Yes, Baker has been very good since returning to the starting line up. Always promised so much but a mixture of terrible luck with injuries and occasional lack of brain activity hampered him. Seems his year at Bristol did him good as he's not as reckless as he once was.

He signed a 4 year contract the day before he went to Bristol , which was a bit bizarre so i don't think he was ever going to leave .

Not quite sure why we're getting updates of how Clark is doing, it's not like he was ever a big or important player for us. Maybe Newcastle have been so starved of good centre halves that they actually think he's something special? Personally I was brought up watching a team that's had the likes of McGrath, Teale, Southgate, Ehiogh, Melberg and Laursen so Clark never looked anything like a good class of defender. Even some of the lesser guys like Cahill, Ridgewell, Cuellar and Davies are ahead of him in my eyes. If you want to update us on how well Newcastle are doing then at least pick someone I'd be interested in. Mitrovic looks a good player to my outside viewpoint, what's he like?

To be truthful I just thought it was an excuse for some decent multi-forum debate rather than the old skool tit for tat that ruins places with some honest views on a player we'd signed from you in Clark.

As for Mitrovic. Well I could say that he's like what has been insinuated in the press? However that would be too stereotypical and off the mark.

He IS, like a box of fireworks that comes across like his fuse is always exposed and in danger of some days it being set off but why wouldn't he when his homeland has been in wars or had their issues with the Croats and what not. Watch Serbia the next time they're on Sky and all the team are a bunch of nutters.

Having said all this though, Mitrovic is a young bloke who had to adapt to the English game and he has. For me, he is going to be some target man and in my opinion he needs a partner rather than an attacking midfielder that bombs on.

Rafa has said that he'll play with 2 strikers at some point but now isn't the right time and you'll be hard pressed to find anyone that will argue against that.

Mitrovic has an aura about him because when he's involved or comes on as sub, he lifts the place and offers more than goals. He's a catalyst for extra effort, extra enthusiasm and he makes things happen.

He was a 1 in 4 striker in his debut premier season and this time round is 1 in 2 with a trademark machine gun goal celebration to boot.

He is so iconic that a song was made about him after a game or 2 which was later picked up by a Wigan fan on youtube and changed to the Will Griggs on fire one before Sky latched onto it and changed history. We're not a bitter lot as it's still sung with the player even joining in now.

Then.

Now.

I too feel we kept the right one in Baker. We couldn't keep both so for me Baker is more a centre back than Clark. He really seems to have grown of age this season and is forming a good partnership with James Chester.

Wonder how many of yous would have him back now after he left without much of a do.

In an organised defence which is now the best in the league, he is my player of the season and I dont think he lost a header yet again today.

Given our season last year we were happy to have a fire sale.

Personally Chester is the only defender in our employ who I feel is better than him but a Clark Chester partnership would be a disaster I doubt they'd compliment each other. Both are more coverage based I feel Clark has always looked weak when you expect him to be a stopped rather than a cover/sweeper type as he reads the game fairly well.

Unfortunately the growing pains with Clark in his early years mean most fans will always view him with that lense.

Think Clark needed to leave. Glad for the lad he is doing well. Here it was very much up in the air as to whether he was good enough, or should be given a run in the team.

Baker can thank Tim for his progress. Sherwood said he saw something there but thought he was a late developer so sent him out on loan. It worked.

Very good post, completely agree.

I know there's a bit of bad blood between Villa and the Geordies however I don't personnally have anything against Newcastle - great city, great fans, great club, I hope that Clark develops and does well, it was in the interests of both the club and himself that he left. We all needed a change of scenery, if he helps Newcastle to the Prem then good on him.

For me, he could do with bulking up a little, he doesn't have pace to lose but is a little weak sometimes. He can read the game well but got caught making silly decisions for me like diving in from behind 40 yards from goal and getting turned or giving away a stupid free kick.

Edit: Posted on page 2 which I forgot about and basically repeated myself

Clark annoyed some in an interview once he left saying Rafa was already working on his game and improving him. He added he got none of that sort of thing at Villa.

Some saw that as disloyal, I saw it as a fascinating insight as to why we've had so many youth players come in with great promise only to be sold for next to nothing.

That's interesting and we the fans can either sulk about his loyalty or take his feedback on board. That's the sort of thing the Sporting/Football Director at the club should be bringing up at board meetings surely?

Too much instability at the club at all levels not just the playing staff, if the senior players aren't developing what about the 16-18 year olds

Might be fine in this division, which alot of us thought aswell, but you maywell change your mind next season. Premier league quality he ain't.,

Well done on going up this season. Plenty of room going in your trophy cabinet.

Counting no chickens as anything can and has happened before but we're definitely in a decent place at the minute. Basically we've been averaging just over 2.1 points per game this season and have just come through a patch where it's been said that we've had a wobble.

Not sure if 25 points out of the last 33 available is a wobble and a fair few of those games without Dwight Gayle as well. Basically just 25 more points out of the 48 available at an average of 1.5ish per game will see mission accomplished although Rafa wants the title.

If we do go up and Rafa is allowed to have a nice budget instead of media driven shite saying we're big spenders on a net spend of MINUS £30 million, then I reckon Clark will be a squad player at best in the premier. That's not taking anything away from him this season although he will be given the chance to impress next season under a new manager no doubt as I dont think Rafa will stay due to the politics behind the scenes.

As for a trophy cabinet, what's one of those?

By no means will you hear any Newcastle fans even dare to whisper we've completed any job but as a fan of over 40 years I reckon we'll miss the honesty of this league.

By honesty i mean there's less 'look at me' shite from the players and there's more respect from fans with many enjoying the occasion of coming up to our place just as much as the game itself. It's a throwback to when football was less about the financials than anything else.

Clark seemed to go in spells where sometimes he looked a class player, but other times he looked a bit crap. I'm not surprised he is playing well for Newcastle, he is good enough to play in the premier league probably for a lower team so he should be good enough for the Championship.

As for Baker I am still not convinced by him. He was playing well earlier in the season but has gone off the boil recently. He is a good tackler and blocker but I still think he lacks the intelligence on the pitch, he probably just about gets away with it at this level though
