Terrific performance by Iceland. Population 333,000. There's nothing inevitable in football.

Maybe Thor has something that we're not yet seeing.

How do Spurs pay so Little?

Dele Alli is being offered an increase from £50k pw to £80k
More than Eriksen, Alderweireld etc.
Even Kane is only on £100k pw

Aren't some of our guys on £50k ?

For many playing for your country means more especially if you're a smaller nation. The coach probably knows and understands Thor much better than Bruce and in all likelihood Thor maybe doesnt have the same competition to play in his favoured position so Bruce isnt setting a team up to get the best from him.

Northern Ireland and Wales have a connection with the fans that watch them . England if they do well will subject the fans to a hello magazine special as to how wonderful they and their partners lives are .

We (England) think we’re bad, spare a thought for Holland/The Netherlands... they’re terrible! I didn’t realise how poor their side was bar a few players.

Was non league today, saw that Stourbridge were playing Halesowen (Number 9 Derby) so took a short trip over to the Black Country to check it out. Good game and over 2,500 turned up which made for a good atmosphere which even included a few smoke bombs. Would like to see the return in Halesowen if I can.

Given their population, the lack of strength and worldwide appeal of their top division and thus resources available the Dutch have every excuse to be poor.

Given the strength of the supposed 'best league in the world' and the resources available to clubs there are simply no excuses for how abject the England team are.

wonder how Belgium manage without a top flight league and a small country etc etc ?

the problem with the best league in the world (to watch) is the money which means home grown don't get a chance so plenty of excuses given the pitiful pool of 'talent' to pick from.
besides most people aren't that arsed and would rather a good run in the caraboa cup than international success - so sad

Where does Thor play for Iceland

The point is he was bought on the back of his performances for Iceland and Basel and promptly turned into Mr Average ... it's just dumb

It's astounding that we buy players and then play them to their weaknesses.

Lack of worldwide appeal... Ajax, feyenoord, PSV? Ajax imparticular have massive worldwide appeal and were in the Europa league final last season with a good young team, their best young players are always poached (klaassen, Everton for example who I’m sure will come good). They’ll be another period (ie 2010 World Cup) soon where they’ll produce a really good team and do fairly well and Belgium will fade off once that generation gets older, there are always cycles in football.

Why?. Was it because I failed to shoehorn in a dig at Steve Bruce ?

My post said lack of worldwide appeal of the LEAGUE not individual clubs

Are top players going to the Dutch league?. Are Asian tv clamouring to show Dutch games?. As of 2015 there were no Dutch clubs in the top 30 teams revenue wise in the world. Stoke and Swansea were. Teams like Ajax, PSV are like Villa, on the wane and in past glories

My opinion is with the players coming to join the league, revenue, facilities, population pool and participants to work with England should be way way better.

Agree with most of that Melon, but my only 'caveat' would be that it's probably because of the popularity, revenue, players coming in, the English players have struggled to make the breakthroughs they used to make.

As we saw to our (Villa's) cost, far easier to get in cheap foreigners than purchasing quality home-grown players. That's not to say we English clubs (especially the top flight sides) should be doing far better with their youth, by and large.

Chelsea, for instance. They have all these amazing young English players (Loftus-Cheek, Abraham, to name but two) who get very few opportunities in and around the first team, so get farmed out to lower league clubs, and by the time they return, the club have signed Jonny Foreigner from Spain and the squad place has been filled by a perceived better player.

This obviously has implications for the national team. Of course, from a population of 60-odd million, we should be doing FAR better than countries like Holland and Belgium, although it is no coincidence that the vast majority of the Belgian squad (currently flavour of the month, and the next big thing, apparently) are playing abroad in England, Spain and Italy.

Fair points JPA. You would think that all those things mentioned like increased revenue, top players coming in to play with our players would have at least some sort of positive impact though wouldnt you. But the national team just gets worse.

As for Belgium. They certainly have produced some good players but they have fallen short at both recent tournaments they were tipped for doing really well. Failed golden generation?. We have been there.
