Are Our Expectations Out Of Whack To Villa's Reality?

Stennyvilla often contributes to Vital Villa (as can anyone by the way, just email me at astonvilla@vitalfootball.co.uk) or use the submit an article feature on the site.

This one is a talking point and I guess what he is asking is, are our expectations totally out of whack with reality or not. That's right isn't it Stenny?!?

Stennyvilla said:

Sorry JF, I have only half an article, devoid of full analysis.

However, it occurs to me that when you put your regular polls on the site of whether we expect to win / draw / or lose, we fans are probably not very good at predicting the outcome.

Or alternatively, you could say, Aston Villa FC are very good at defying our expectations, by winning when we don't expect them to, and failing to win, when we expect them to.

I may be wrong, and have not got the available info to prove it, but it feels to me that a majority of the games at Villa Park have not gone with our expectations.

A 72% win for this weekend, hopefully will!. Recent results against Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, and Middlesbrough seem to show we cope better under pressure in difficult circumstances, than with the weight of expectation when we are expected to win.

Perhaps statistically the squeaked wins at Villa Park versus the likes of Bolton, Forest, and Fulham disprove this, but often performances have certainly not matched expectations, Bristol City included!

I do think some of it is just a typical fan optimism, like in the match threads in the forum, I put in pretty much every one 'clearly a villa win'... it's not always what I'm thinking but it is one of those 'things' that you start doing and then don't stop!

Looking at the fans opinions they very much expect them to win but have been let down too many times and fear they will be let down again.

Have to agree, I think most people want to be optimistic so put done a win, I know I do.

"Aston Villa FC are very good at defying our expectations..." They certainly are Stenny! Therein lies the problem. If you look up 'false dawn' in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of the Villa badge. Just when we think a corner has been turned, they mess it up. I do wonder if we have expectations any more, rather than just hope and blind faith? Our reality is that we are (at best) an above average Championship side, and I don't think that's what many of us expected. As things stand, I think we'd all settle for promotion and re-establishing ourselves in the top flight over the next couple of seasons.
