In my humble McParland we sold a great back up in Baker who I thought was better than Samba,Elphic and Chester

Just been reading about some aggro against Spurs buying policy as they haven't done much in this window so far. Question: can they call Onomah back at any time they like?

Interesting that Bruce said in his after match interview it was good for his young players to get some 'Real football'.
In the olden days young players coming through got 'real football ' playing for the stiffs in the reserve league. They would come across tough experienced say Liverpool pro's playing to get their first team place back. They would either sink or swim. Now they play every week in nothing games so it's hard to judge if they have got what it takes.
Thats why Bruce put so many in, and why the top clubs loan out their young players like the geezer we have from Spurs.
Wonder what Bruce learned from last night.

Yes i have heard a number of manager bemoaning the level of the U-23 league and saying how far away it is from competitive league football.

I loved the stiff games. If you couldn't travel with the first team you could watch the reserves at home and you would get the first team score announced every 15 minutes. They would open the Trinity road stand and often fill it.

Mind you not like the 23,000 who saw Pongo Waring get a hat trick in his Villa debut in a reserve game against Birmingham City. The first of ten hat tricks.

Skipper Billy Walker wrote about Pongo.....
"There were no rules for Pongo. Nobody knew what time he would turn up fr training-ten o'clock, eleven o'clock, twelve o'clock, it made no odds. Nobody on the staff could do anything with him although I think I can claim, as the captain in his days, to be the only person able to handle him. He was a funny lad indeed.
We started the weeks training onTuesday mornings and every Tuesday he followed a habit which he could never break. He would go round all the refreshment bars on the ground and finish off the leamonade customers, Storing the remains in the bottles! Then he would start a little bit of his training-but that seldom lasted very long."

Don't wish to single anyone out but I thought Hourihane was anonymously inept last night , which against league 2 Minnows is a concern.
I thought Chester was decent along with steer and ohare .

Look at page 14 Silhill, i singled him out. Had enough. He is anonymous every game he has played. Some may say its too early to write him off but trouble is he isn't even showing any potential to do well. Hopefully i am wrong , but I am so convinced he will not make it with us. He has that air of Westwood about him where you just know you have seen all he can do and that its very limited.

More great history from Erod, thanks. Well before all of our times I should think. All this academy talk is usually just followed by the output being loaned out to smaller clubs to get experience, a damning indictment of the whole structure. What was wrong with the youth team, the reserves and the first team. Anyone remember the massive home crowds in 71/2 for the games against the noses and then Liverpool - just awesome. Would never ever happen these days.

So do I - maybe, just maybe, the thought occurred to him that two or three may be better than those he bought in and indeed way better than some he tries to resurrect.

To be fair, the same guy who managed to get JT in.
Every manager wins some and loses some in transfer dealings.

Obviously, need to use the much referenced Fergie and Djemba Djemba as an example at this point.

Didn't make money - Cat 1 Academy involves in excess of £3million a year last time I checked and I'm sure the people who invented the EPPP aren't out of pocket.

Sanitised it is their only achievement but it looks good on paper when in reality....
