A Neutral Aston Villa v Blues Preview

A Neutral Aston Villa v Blues Preview

Aston Villa v Birmingham preview

Aston Villa takes on Birmingham City in the second city derby this weekend with more than just bragging rights at stake.

The home side will be looking to push their rivals further towards relegation with a win on Sunday. Villa are 12th in the league table right now, eight places above their bitter rivals. The home side will look to finish in top ten this season and then build towards their ultimate goal of promotion next season.

Meanwhile, a struggling Birmingham City appointed the former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp as their new manager earlier this week and they will be hoping for instant improvement here.

For Birmingham, this is a massive game and the Blues will need to deliver. If Redknapp can steer his side to glory on Sunday, it could give them the lift they need to beat the drop this season.

Both teams are heading into this game on the back of some poor performances, but Villa are certainly better than their opposition.

Aston Villa are unbeaten in four of their last six matches in all competitions and are likely to inflict further misery on a nine-game winless Birmingham side. Furthermore, the home side are unbeaten in five of their last six derbies against Birmingham.

The home side have struggled at the back in their last three matches, but they are certainly capable of putting on a solid display this weekend. Considering Birmingham's poor showing in front of the goal, Aston Villa could well churn out a clean sheet. Villa have kept three clean sheets in their last six outings.

As far as football betting is concerned, tipsters are likely to back the home side to win this weekend. Aston Villa have lost just three games at home in the Championship this season and are firm favourites to secure the three points. Enhanced Bets are offering some attractive odds for the second city derby.

Although both teams have had their fair share of problems in the last few weeks, Villa are heading into this game with a better side on paper. The managerial change at St Andrews will no doubt lift the Birmingham side and inspire them to put on a fight, but they are simply out of their depth here.

Redknapp's experience might help them escape a thrashing but the winless run is set to continue.

Whatever next, a neutral view on Labour by Theresa May! To add to the balance, the last six results of any two teams are often taken as an indicator of current form, with Villa having taken 10 points versus Blues 3. Statistics can prove anything, but using shots, as against useless "possession" stats, it is interesting to note that Blues have outshot their opponents (85 v 69) , and us, while our opponents have outshot us (67 v 77). Add on the fact that their last 6 included Newcastle and Brighton, plus the Redknapp effect for Blues, and the loss of Kodja for Villa, and the "current respective form" of the two teams does not point to a resounding Villa victory. But please just thrash them. Please.

This is all we have left before the long dry hot (I hope) close season. Pretty please give us something to smile about.
