'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lambert - All About Fitness Not Results -

Paul Lambert has insisted that the pre-season friendlies only matter for fitness and the results are irrelevant.

Villa, following the Chesterfield 3-1 Aston Villa match last week, lost 4-1 at FC Groningen yesterday.

Lambert says "I can`t believe I`m still in this job"... whoops, sorry... my mistake, that was me thinking that...

The Villa boss actually said: 'The result wasn't the most important thing. It's about getting fitness levels. The result is irrelevant. We are still some weeks away from our first game. These matches don't matter results-wise. I have said that from the beginning. The fitness levels are the most important thing."

Yup, three times 'the results don`t matter`.

He goes on to explain Groningen are a good team and ahead of them in fitness (they were beaten by Aberdeen the other week) and promises Villa will be ready v Stoke.

I suppose I could say results have never really mattered for this particular manager but best not?!?!?

I do agree that pre-season is all about fitness, however it should also be about confidence building one would suspect and these sort of losses can`t help that. However, it isn`t the time to panic, it is about fitness. Fitness is all that matters at this stage.

Yup, I can say things three times as well! I actually do mean it this time though! Get fit, get ready and woe betide him any excuses come the new season v the teams we can compete against (ie I`ve not got unrealistic expectations thanks to the shambles Randy Lerner has presided over)

The team fielded was: Given, Baker (Herd 73), Clark (Stevens), Weimann (N'Zogbia 69), Agbonlahor (Grealish 73), Westwood (Gardner 73), Delph (El Ahmadi 69), Richardson, Bent (Bacuna 69), Hutton, Senderos (Okore 69).

when did losing become aceptable in any sport? Losing is a habit just like winning is ! My blood is starting to boil with this mumbling idiot still in charge .
How long will it take for this clown to realise that Baker and Clarke can be the fittest men in the world but they'll NEVER be footballers? Will the excuse after 3 games = 3 losses be "fitness is the important thing!" when will being able to play football, being able to pass a ball 5 yards and tactics play a part? We gained vital points last season against some REAL "big" clubs that kept us up(Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea) we won't be doing that this season!
I looked at that result and thought how the f*** have we lost 4-1 to That team. Then i saw the line-up.... What do we expect when we play Clark, Baker & Hutton in the same defence (i expect that Senderos is awful aswell but haven't seen him play) especially without Vlaar. The only way that Clark or Baker looked any good last season was along side Vlaar who is a true leader. Hopefully none of these players get a game this season i would much prefer Richardson, Okore, Vlaar & Bacuna/Lowton - that defence might actually be able to do some defending. If Hutton plays at RB for the majority of the season we will not be so lucky this year (Worst RB i have ever seen, and we've had some awful ones!). Saying all this we should have scored at least more than 1 goal! I think N'zogbia might have a wigan like effect this season and be a one man team and keep us up (at least i hope he does)
I think big Rons form in the World Cup says it all. He played next to quality players in the World Cup where he had baker and Clark at villa.Randy Lerners neglect of the villa could be reversed if somebody else buys the club but with Paul lambert and Roy keane we could have real problems this season

I could accept the usual 'results don't matter' sctick if there was some semblance of a cohesive performance, but I watched the match and we didn't get out of our half for 70 mins, spending the majority of the game chasing shadows and looking clueless.
Fat Bob
i guess they aint fit to play football then

I have never backed Villa to lose but this year I reckon this bunch to go down is nailed on and I might just do it.
If they were under pressure all game that will gave given them lots of exercise. Fitness levels increased! Job' done! ;-)

What do people expect the manager to say....i know were s>>t,but I didnt buy that defence, our youth system doesnt deliver bar the odd one every 5 years,I cant buy anyone good cos the money isnt there,my only two decent forwards are injured, and I really want a good midfielder or two to ge with Delph but had to make do with Joe Cole.Of course hes gonna come out with platitudes,he CANT say what he really thinks,he has to try and bolster the confidence of the players he has....

I actually agree with you Brian, Paul Lambert can only pay crap wages he has no money to transfer quality players (and of course they wouldnt accept the wages) so hebuying what he can. Dug Ellis had a revolt from the supporters with the way he handled the club Lerner seems to have got away with it. Without doubt he must go down as one of the worst owners (short of the crim in the other place) in the premier and most of the dissent from the fans is aimed at Lambert. Lerner is responsible for this debacle of results and poor footballers he also appointed the blithering idiot from small heath Dont know what the answer is proberly a monied new owner who wants to spend a bit in january we can only hope

Chelsea, Man City, West Ham and Arsenal all lost. Stoke could only draw at Blackburn. Clearly crap teams who are destined for relegation! :)
Have you guys actually seen Hutton play in the pre-season games since he's been back in the team? And if you have and still think he's a worse option than Lowton or Bacuna, you're having a giraffe. A new LB and CM is fundamental for Villa to avoid relegation this season.
I hope some of the players we are going to rely on to keep us up don't read comments on here, that would do wonders for their confidence. I reckon RL reads them, he's read the abuse and decided to get while the getting's good. He tried, he invested, he has been let down by managers, players, fans, and lady luck herself. I say; let the man go with some dignity, he deserves it. I also reckon we'll be fine this season.
Im afraid i cant agree with you Andy, when he first arrived he really did some good things, training ground, acorns, etc, but he has lost interest, made some really bad managerial appointments, and is now letting the team wither as he tries to recoup as much of his investment as he was his idea to buy the club,no one twisted his arm, running a football club is like no other business, and he was found wanting,he will go with some losses, however he will still have a few hundred mill to play with,us fans invest as much emotionally and in many cases proportionally income wise,(guy on 250 quid a week spending 50/60 quid to go down the villa is investing MORE pro rata than Randy did)we are entitled to our say. As for the players as an old semi pro myself i can tell you they know they cant please all the fans all the time and grow a thick skin,.....

Firstly, this was a pre season game with nothing like a recognizable first team played so the result while disappointing is less important. However all of those folks on here defending Lambert and pointing to lack of funds need to consider for a moment the reality that is the complete absence of any style of play being developed during these preseason games, no formations or tactics designed to leverage the limited talent we have. There are countless examples from league football over the years and the recent world cup served as a reminder of how inferior players can perform as a unit to overcome far better teams and collectively bat above their weight with the right tactics, formations and motivation. Lambert has proven since day one that he is completely and utterly incapable of adding anything in any of those areas and this preseason is simply providing further evidence.
So it's all about fitness is it? So what is the measure of that? By virtue of the fact we lost 4-1 is the conclusion that we are unfit? Or perhaps if it's all about fitness we should judge it by how many players played the full in conclusion Given and Richardson are fit! hurrah!
I did see Hutton play (and train) in Texas. He looked fit, hungry, and put good shifts in. I think if we play with a back 3/5 he could be a very good wing-back.
Fitness and determining a style of play and tactics which you utilise during the season supposedly is what pre seasons is all about....very little evidence of any of the above...our back 4/5 with no protection or in fact with very little ability as players in their own right will be our undoing yet again. I can see it, millions of others can but those that can do something about it fail to do so. Frustrating
Guys, if Lambert is so good and doing such a great job on a shoestring with crap players etc isn't it amazing that he hasn't been snapped up by another prem or european club who can also see, like us genius's that he is a championship winner just waiting for the right club to come along. Me, i'm with AVb, I think he's s**t.
