done nothing for years... is he going to want to now? Maybe in his twilight he's realised he wants to play again.

Not sure... one or two older heads I get, but are we going full on dads army now?

He looked decent v the mighty Walsall.

I am a bit lost for words on our transfer policy. Is this the team Wyness said we were building for promotion, to be followed by the 'second' squad to keep us up. Can't wait for the 3rd squad to go on to become the biggest club in the world, as promised by Dr X.

I really hope they know what they are doing....although I would rather give Samba a go than serial piss-takers Richards and especially Flabby.

Samba was very decent v Walsall.

Plus he is massive and we should use him if only to scare the s*** out of the opposition.

Yes, I guess the outlay is nothing too risky, and Veretout should cover it, assuming he goes. And on evidence, I reckon someone will come in for Amavi at some stage.

Get rid of those and we'll be around £12m to the good.

I guess I will wait till the window SLAMS SHUT (copyright Jim White) before passing judgment.

It's nice to see how we are building for the future that is for sure. Top three team in how many years?

He's been a mercenary for years, one club to another, many on high fees.

We will see.

Despite my previous post, I will go out on a limbs and suggest we will struggle to get promoted this season.

Not based on Samba joining us, just overall feeling. Just feels like too much muddled thinking and a kind of 'pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey' approach to the way we are looking to play...

Luckily, I am not a professional football manager, so it might not be too bad

Yes he looked decent against Walsall, which doesn't mean alot but he can only perform against whoever it is he plays against.

Must have knuckled down to be fair. He has been there since spring time was it?. So not as if everyone has just jumped into it. Probably low risk in terms we aint stuck with him.

With the experience of Terry, Jedinak, Whelan, Samba and Chester at the back we really shouldnt be suffering the last second conceding of goals that blighted us last season.

I did say at the end if last season we needed a centre back as we only had Baker and Chester, with Elphick not in the equation because he was a disaster waiting to happen. Baker seems injury prone which left Jedinak or a young un to come in. We have 2 now and Terry and Samba ain't to shabby in my humble.

But, yes this is definately the team to get us up being built. Good job the plan is to get a team to stay up once we are there. We will need to.

Good - he deserves it !!!!

He came and trained with us for over 6 months for no pay - that shows commitment.

He has played the pre-season friendlies and oozed class.

He has had that quality all our great defenders have, like God, Laursen etc... whereby he doesn't have to run, because when the ball is lumped forward, he is instinctively in the right place at the right time. It does not matter whether you are playing Shrewsbury and Walsall or Barca and Bayern - that cannot be taught, thats natural.

Him Chester and Terry - quite frankly, I would be happy if we were aiming for top 6 premier league with that, never mind promotion from the Championship.

Welcome Beast - I have a feeling you will turn into a cult hero down here.

As I've hinted on Facebook, the club might now be able to apply for grants from Age Action.

He may not be an automatic choice on a regular basis, but I look at it this way - he's closer to a first team shirt than Richards, so now get rid of Richards......

I thought signing Richards was inspired and thought he looked good initially. Him and Lescott should have been fantastic.....I'll get my coat then.

Think the Samba signing is sensible for a year. No fee, not mega wages (I hope). He will be an asset and could make the transition into the PL. 33 is not old these days, so he could resign if he proves his worth this year.

I see it as a means to an end, we can now offload 2-3 centre halves for cold hard cash knowing we've got Samba on a 12 month deal for nothing but a signing fee.

Financially it makes sense even if I don't get the signing itself.

Like Merde I thought Richards and Lescott were good signings, and to be fair to Richards his stats (I know dirty word at Villa) were good compared to the rest but he was so wobbly in the middle of defence, he was better at right back.

Lescott, well just no.
