Lambert Pleased With Start

Lambert Pleased With Start

Following the scoreless draw with Newcastle today, manager Paul Lambert has waxed lyrical about our start to the current season.

Speaking to the Official Site after watching us fail to register an attempt even near to the target, the gaffer decided to focus on the positives defensively.

Speaking about our two Premiership games so far, he explained.

'To pick up four points from six is a terrific start for us, the start we have made has been really good. We've certainly taken the challenge on this season. Today, I thought we were excellent - in the first half we were excellent, all we needed was a finishing touch. Newcastle came down here last season and did a job on us. I don't think anyone could begrudge us getting something out of that game. We had chances and I couldn't ask for any more effort.'

Lambert continues in pretty much the same vain saying that tactically he feels we've had it spot on in the two games so far, but clearly it's blindingly obvious we were missing any serious attempt on goal.

'Fair play to them, they've been excellent. I couldn't fault the way we played. We were resolute, it's another clean sheet and there were some really big performances there. Today all we needed was a finishing touch.'

Focusing more on the defence, he had huge credit for the 'back five' saying we are definitely a lot 'tougher' now compared to previous seasons, but two clean sheets so far is a testament to not only the defence, but also the efforts of midfield to plug gaps and chase back.

One big positive obviously was the second half introduction of newbie Carlos Sanchez, and for the manager, whilst he knows he still has some way to go to really get into top shape and form, he was very pleased with his energy levels and fitness given he's only really been back in training for a fortnight so he's expecting good things from him moving forwrd.

'He was fantastic, it doesn't faze him. He's going to be a massive player and it was great to have Joe Cole on the bench. I've got no doubts Carlos will adjust to the pace of it when he finds his feet.'

In further quotes carried by the Birmingham Mail, he also expanding on the 'finishing touch' debate, saying he was just happy we were creating opportunities, and he's sure - especially when the return of Libor Kozak and Christian Benteke, that this will soon change in our favour.

With Leyton Orient up next in the Capital One Cup in midweek, he added.

'We want to win it and we'll pick a strong team to try and get through. A good cup run gives the fans something.'

Thankfully, presumably it's not a distraction then this year, because winning breeds confidence and the more of that we can have hopefully will make all the difference moving forward.

anyone know why nzgobia was taken off as he was our main creative threat?bizarre decision to bring a defensive midfielder on for him when he could have given cole or grealish a runout.when cissoko went off why bring baker on when delph could have played l/b for last ten minutes and lambert could have brought on an attack minded player as he had sanchez and westwood in much longer do we have to put up with agbonlahors inept displays,he doesn't justify a starting place neither does weimann, both carried on where they left off last season, poor players who think they are better than what they are.other than that defence looks more solid and reliable, still weak in midfield but hopefully sanchez sorts out the physicality side of things.lambert still coming out with speil after not have a single shot at villa park is nothing short of disgraceful, newcastle were there for the taking today and lambert bottled his team selection.lets hope roy keane can exert his influence on lamberts stubborness to continually pick his favourites.watched the match from my local pub, having not renewd my s/t,i feel justified having not to make the 140 mile trip to watch zero creativity, theres not enough there to make me commit to a season ticket.poor crowd aswell,i think theres a few thousand odd s/t holders whove done the same thing. out of interest anyone know how many s/t's have been sold????

A good team needs a solid foundation, starting in defence. Two games played, two clean sheets and good performances from all the back five with Delphi and Westwood playing their parts. Sanchez showed glimpses of what we can expect to see. When Benteke and Kozak are back and match fit I think we will be able to surprise a few people. For the first time in years I feel optimistic about what's to come.

Ziggy came off because he was on a yellow and looked as if he was about to pick up another booking. 9000 season tickets eh? Well each one of those 9000 fans need to have a pat on the back for being true Villains that stick with their team throughout thick and thin. We don't need people who pick and choose seasons.

I have to say I agree. We are lacking up front with two of our strikers injured but the rest has been much improved. Just having experience on the field has made us a lot more solid. I like the Richardson signing, He looks like he will work hard for the shirt. Cissoko and Senderos have been good aswell. Shame we don't have a goal threat at the moment but It is a big relief to have some genuine positives to talk about.

I agree with Richard regarding the substitutions.... usual mix of bizarre and bewildering, plus Gabby and Weimann are a waste of a shirt... or two.

Good call PiperUk. Where is Okore? I'm surprised he is not on the bench at least. It scares me when Baker has to come on. Much like everyone else I'd really like to see Weimann and Agbonglahor dropped. Bent was on for 15 minutes and looked more dangerous than both of them. Bring in bent and cole or grealish for the cup game.

Well we look better than last season that's for sure, and still have Benteke and Kozak to come back, plus maybe another signing. But as been said already, the defence looks solid for the first time in ages and that's a huge thing
