Well we won I suppose but by god that was poor. When Jed Steer is MotM (after committing some howlers) it says it all really.

Plus points - I like the new away kit...thats it . I suppose OHare had a fair game, looks like Grealish without the chip.

Negatives - Hourihane really is poor. He really is worse than westwood. Bjarnasson - have we bought a cod fisherman ? , Hogan , I suppose its harsh to have a go at a striker who scores, but he was miles off side and really couldnt miss, that apart , he offered nothing apart from stopping the game for being off side.

We are through, but this really should be better shouldnt it.

I know I should know better.

A penalty save, a brilliant one handed save are howler moments.

Hourihane, Bjarnason.

I'll move onto Hogan - not offside if you understand the rules of football and showed a growing confidence even if it didn't come off for him.

But rant on - you're only happy when you're wrong clearly.

It was never going to be pretty playing in atrocious conditions.

Kids and players returning from injury get a run out so at least we got something from the game apart from the result.

Saturday will be totally different both in terms of team and opposition.

How on earth did Steer commit howlers? The ball spilled once for him and once for their keeper. Did you not see the conditions?

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I can't be bothered to re-read all 13 pages of this thread), but I'm a bit disappointed the phrase 'banana skin' hasn't come up in relation to this match.

Football is ruined, I tells ya....

Terrible display from Steer.

Should have saved the goal , despite a massive deflection , I mean if you dive the wrong way you are clearly at fault.

Terrble penalty save as well , he really should be catching it , and quite frankly you should expect better when someone blasts the ball towards the corner of the goal from 12 yards.

Likewise for the save in the second half. Totally unnecessary to dive . Why he didn't just stand still and catch it lord only knows.

Sack him today.

I think most players put in a shift last night, apart from Hourihane and Samba, who were pretty dire.

They certainly can't do it on a wet Wednesday in Colchester.

Steer had a great game and could easily become our number 1 if we don't get Johnstone permanently at the end of the season.

It's becoming necessary to read the posts on here with a filter; one which automatically adjusts the opinions upwards about 4 points of performance on a 10 point scale.

I saw a number of positive performances and issues last night beginning with the STARTS Onomah, Green, O'Hare, Bree, Adomah and Steer were given. Of course it's a cup game against lower league opposition but we've been crying-out to see what those youngsters and returning from injury can do and Bruce did it. That's a welcome difference.

At the risk of paraphrasing 'Gladiators' catchphrase of 'Strength and Honour', what we saw on the night was 'Fitness and Confidence' in evidence and growing for some of those players which is a good thing. It's not a process which is complete yet but it's worthwhile.

The conditions dominated the game but we coped, played well enough away from home after an atrocious journey and did it without a number of Bruce's automatic picks which should give him a few options to think about; another good thing in my opinion as it will put pressure on him to remain flexible in his team selection not get fixed on the same 10 faces (or agents).

It's a win; cheer the f*^k up!

Not as bad a performance as some on here are suggesting. Yes it was bitty and a little unstructured, but if you piece together a scratch side, include a load of kids that don't play even at this level regularly, quite frankly, what do you expect. I saw enough in the individual displays of Onomah, O'Hare, Bree, Hogan, Steer to suggest that there is a nucleus of capable players. We dominated possession for long periods (59% according to the BBC), so how anyone can say we couldn't pass or retain the ball is beyond me.

What I learned is that Samba is not back up for Terry/Chester, Bjarnason is definitely not a left back, Hourihane was disappointing (esp as Onomah shone beside him). If I was being ruthless I would suggest that any of 12 "senior pros" could and should be replaced with better. The first team is becoming clearer but we will be relying on the youth set up to fill in if there are injuries. Unfortunately, I can't see anyone coming in for the majority of the 12 that are regularly identified on here.

Yeah, conditions as I said before we started in this thread would play a big part in equalising the teams. A win is a win.

I like wins!

Yes we won - bonus. My concern is that, atrocious conditions aside, we were struggling to put this tie to bed early. We score an early goal and then concede a penalty almost immediately - good save from Steer. We get a lucky second and almost concede again straight after. We do concede a lucky deflected goal, and we are on the back foot again. We start the second half in determined fashion and create a hatful of chances but don't put them away, any of them finding the net would have probably seen them off - the old problem still. We allow the opposition to build up a head of steam and we suddenly have to scramble and scrap to preserve what we have. Skin of teeth we are through. I'm not saying we should be walking through games like this against lower opposition, afterall they had nothing to lose so of course they are going to be bang up for it - taking the scalp of Aston Villa is still a prize for many a League 1 or 2 team. But we need to be just as professional, respectful and put out a team that will do what is needed to be done, and whilst it is nice to see a good crop of youngsters coming through, we also need to have players out there on the pitch to lead the way. We have squandered millions on players who are not of the calibre we should expect to have at our club. For the past 7 years we have seen a decline in quality for cheap options.

RDM and Bruce have wasted millions on poor purchases and we now find ourselves stuck with these players and up against the FFP limit. We can't shift the likes of Gollini, Amavi, McCormack, Elphick, Tshibola because we signed them on big contracts and every other club can see they are not worth the money we shelled out and that we want to try and get return on. All we can do is loan them out and hope they play well enough to earn a lucrative contract elsewhere. The only one we have managed to move on is Veretout. Even recent signings like Lansbury, De Laet, Hourihane, Bree, Bjarnesson have so far not shown evidence of their worth to the club and fans are questioning if these players will improve us sufficiently to help us back to the Premier League. Fringe players like Gardner have to be sold on but we will get very little by way of transfer fee - £3m tops. Even players like Adomah and Hogan are hit and miss. For every decent game they play they also play awfully the next game - no consistency, and that is why we struggled last night despite the weather, to win this comfortably and with some solidity. What last night proved was we are short on quality and depth in our squad should we get a few injuries. Yes Jedi, Kodjia are on their way back and Grealish is out for a while, but that's 3 key players we need now. I know its only the second game of the season, but with a full pre-season behind them, surely by now they are settled and into their stride, familiar with formations and styles of play, know their team mates strengths and weaknesses and be a cohesive unit. As I said at the start - a win is a win and wins breed confidence, so let's hope for more of them.

Sorry if it goes against the grain but I can only take positives from last night. First of all well done Bruce for giving all the fringe players a game and still coming away with a win it also should put a stop to all the talk about "he should be playing" (The players not getting a game are always world beaters on till they actually play). The conditions were poor but lets face it we play at least 4 months of the season in poor weather so suck it up. The kids gained valuable experience but cant see any ready made superstars among them. Bruce and ourselves now know exactly what we have be that good or bad. Hope he does similar in the next round as well cannot see us winning the cup and lets be honest if we are in the promotion shake up come the end of the season no one will be worrying about cups.

Happy with the win; don't think you can read anything into the performance as a whole, although individual players did well. Looking at the team sheet, lack of a good defensive midfielder was the obvious weakness (is Hourihane one?) and it showed. Wonder what's happened to Lyden; thought he had promise.

Who's better as back-up CB, Samba or Elphick?
