Jack The Lad Told To Knuckle Down

Jack The Lad Told To Knuckle Down

Slightly strange comments in The Birmingham Mail from Steve Bruce today.

He says that Jack Grealish needs to be a 'better professional` and to 'stop hitting the headlines for the wrong reasons`.

Jack Grealish

Fair comment for last season but unless I`ve missed something, he`s not been making the headlines for partying, 'balloons` or collapsing drunk recently?

He`s also not been playing and I`ve not seen any moans from the player?

As you know, he played v Fulham and scored a stunner, with very little in the way of celebrating (or not with the fans) it has to be said. So is there still a problem behind the scenes?

Bruce says he`s got no doubt in the youngsters ability and that goals like he scored v Fulham only serves to remind everyone of that ability.

"It`s right that we talk about his ability but it`s important he understands that he needs to knuckle down and do the other side of it. That`s the hardest road for Jack to go down - to be a top-class professional and be as good as he can. If he`s got that and does that then he`s got an outstanding chance."

Jack Grealish

He then warns if he doesn`t knuckle down, there are plenty in the 'got ability but didn`t do anything with it` players graveyard... I paraphrased there!

"But ultimately I can`t sit on his shoulder every day of his life. He`s got to knuckle down and understand what he`s got."

Slightly curious. Maybe he`s not been being played for reasons we don`t know about? It does have to be said despite the great goal (and long may he score those) it looked very much like he needed to contribute far more during the game. The occasional goal and little else won`t cut it BUT if he`s not been being played and is low on confidence, hopefully the rest will come.

As Bruce says, you can see there is ability there, he`s now got to consistently produce it - and yes to do that, he`s got to impress the manager in training and get match time.

Seems to be saying his attitude hasn't been right?

Too inconsitant, with his talent , the wages he gets paid shouldn't need to be told to knuckle down, has the 'potential' to be a really great player but get the feeling he's easily distracted and will never be as good as he should be, oh boy do I hope I'm wrong.

Yes slightly bizarre comments by Bruce, but yesterday, as per usual, too casual and gave the ball away too cheaply. And he shows no urgency to track back and try and regain possession when he does inevitably lose it, just strolls around letting others try and clear up his mess. The goal was superb, but it's not enough every now and again. He has to bring more to the party, we don't have the luxury of carrying posers and passengers. I like the lad, but it's becoming more and more clear he is not going to make the grade, at least not with us.

My worry is, if he moves on,i can see someone else turning him into a top class player and we will look back and wonder why it didn't happen here, Albrighton among others spring to mind.Sherwood got the best out of him,but I agree with Eddy1 he shouldn't have to be told to knuckle down, just earn your wages when you put that shirt on.

Just doesn't do enough for me, shows flashes of brilliance for 5 minutes a game then seems to coast through the other 85. Jack has always looked more interested in playing for himself than the team, he always wants to take an extra 15 touches and pirouette past a defender rather than playing a quick pass or just getting the ball and driving straight at the defence. He's way behind Green for me at the moment.

Has to do more than he did yesterday even though his goal was quality.

Maybe there is something going on but I can't see how it helps anyone for Bruce to come out with these kind of public statements. He hasn't played for ages and did give us hope with 10 men when we were a goal down. He does need to do more I agree. But it's not going to happen if he's getting publicly undermined. Don't like the way Bruce comes out with public criticism of his players. It's not the first time and his performance is hardly stellar!!

I would suggest Bruce has tried the conventional arm around Jack but obviously he is trying a different tack now. As Jack has not made front pages in the press recently I would say it is more linked to attitude towards his work & training
