Arrival seems to be a polarising film I see.

Did you naysayers just find it boring or what's the reason? I don't see how it's pretentious.

It's a poor attempt at being clever - i took it to be a big pile of propaganda about working together with a smudge of philosophising about linguistic relativity.

It's just slow with a lot of vacant staring.

But i've said it before - vacant staring wins oscar nominations

I loved it. I'm going to watch it again soon.

I thought the vacant staring was important to set a tone for the film that is a world apart from the non-stop action of the superhero films.

Each to their own I guess.

Nocturnal Animals

I thought it was very good, and very well done. Keeps you interested until the end.

Might not be everyone's cup of tea as there is a lot vacant staring, more so from Amy Adams. Must be her year for vacant stares!

I will concede that at least it's different to most other films out last year but i found Arrival really slow. But it's all personal preference isn't it.

I enjoyed Hacksaw ridge and someone else commented they thought it boring so it just goes to show what i know doesn't it?

The vacant staring drives me mad. At least there wasn't the inevitable sigh at the end of every stare like in a soap opera.

If someone in real life was pausing and looking vacant every 5 minutes i'd be suggesting that they visit a doctor to be tested for epilepsy not awarding them an oscar nomination.

I just think it makes the character look stupid (because i know it isn't epilepsy - i'm not saying people with epilepsy are stupid here but periods of staring is a symptom) when they're supposed to be highly educated. It really doesn't work for me.

Inception - awesome although the crazy effects when he's explaining to the girl about how it works in dreams don't look half as great on the telly at home. Chris Nolan is some fella.

He's got another one coming out in the summer about Dunkirk. It's staring Tom Hardy so it'll be awesome too.

The Prestige - another great film by Christy Nolan. I'm on a bit of a Nolan binge at the moment.

Swiss army man. Radcliffe's best performance to date - as a dead man.

Pile of turd. Give it a miss.
