Hogan Determined To Keep Villa Starting Spot

Striker Scott Hogan has given Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce an emphatic message when it comes to signing a new striker this January window.

Having scored his second goal in as many games as Villa eased themselves into fourth place in the Championship table, Hogan's form is improving and after his own earlier words about himself and how things hadn't gone quite to plan following his big money switch from Brentford, he seems to be benefiting from his own knuckling down and midfield starting to service him in the way right.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail Hogan proclaimed.

'Forget signing a new striker, I'm your man!'

Having impressed people with his recent performances since returning to fitness and starting to get his sharpness back, Hogan was asked about the speculation linking us with Leicester City's Leo Ulloa.

'I will tell the manager 'don`t bother`. If you want to go and get someone, go on. But he isn`t going to play because I will keep my place. I ain`t giving it up now. I have sat on the bench, it has not gone as well as everyone hoped. The manager will tell you that. He is probably a bit disappointed and rightly so because I am as well. But he can do what he wants this month because I`m only thinking of myself. If I continue to work hard off the ball then I will play and I know I will.'

He added.

'If people want to buy, sell or talk about things. I am just concentrating on myself. I will get the goals, I know I will. If they buy someone, hopefully they won`t need them.'

Talking in general about his form and confidence, he went on to explain.

'In football, the more you convince yourself the more you believe it. You have to. You have to keep telling yourself, you are here for a reason. I know what I am good at. I have done it all my career. I have scored goals wherever I have been and the stats back that up. You have to keep doing it and convincing yourself. You have to tell yourself you are the best because otherwise you are not going to aspire to anything.'

He knows that belief is now starting to pay dividends for him.

'You are not going to get out of bed in the morning and work hard if you don`t believe you have the ability. You have to front up, regardless of what type of character you are. I believe I can do it and lo-and-behold, it is starting to come good. This is the first time I`ve played for a big, big club and I`m trying to show what I`m made of. I know I will keep scoring.'

Hogan's eye for the back of the net is starting to come into it's own now, and as long as we keep playing to his strengths I've no doubt he'll continue to score. The confidence is reassuring from him, but we still definitely need an alternative option as it will be needed in games and although Keinan Davis continues to impress, he is still developing and we need that extra goal threat.

Long may Hogan's form continue to improve though!

If he can keep injury free and he can keep banging in the goals that'll be great. But we can't rely on that if we're serious in making a run the the play-offs (as a minimum). But I do like his style. Obviously the time Steve Agnew has been spending with him is paying off. Long may it continue.

the sad thing he is no where near his best or being used to his potential,,, i just hope bruce can be flexible with his playing style to allow more penetration through the middle and more support for him its early days in the hogan grealish hourihane combination,,, and i expect it to get much much better if bruce allows it

No way can we rely on Hogan alone, his injury record is almost as bad as Gabbys. Good to see him starting to get his confidence back though

Got everything crossed he gets a lucky break now and stays clear of injuries. There is a cracking player in him if played right and I like his attitude.
