Aston Villa - Steve Bruce Will Never Win Some Fans Over

A decent post in the forum about Steve Bruce.

It is interesting how this Steve Bruce debate has developed over the past few months.

Initially he was being slated after a few poor results at the start of the season, tactically inept, negative, dinosaur tactics etc....with many suggesting he should have been sacked.

Now, just two months later, we're fourth and the debate is how the tactically inept, negative dinosaur may be able to get us promoted but won't be able to keep us in the Premier League. I expect if the useless git gets us promoted and keeps us in the Premier League with a mid table finish the debate will move on to how unsuitable he is to take us into the top six.

For some I don't think he'll ever win them over.

Last night was awful but we won....the mentality at the club is changing. At this point in time I couldn't care less about who could lead us to glory in the Premiership. Let's get there won't always be pretty, like last night, sometimes it might be disappointing like Sheffield Wednesday, sometimes it'll be bloody good like QPR, Norwich, Barnsley.

I can remember it being much the same in 1974/75 under Sir Ron. It wasn't all a bed of roses but in the same way, Bruce is starting to lay the foundations so severely lacking over the past few years. All things considered, the 'useless one' ain't doing such a bad job.....

Yes, interesting, nicely put. The worst are the ones that seem hell bent on WANTING him to fail. I do think it is the minority though.

I could post an essay on this one! Maybe because I’m a former coach, all the comments do my head in that little bit more. Some of the comments have been just plain stupid in my humble opinion... the same folks who call him a dinosaur, probably because he is grey and over 45 would be calling him too young and inexperienced if he was under 45 years old. Perhaps the comment that is the most mind boggling is the one saying “I don’t want us to get promoted under Bruce, because he’ll be useless in the premier league.” Are you a fan? A supporter? Nostradamus? And no, I’m not a “Bruce lover” just because I feel that the bloke deserves credit for starting the process of turning my train-wreck of a club into a contender and one with a little bit of its self respect returned....

I think the minority is correct. How you can actually want to see the team lose just to justify your criticism of Steve Bruce is beyond me and only displays a rather small minded person.

It is those who can see through his flaws and are not just fickle enough to look at plain results. We are the biggest club in the division (the Man City of the Championship) with arguably the best squad - certainly in terms of value and probably wage bill - and, from what I see, the best academy/young products. We should be in the automatic places. Bruce has started to get the results that our squad should be getting. Even in this recent run, I think the two losses referred to above were largely down to Bruce's inadequacies: - Wolves away when he went with his preferred 4-4-2. A ridiculous decision given we are playing one of, if not the strongest team in the division at their place. In effect it is a 4-2-4 and one of the two is the relatively old and immobile Whelan. We were whipped and that set up asked for it. Tactically inept. - Shef Wed at home when, again, he switched back to his 4-2-4. To make it even worse, it wasn't even to accommodate Kodjia but rather to get Hogan in the side! Again, why change when the 4-2-3-1 had worked magnificently against Preston? The Blues away game was another example where I cannot believe that whoever scouted them beforehand did not come back and tell Bruce that the only way they will get the better of us is by bullying our midfield. Jedinak should have started that game. And Tuesday night again showed how pathetic he is with substitutions. Elmo at 9 by the end of the night?? The ball kept coming straight back. I know we are short of options at 9 but I would rather have seen a re-shuffle and Samba or Jack (as a false 9) up there - at least we would have won headers or, in Jacks case, had a player that can get on the ball. I want to see a progressive brand of football that dominates clubs in this division. For me, unless we are playing a physical team like Blues, I would play Hourihane at 4 (where he did so well for Barnsley), Onomah at 8 (where I believe he wants to play and we might actually keep him if we let him develop there, and Jack at 10! The dinosaur that is Steve Bruce would never go on to the pitch without a DCM - Jedi or Whelan. No-one wants him to fail but some of us recognise his weaknesses and believe that, if we do get up it will be because of the strength of the squad and in spite of Bruce and not because of him.

Frankly, I have no strong opinions on Steve Bruce either way. He seems like a decent bloke, he has a very respectable track record at this level, and as others have mentioned, we have spent an absolute fortune and the very least we should expect is top 6. I desperately want to get promoted this season, and see no real reason why we can't go up automatically. Every manager makes baffling selection and tactical decisions, and we as fans are obviously all experts and know better than Bruce/Sherwood/Lambert/whoever. I do feel that more often than not this season, we have won games more by luck than judgement, but for the time being, I will take that if it means promotion.

Hey Langoe66 - I remember during 1980 quite a few having a pop at Saunders (or Sarnders as quite a few pronounced his name). This when moast were saying we were beginning to look like we had a decent side developing as long as we were lucky with injuires. In fact I sat right in front of a group of grumbly so-and-sos in the Trinity. And yes, that's you seat J109 ! Happy days.....

For the sake of clarity, I want Villa to win every game, every week. While I have certainly been critical of Bruce, and remain unimpressed with a number of aspects of our performances, I have ALWAYS prefaced my criticism with a heart-felt wish that he proves me wrong. I am gutted whenever Villa lose. Unlike the majority of our travelling support who are in many ways beyond criticism, I consider that the worse Villa game I have ever been to in my life was at Blackburn last season, when our own fans were supporting the opposition and willing them to win. Iwas diisgusted. Villa first, whatever, forever. While Newcastle have cake-walked this Division and got back at first attempt twice, I am realistic that it is a really tough Division - but we must be aiming to be top two. This talk of hoping we'll be there or thereabouts is not the target. I would also refer to the supposed boring football of Saunders successful team in 1974-5, when just Brian Little and Ray Graydon scored 50 goals between them, and we won the League Cup too. This season our defence is much better, but I agree with others above that more creative intent would help bring a much more positive vibe. A bigger intent and goal threat going forward would take pressure off our defence. Performances do matter, and better ones bring better results over the season, even if on a match by match basis, luck and freak circumstances may say different. We need to be better capitalise on the undoubted quality in our squad if we are to ensure automatic promotion. Bruce's version of what happened last season does not impress me. Hopefully, this season he and Villa will shine. At the end, if we fail, I want it to be because of overwhelming bad luck, not poor tactics, bad substitutions,, and an unwillingness to put games to bed when there is the clear opportunity to do so. I know we can't be consistently good every game. I know we are improving significantly. But a top two place still needs us to improve more. Keep our defensive solidity, yes please. But go for it a bit more please when circumstances shout out we can. UTV

Agree with this article 100%, I've been saying the same for a while now. Some people don't rate Bruce which is fair enough, we are all entitled to an opinion. But there is an element of those people who will not change their mindset on him no matter what our results are. They dissect every game to look for the smallest things to criticise, whenever we win it is despite of Bruce and purely down to the players - lose a game and its all Bruce's fault and they start talking of getting a new guy in, usually some young hungry fella from Portugal or Germany. If we do win promotion it will be down to him turning the club around, no team gets promoted from a 46 game season through luck.
