick including two penalties
Bruce Rioch scored doubles, but did he ever get a hat trick.

Tony Hateley actually scored 4 against Spurs when we were 5-1 down and the game ended up 5-5.

I was a mere nipper watching the reserves at Villa Park that day and in those days a guy would be on duty in the old manual scoreboard and every 15 minutes he would put the first teams away score up on the board.

When the score kept on going up for us it was difficult to fully watch the reserve game as our attention had been taken by the recovery score and when he put up 5-5 a massive cheer went up from those of us in the Trinity Road!

I reackon Davis debut was the best since the 19 year old Andy Gray.
It was better than Little and Shaw , because Brian played along side Andy Lochhead who looked after him, and Gary played along side Peter Withe who looked after him.

Davis came into a team with no confidence and led the line on his own, in fact he inspired the team.
Bruce would have seen his ability, when he says he was forced into playing him he would have been concerned about bringing him into a possible bad atmosphere.
He played him though , so full marks to Bruce.

Bruce says your only as good as your strikers, Clough said it Fergie said it , nothing changes, it's why the best one now cost 200 million.
