Bruce - Got To Be Better Than Wigan

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has given a pretty honest summation of the overall performance in Saturday's victory over Wigan Athletic.

Late second half goals from James Chester and Scott Hogan saw Villa travel home from the DW Stadium with a two nil victory and all three points on offer, and whilst Bruce was pleased with our second half improvements, the clean sheet and another win, he also knew the team simply had to perform far better than we had done on the day in the future.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail as he met with the media post game, Bruce was especially pleased with the impact of the second half substitutes but overall the message was simply we have 'got to be better than we were today'.

'That`s how difficult the Championship is. They were really, really game. They`ve obviously had a change of manager, a change of shape and they caused us a few problems, especially in the first part of the second half. It`s good to see a little bit of resilience, but if we`re being honest, we`ve got to be better than what we were today.'

With a bit more experience on the bench as a few of our walking wounded return to fitness, Bruce was also pleased with that element as he knows we need everybody for the season run in - whilst also having praise for the way the Under 23 lads who stepped up in recent games when called upon.

'To be fair to the lads who were playing, they`ve done great. We`ve had nine or 10 missing from the first team and the lads who`ve come in have won five out of six, so a big pat on the back to them. But it`s good to see that my big players are starting to get fit again.'

There was obviously praise for the return of Hogan, as Bruce did think we may have lost him for the season, but he knows what a boost opening his account against Wigan will be for our January capture moving forward.

'It`s great for him. We thought he was going to be out for the season when he turned his ankle at Newcastle. He`s got his first goal and I`m sure it will be the first of many. We just need to get him up and at it and obviously work on a partnership between him and Kodjia.'

It was dire to be fair, come out losing that you'd be fuming. But the 3 points is the main aim and so you come out happy (or for some happier at least!)

Why is 3 points the main aim for a team in 12th, we won't reach the play-offs and we won't get relegated, so surely the main aim is to build a side where good football is the priority going towards the end of the season in prep for next. Good football will always beat struggling teams like Wigan and before I'm accused of not wanting us to win or being pessimistic, that's not at issue what's at issue is we struggled to beat them.
