Video Highlights/Bruce Interview/Stats etc Wigan v Villa

Really poor game, poor pitch as well to be fair. Great great fans. And obviously a very welcome three points!

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has given a pretty honest summation of the overall performance in Saturday's victory over Wigan Athletic. Late second half goals from James Chester and Scott Hogan saw Villa travel home from the DW Stadium with a two nil victory and all three points on offer, and whilst Bruce was pleased with our second half improvements, the clean sheet and another win, he also knew the team simply had to perform far better than we had done on the day in the future. Result !! Normally difficult that lot.

Statistics go against us but we still won! Isn't that the way the Championship works? 5 wins in 6, 5 clean sheets and only 1 goal conceded! On this form does anyone believe we can actually make the play-offs?

What a great result against a team fighting for survival and away from home as possible Huge plus Scott Hogan scoring his first of hopefully many villa goals. Play offs still possible, but I would be more than happy with a top 8 finish with the momentum continuing into next season. On a sad note, we've won, where's all the comments. Let's have some positivity! VTID

Well that was awful. After a scraped win at Rotherham and a blunt but decent defensive performance at Huddersfield I thought surely we could play a decent away game just for once. But apart from Johnston who saved us from defeat and the centre backs (ignoring Jedinak's first half lapse that should have gifted a goal) we were terrible. How Bruce can watch that and not change things after 20 minutes is beyond me - you could see Amavi and and Hutton were simply not working as providing any forward momentum. Come half time still no change, but rather than give 5 minutes to see there was no change, it was left lingering on until Wigan finally woke up and realised they had nothing to beat and then should have gone on to do so. That they didn't was down to gross good luck plus Johnston. Two scraps of football when we should have been out of it then won it. I never saw anything in our previous sequence of decent results when Bruce first arrived to give me any confidence about our eventual destiny under his management. Ditto this better run now. Cue all the comments that it takes time, he'll get it right, etc etc. I want to live in hope but would like to see some semblance of football to help begin to think this is a manager that can deliver success. These players should be a lot better than this. Apologies to those who want to glory in another win but I want more from Villa than this.

Jeez Stenny... get a grip. What a ridiculous rant.

Bruce says got to be better than that. Hourihane says not a pretty win (we won ugly). I say I need a rant after watching that - but did anyone see it much differently? As I said our players are better than that!
stennyvilla

3 points, performances can follow - we have to go into next season without a losing mentality so for now that's all that matters to me.

Didn't watch the game but echo Stennys sentiment. If your playing well results will come if your not then your riding your luck. Let's hope the recent wins give us confidence to express ourselves on the ball and press higher up the pitch. UTV

For the first time in a long time ( apart from a few trips to Wembley ), I decided to make the long haul to Wigan today for an away game rather than VP. When a lot of time, travel and expense is involved it is easy to be critical, but I did manage to take some positives from a wet and windy DW stadium. First positive was the fact that I was walking past the main entrance when the Villa coach arrived and I saw Mr Steve Bruce's reaction to the many Villa fans that wanted a photo. He seemed a real nice guy and spent a lot of time. Small positive perhaps but real and nice to see. Second positive was the Villa fans themselves - absolutely superb in a true Villa tradition. After that, I am struggling ... pathetic ( especially in the first half ) football and we managed to make a poor Wigan side look as if they deserved something. At least 3 poor back passes which normally would mean 3 goals. A little better in the second half after the substitutions but still way below what we should expect. I take a little comfort from the 3 points and SB's sincere analysis after the game, but not really enough to make the long return journey make me feel it was worthwhile.

A win is a win and I'll take it all day long. If we performed badly and won then that's great as it shows we are building the winning mentality. Fergie's teams won many a league on still winning when not playing well. The fact we have so many injuries and where playing away against a team in the relegation battle then even better win I think. Big game next week let's keep the wins rolling on

I didn't see the match either but from what I managed to pick up, we weren't good. Like a cross between a rock and a hard place I suppose. Yes it's a good run we're putting together and yes we're growing in confidence as a squad, but surely the performances have to improve too. If we can do what we've been doing recently playing relatively poorly generally and with a long list of injuries, just imagine what we could do with a bit of quality football added to the mix.

5 wins in 6 and only 1 goal conceded in that time and some people still want to complain, unbelievable!! I cant remember many teams winning this league by playing nice tippy tappy football. We need a team ready to battle and fight to get the 3 points, even if it does look ugly at times, this is something we clearly lacked at the start of the season. If we want to go up next year we have to win when we don't play well, so its a positive sign for me. Not to mention the terrible list of injuries we've had over recent weeks has meant some players covering in positions that aren't their natural spot. I almost get the feeling some want Bruce to fail so we can get yet another young up and coming manager in and they can say 'I told you so'. For me I'm only interested in results at the moment, we can worry about the style of play when we get back in the Premier League.

The three points make it all 'ok' but it was dire and Bruce was right in saying he expects more. STILL delighted with the result and Hogan getting off the mark.
