Thought Steer had a good match. Johnstone picked up a knock in training, apparently.

We don't look like scoring goals, but we ought to; we have some decent players there. A few problems:
(1) Bruce's idea of an attack is bizarre. Gabby on his own, then Hogan on his own. Neither can do that sort of thing. Stick Hogan and Gabby together up front and we might get somewhere, Gabby with his pace and Hogan with his movement.
(2) Goals are scored from players combining, but it looked as though no training had gone in to that side of it. Elmo and Green were putting crosses in, and those in the box were in the wrong position to receive the crosses, and also were too close to the defenders.
(3) Set pieces were awful. Again, looked poor organisation. And poor balls going in.

Lansbury is shockingly poor. Today confirmed that.

Elmohamady looked decent - pace, looking to take people on, getting some half-decent crosses in. Unfortunately, no one anywhere near being on the end of them. For a change.

Whelan looked ok as well.

That's about it.

Highlight of the match: when the bloke behind me said to his mate, "Bacuna is at least 10 times better than Grealish. He's 10 times the player Grealish is."

He said all of this with a straight face :19:

Was his name holtelower

Hmmmmmmmm

I am really flummexed and to be honest a tad concerned by all this.

Firdtly, and I know this is hypocritical as I am currently sitting around a pool, but 10,000 really is a pee poor attendance to honour one of our/ and certainly their greatest managers in history. Could you imagine when Alex Fergusun goes, they could sell out Old Trafford 20 or 30 times over, and I bet Nottm Forest didn't have trouble filling the City Ground when Cloughie died. I expected at least 25k today.

Like him as we did GT got us promoted and finishing runner up in old div 1.

Cloughie won the league and 2 European cups. Fergie won.. .....
Do I need to go on?

Taylor is nowhere near those achievements. Can't see the comparison myself.

I'm not a great one for stats but... Most goals come from set pieces rebounds and movements consisting of less than 4 passes .

We seem to think the come from taking as many passes as possible until we give the ball away.
Our build up play is as slow as most of the players

Absolutely they are shit . One can't defend and the other one won't score. I'd play davis up front and bree at right back.

We looked solid today but landsbury , gabby and mr hand grenade can do one. Bacuna you can jog to reading as well. Terry is the bollocks and worth every penny.

Thought both Hutton and Gabby had good games today.

Agree, worryingly they looked the better ones.
Whelan & Terry were class, Elmo did ok as did Green, Lansbury was hiding watching his hair didn't mess up.
Jed Steer did well

I will get bored of saying it this season.

Anyone who wonders why Hourihane isn't cutting it.

Check his age, check his career to date.

Then ask yourself why at his age he has never played higher than mid table championship.

Answer.

He is not very good.

OK: the positives. Wasn't sure about Whelan in the previous match but today he looked good. Terry looked class, as ever, but you expect that. Steer is surprising me; looks sound, might get preferred over Bunn. Gabby looks fast and up for it; he can't do it on his own but if we can find more attacking pressure from elsewhere then he could be very effective. Hutton's playing well, and the rest of the defence, Chester and Taylor, about what you expect. Green and Elmo are giving us width, but we seem to be lacking the right movement in the middle to make use of it.

It's players in their box and the movement to go with it we need to sort. Is Bruce holding something back? Not convinced that we've yet seen the team he'll put out against Hull.

Holtelower , it is ridiculous to compare what Sir Alex did at Man Utd and what GT did for us. Also you overlook the fact that originally this game was due to be played at Watford and was only a month ago that is was switched to Villa Park. People make plans in the summer , funnily enough they go on holiday , I believe you are one such person.

To moan about a poor attendance on your keyboard from your sunbed opens you up to so much ridicule it's untrue.

Anyway under the circumstances 11, 000 wasn't too bad in my opinion.

Hutton - good? Did you see, for example, his foray forward just before the end where his pass was so diabolical it made me cringe. Agbonlahor couldn't hit a barn door.

Well said Den.

Still ranting Holte I see, you're looking like that drunk in the park with every passing day and I GET the irony.

But you rarely look back for responses disproving you do you.

I'll see you again in a week.

You cannot slate the attendance if you're not there.

I wasn't. I'm on an unexpected trip (and miss my first opening game since missing after brain op.. 96 was last one missed I think)

It is holiday time.

Not sure it was built up right either. Could have been a quid in. But seen some valid moans that there wasn't a proper tribute to GT.

Should have been an event. Ex players of his playing a mini match before or whatever. St least ex players paraded at half time.

These things need proper billing, thought and execution

This was just a come day, go day friendly. That's OK but not when billed as a tribute.

Hey ho. All eyes on next week. If Bruce continues to do the same old same old we will get the same old same old.

Gabby ran about a lot, he continually fails when one on one and the one time when in the box he passed out of the box so badly it went for a (or towards a... I forget) a throw in. Also woeful pass in second half nowhere near any of the players in the box. Commentator (yeah all of Kuala Lumpur to enjoy on a night and I was in my room watching lol) said Bruce had a fit.

He has many fits (I sit right by the bench a a many of you know and hear the banging of boarding a lol) that's fine. But then do something about it.

Over to you Steve. My hopes are still with you.

Gulp.

I don't think it's necessarily fair to focus on individuals in team Bruce / Calderwood to be honest, we have seen shitloads of different players and team shapes with pretty much the same end product.

The team looks to have no plan or playing style, it's basically all leg it back when we have lost the ball and lump it into the channel to Kodjia ( oh shit no Kodjia so maybe Gabby can do something ) if we get it back.

We had 5 full backs on the pitch for last 20 minutes, the wide players then just didn't know what to do albeit Watford looked like Barcelona in second half due to us completely stopping playing.

As mentioned above it was same old same old, no matter who we buy and what we try and do it's the same.

If there was a cohesive style, a glimmer of control and organisation in the midfield and forwards then I could dig out individuals.

With this current coaching and management team I don't think it makes any difference, you can't say replace one for another as bar one or two they all look lost.

I believe yesterday's first half was decent which I didn't see, my thoughts are based on second half and all the other games I have seen pre season.
