Even now he's slowed down a bit he's still quicker than most defenders so why oh why does he come inside where he'll get crowded out?

Thats just what happens naturally to central players who are thrown out wide not to mention he isnt left footed and possibly was even told by Bruce to get close to Hogan. I don't think that even comes down to 'football intelligence' certain things are natural and could well be reinforced by tactics.

That left wing has been another pain point for us for years. We havent had a left winger out there in years Downing was the last one and even in his glory days Ashley Young tended to have that wing.

We've been playing with 'inverted' wingers for 10 years and you'd argue we havent had a true winger in even longer than that. Milner was a hardworking grafter, Downing played a lot on the right hand side, Ashley Young never played on the right, Nzogbia was a disaster so that leaves Albrighton as the closest player to a true winger we've had in that time frame. I think the only time Downing played left was for one season when Houllier played Young through the middle.

Still pains me what happened with Houllier the only manager to play an orthodox system in the past decade.

We all know he is going to start at the week end....I've mentally prepared myself for it. !

We have to hit the ground running and an opening win would be a great tonic.

Is GA the man to score the goals I somewhat doubt it. (will be more than happy if I'm proved wrong)

Well I'm glad he's proving everyone wrong. He's looking sharp confident and more mature. Let's get behind the lad.

Who are you, what game are you watching, are you his agent? How the **** has he proved anybody wrong, never mind everyone.

I can't forgive gabby for not standing up to be counted in the last two years when we really needed him. That said, while far from perfect, thought Saturday was his best game in years. Took the goal well enough although we all expected him to fk up the one on one, as he has done consistently.

Liked how he was getting stuck in and generally causing them problems.

Looked less of a liability than Lansbury and Whelan anyway.

Jesus - did you see his panic stricken amateurish hoof up the pitch in the second half for example, it was like watching a donkey play, zero composure, zero skill, just zero. Anyone with a modicum of skill would have controlled the ball and passed it to a team mate. It was so so so crap - but he still gets picked which says it all really.

Yes that was poor, as was 50% of what I saw in the second half. Tactics, technique and decision making all very average, not least from our amiable manager. Just like a number of the players (gabby included), he seems out of his depth.

Judging him on the now is all that matters to me. Played one scored one, you have to play him. Score every week and you keep playing him so I hope he scores tomorrow night and keeps going.

We will be nowhere near the top 6 with Gabby as one of our main "Goalscorers". I thought fair enough for Bruce giving him a second chance to see if he can be a decent sub for us as it was clear noone was going to take the waster off our hands, so if we are paying him 50K + then make him earn it. But to put him as our main man and rely on him to score 20 odd at any level is laughable and it just shows how far we have fallen, and how clueless Bruce is.

He should have been spending pre season trying to strike up a partnership between Hogan and Mccormack, 2 proven goalscorers at this level if you play to their strengths. Either Bruce isnt capable or cant be bothered of putting a footballing team together that plays to their strengths. Instead, Gabby fits into his hoof it philosophy far easier, and he would rather give him his 27th chance rather than give McCormack a 2nd.

In my opinion he should be nowhere near the squad let alone the 11, If we are not going to get another forward in, even with the limited options we have I would rather bring through the young prospects we have like RHM, Davis and Ohare who has shown far more pre season than Gabby, but no doubt will get loaned out before the end of the window, and get them playing with Hogan and then Kodjia.

Gabby compliments no strike partner, hes a headless chicken with no link up play in his locker, no pace anymore and more importantly no goals. If hes the answer then the question is how will villa fail to get promoted again....

Be great if some of you grew up and just ignored him.

He plays wide left for one game and he's suddenly a key player, the depth of perception here is quite astounding. Maybe we should just have total indifference toward him and all our lives will be enriched.

I wish I hated anything as much as some people hate Gabby. The hate is so strong it alters all perceptions about the player and even the manager who is now a clueless donkey who stumbled to promotion 4 times.

He's done well to turn his Villa career round.

He'll never hit the heights of those 3 seasons he had under MON, and he'll never be a top class finisher, but if he's prepared to put the work in I'm happy to have him as 3rd choice behind Kodjia and Hogan. Definitely a better option than McCormack.

I'm sorry he hasn't turned anything around. Him and richards are the epitamy of how low we have sunk over the last 5 years , the last 2 being the worst. He shouldn't be anywhere near aston villa fc , he should have been bye bye under Houllier.

I agree long term he needs to be replaced. But in the current squad he's easily our 3rd best forward so there's a place for him in my eyes if his attitude is right.

Richards too. Attitude never in question. Good guy around the place, if he can keep himself fit could be a useful player. Better than Elphick.

Gabby could score a hat-trick every game and still be labelled as sh*t by some.

In the absence of Kodjia, him and Hogan is the best combination we've got up front, with Davis/RHM on the bench ready to have a go when he tires. Only problem is Bruce is more likely to play Samba as a striker than Davis or RHM.

Other teams in this division bring through their under 23s to great effect, exactly what we should be doing in place of a useless never has been like Gabby.

Is he really a better option for the team on the left at the expense of Green??

Hes finished and we should be looking not only to the future, but to what these players can add to the team now. At best Gabby should be coming off the bench with 15 to go because that's all he has in him, e.g. against the blues.

Its not a hate thing, its a will for villa to be as good as we can and his inclusion is demoralising not only for fans but probably for some of the players too, especially the kids coming through.

Maybe though some think hes not only going to suddenly turn into the player he has never been, but also the perfect role model for our future generation to look up to, maybe Bruce should re instill him as club captain.

I don't blame gabby I blame Bruce's judgement, poor! He keeps talking about Achilles heels etc yet he refuses to remove them!

If Ross had been fired up and supply was right, he'd easily beat what Gabby can do hitting the target wise.

Seems Bruce can give Gabby a (millionth) 2nd chance but not Ross who has a proper scoring record.

I dare say Samba, played right, would score more than Gabby.

I hope Gabby keeps scoring if played. I hope he's not given a new contract. I hope to see his sort out of the club.

I have a feeling he'll get a new contract and stop the effort once again. Based on what? Not because I need to grow up (CDX !) but on history.

He'll probably be injured just after a new deal anyway.

BUT if he really has now turned a corner and can start to be what I don't think he's been for 8 or more seasons then cool, we need goals, dont' have to like the players it's not as if we are going dating is it!?

Gabby has earnt a 2nd, 3rd, 4th chance though, in part due to the many happy memories he's given us over the years, those derby day goals, those goals against the likes of United and Arsenal, and in part coz he's knuckled down and got on with forcing his way back into the managers plans.

McCormack has done nothing for my club, so I have no soft spot for him, and by all accounts hasn't done anything to warrant a chance since returning for pre-season despite Bruce telling him the door was open.

Also Gabby has done it at the top level. McCormack never has so why this belief that he's a better player?

When you weigh everything up Gabby is the better option for me.... and you know I turned on him when he downed tools and got fat in our relegation season, I'd had enough of him, but he seems to be working hard to try to make up for that. He doesn't have to. He could just sit in the reserves and earn his money.

Oh and I don't think he should get a new contract by the way. No way. We need to move forward.

But in the here and now he's our 3rd best striker, and in the absence of Kodjia I believe Gabby and Hogan together is our best chance of goals.
