I won't lose any sleep if he moves on.

Bags of commitment but short on ability. Played out of his skin last season, but there is no getting away from the fact he's limited. Losing him from the wage bill would be a plus.

Is it the right time though. Bree is very young and De Laet is recovering from injury. Is he up to speed and will he be able to be introduced fully?

Would Jan not be better?

What am I saying. I have no clue do I. Bruce will know if the players he has are capable and if he feels Hutton is surplus then fine.

Not seen enough of De Laet to put my faith in him as a starter or back up yet.

Hutton - I know what I'm getting.

I like Hutton. People don't like him for whatever reason, but for the championship he'd do a decent job for any side, as he did for us last season. We do have 3 right backs though so one of them has probably got to be moved on.

Didn't Hutton just get a contract extension?, or was that just triggered due to games played?
At 40k a week and a fee and FFP to consider, maybe moving him on isn't the worst move in the world, but there's at least 5 or 6 I'd happily see moved on before him.

If we are playing a back 4 next season , with Chester, Terry and Taylor, then in my eyes, Hutton is the perfect right back to make us totally and utterly solid. I can't imagine many players breaching them - and therefore , Hutton needs to stay.

However, if we are going to a back 3, of Chester , Terry and Baker, then both Bree and De Laet are probably better options at the "wing back" role.

So it really does depend on what Bruce has planned.

If he goes though, he will go with my total thanks, because over the last few sorry years, players who actually gave a shite were in short supply, and he was one who did.

The Scottish Cafu has at times been our best player (which says a lot of where we are) but a move would be nice.

We have to move forward as a club - in spite of his recent up turn in form, to suggest Alan Hutton is of the required quality that we need, is laughable - regularly MIA for the past few years, ok he has had 4-5 decent games last year, but just cos Flabby got a goal against SHA, does that mean he should be kept on the books. We continually moan about the youngsters never getting a chance - if we are not moving forward, we are losing ground on the opposition.

Is Alan Hutton adding to the dynamic of the team, is he the one barking orders, organising - ffs he barely knows where he should be playing himself. Let everything in the past go, anyone who was associated with that awful relegation season can go for me and I won't look back in anger. New owner, new board, new players, new history in the making for me.

Should have left 5 years ago. Dreadful defender who put in more effort when his place was under threat. Take richards , gabby , gardner and elphick with you please.

Like his attitude but as others have said, with De Laet returning and Bree on the scene, it makes sense that one goes and it might as well be the older player.

I had thought Hutton's contract was up last Friday and hadn't heard anything about an extension, but given he's turned up for training, it seems he's on some sort of deal.

I'd certainly like to see him gone. Some decent (that's decent, not great) performances in the last few months were welcome, but he was far too often lazy and cynical in the past when we needed him. If De Laet is fit, I would rather see him providing cover while Bree becomes first choice. Bree has experience in this league and has done well. No point leaving him on the bench. Getting Hutton off our books has been a dream of mine for a long time - needs to happen soon.

Any idea what the fee would be?

I'm pretty surprised anyone is interested in buying him.

Pretty sure an extension was triggered after he reached x amount of games.

Plenty of effort and heart but short on real quality. He doesn't cross a great ball but I've always been of the view that if you want quality crosses get a proper winger.
If he goes good luck to him and if he stays he could be a useful backup. I'd rather be looking to the future and he isn't it.

Ironside, have you never thought that a quality cross becomes a quality cross, by the movement of the forwards.
The most effective crosses aren't played onto the head of a forward but, into a space for the forward to run onto.

That's true 1958 but how often have we seen a villa player racing past a defender and putting in a decent cross on the run with the defence facing back towards its own goal and our forwards running in on it? Our players seem to prefer to check back, change feet and allow the defenders to get into a position where they are facing away from goal ready to head the ball away.
I agree that our forwards don't help by not busting a gut to to get beyond the defenders.

Wouldn't be bothered in the least if he left. Brilliant athlete, great work ethic (bar the odd time when he seems to dawdle tracking back) and I'd be fine with him being a back up to Bree this season but he's just not good enough to be a starter for a team with aspirations of promotion as he can't do anything football related with any competence. Crossing, passing, positional awareness, marking and any defending that doesn't involve desperate lunging slide tackles are all things he is hopeless at. If we're planning on playing 3 at the back though I'd definitely keep him as that wing back role is not one Bree looked comfortable in.
