Been asked by a reporter for thoughts on Amavi

Thought I'd open it to you all to see if I'm being unfair.

He came with massive hype, some saw a player that I certainly didn't when he first came and obviously he quickly picked up a bad injury.

He became, from the injury table, our best player according to many Villa fans (we have a habit of saying the ones not playing are the best until they start playing!) and has been average at best since he has regained his fitness.

He puts in the effort but for me, his defending is on the average side and although he looks good going forward, his final ball isn't good enough to provide the strikers with the sort of supply they are starved of at Villa.

I've certainly got no ill feelings towards him and wish him well in his move away but I do sincerely hope he DOES move, I can't see him bringing much of anything to our squad frankly.

He may well blossom in a different league, good luck to him

Personally and I know I'm in a minority but it's all about opinions but I thought he was our best player until the Dr tweeted about the 25 mill bid. After that he was absolutely awful seems to have a decent attitude but will he go onto bigger and better things I really have no Idea since the tweet I couldn't even say he's been average because I really don't think he has.

He's a better player than Taylor and one of the few we can get money for so I'm guessing he'll have to be sold as we can't give the rest away .
Nots sure we'll get the 25/30m Dr Twitter turned down last season though , me thinks he tells porkies

Thought he looked ok until he got injured, but never a full back because his positional sense was poor. When he came back he looked a bit of a liabilty, caught out on a number of occasion by the ball played inside him.
Thought he would make the grade played further forwards but it didnt really come off, his passing and crossing not as good as I thought it would be.
Take the money and put it in the war chest.

Totally agree Fear, very suspect defensively and dont think hes that great at going forward to be honest, very weak on the ball and easily gets muscled off going forward or defending. If we can get 50% of what we paid for him I would take it.

Great hair though

Agree too Fear, he came as a hot young prospect, started well enough and looked exciting for the few games before his injury.

But since he's come back and we've seen more of him I don't think he's the player we thought we had. Whether it's down to the injury or his lack of interest in being in the Championship, he has looked average, and as everyone has noted, suspect defensively. Move him on and re-invest the money if we can.

What I can't get my head around is the likes of Amavi, Veretout, Sanchez etc. are not good enough for us but good enough for the likes of Marseille, Fiorentina etc. Is it simply the pace of the Championship?

He's never been a fullback.
He started of as a winger, not a successful one either but, was moved back because of team injuries.
He showed some initial promise as a wingback but, as we have all seen, in defensive mode, he is less than average.
Maybe he got away with it in the French league because it is weaker, apart from the top four or five clubs.

Think he will go on to be the French left back and we will all wish we had kept him. Of course he hasn't been great for us, but I think that was the environment rather than the player's attributes - a little like Marc Allbrighton. We have a solid left back in Taylor and I believe De Laet can cover there, would prefer a straight sale rather than this try and buy we seem to have engaged in over the last couple of years.

The problem is the club, not the league. When we signed these players they all had great seasons and were considered good players. but then we threw all of them head first into a sinking ship all at once and that's where it all went wrong for these players' villa careers. Players like Veretout, Gueye, Amavi, Ayew were not bad signings, nor were Gil or Sanchez the summer before but the way the clubs been on a decline for so long is why these players never prospered at villa.

As for Amavi - he actually looked top quality when we signed him, I think people forget how good he was in those first few games. In fact when I heard about his injury I immediately thought that's going to be one of those injuries that will cost us. He's had a terrible injury and is probably still recovering mentally, if not physically slightly too. I don't think his style really fits Bruce's style either, which hasn't helped him.

I'm guessing a lot of these clubs are taking a gamble of him returning to the level when we signed him, and will also play him in his natural position as an attacking fullback and allow him to play to his strengths.

He will be a descent player in a descent team. He's had the misfortune to play in two of the worst villa sides ever. He was fine before he got that injury 2 seasons ago.

I think he's somewhere in the middle.

He's not as good as his spell on the sidelines made him (as you say being injured meant he wasn't tainted by the relegation like some others and made him a better player in some peoples minds), but I do think he's decent enough and in my mind better than Taylor.

I think he'll do well at another club.

Hmmmm.

With Taylor you get a very solid , dependable player.

With Amavi my heart was always in my mouth , always a clanger round the corner with him.

I know which I would prefer.

Thought he was a good player when he came, but with a few problems shown up by the pace of the game which needed ironing out. Pretty awful since he came back; don't think mentally or physically he's recovered from his injury yet.

No point in us keeping him; best for all if he goes, hopefully for a decent price. He may well thrive in a different environment.

Bit of transfer gossip this afternoon, it's being reported that Marseille are now near a deal for Jordan Amavi and Harry Redknapp has been speaking about Tommy Elphick.
