Lambert - All About Fitness Not Results -

Paul Lambert has insisted that the pre-season friendlies only matter for fitness and the results are irrelevant.

Villa, following the Chesterfield 3-1 Aston Villa match last week, lost 4-1 at FC Groningen yesterday.

Lambert says "I can`t believe I`m still in this job"... whoops, sorry... my mistake, that was me thinking that...

The Villa boss actually said: 'The result wasn't the most important thing. It's about getting fitness levels. The result is irrelevant. We are still some weeks away from our first game. These matches don't matter results-wise. I have said that from the beginning. The fitness levels are the most important thing."

Yup, three times 'the results don`t matter`.

He goes on to explain Groningen are a good team and ahead of them in fitness (they were beaten by Aberdeen the other week) and promises Villa will be ready v Stoke.

I suppose I could say results have never really mattered for this particular manager but best not?!?!?

I do agree that pre-season is all about fitness, however it should also be about confidence building one would suspect and these sort of losses can`t help that. However, it isn`t the time to panic, it is about fitness. Fitness is all that matters at this stage.

Yup, I can say things three times as well! I actually do mean it this time though! Get fit, get ready and woe betide him any excuses come the new season v the teams we can compete against (ie I`ve not got unrealistic expectations thanks to the shambles Randy Lerner has presided over)

The team fielded was: Given, Baker (Herd 73), Clark (Stevens), Weimann (N'Zogbia 69), Agbonlahor (Grealish 73), Westwood (Gardner 73), Delph (El Ahmadi 69), Richardson, Bent (Bacuna 69), Hutton, Senderos (Okore 69).

when did losing become aceptable in any sport? Losing is a habit just like winning is ! My blood is starting to boil with this mumbling idiot still in charge .

How long will it take for this clown to realise that Baker and Clarke can be the fittest men in the world but they'll NEVER be footballers? Will the excuse after 3 games = 3 losses be "fitness is the important thing!" when will being able to play football, being able to pass a ball 5 yards and tactics play a part? We gained vital points last season against some REAL "big" clubs that kept us up(Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea) we won't be doing that this season!

I looked at that result and thought how the f*** have we lost 4-1 to That team. Then i saw the line-up.... What do we expect when we play Clark, Baker & Hutton in the same defence (i expect that Senderos is awful aswell but haven't seen him play) especially without Vlaar. The only way that Clark or Baker looked any good last season was along side Vlaar who is a true leader. Hopefully none of these players get a game this season i would much prefer Richardson, Okore, Vlaar & Bacuna/Lowton - that defence might actually be able to do some defending. If Hutton plays at RB for the majority of the season we will not be so lucky this year (Worst RB i have ever seen, and we've had some awful ones!). Saying all this we should have scored at least more than 1 goal! I think N'zogbia might have a wigan like effect this season and be a one man team and keep us up (at least i hope he does)

I think big Rons form in the World Cup says it all. He played next to quality players in the World Cup where he had baker and Clark at villa.Randy Lerners neglect of the villa could be reversed if somebody else buys the club but with Paul lambert and Roy keane we could have real problems this season

I could accept the usual 'results don't matter' sctick if there was some semblance of a cohesive performance, but I watched the match and we didn't get out of our half for 70 mins, spending the majority of the game chasing shadows and looking clueless.

I have never backed Villa to lose but this year I reckon this bunch to go down is nailed on and I might just do it.

If they were under pressure all game that will gave given them lots of exercise. Fitness levels increased! Job' done! ;-)

I actually agree with you Brian, Paul Lambert can only pay crap wages he has no money to transfer quality players (and of course they wouldnt accept the wages) so hebuying what he can. Dug Ellis had a revolt from the supporters with the way he handled the club Lerner seems to have got away with it. Without doubt he must go down as one of the worst owners (short of the crim in the other place) in the premier and most of the dissent from the fans is aimed at Lambert. Lerner is responsible for this debacle of results and poor footballers he also appointed the blithering idiot from small heath Dont know what the answer is proberly a monied new owner who wants to spend a bit in january we can only hope

Chelsea, Man City, West Ham and Arsenal all lost. Stoke could only draw at Blackburn. Clearly crap teams who are destined for relegation! :)
