Lambert - We Were Excellent

Sorry, I just had a flash back to last season when I read the words 'we were excellent' but at least earlier this morning with a two nil win over FC Dallas and the fact the scoreline could've and possibly should've been higher, I'll let him off.

Speaking to the Official Site following the victory with goals coming from Andi Weimann and Charles N'Zogbia, Paul Lambert explained.

'It was a really tough game for us. We're not long started back for pre season, obviously Dallas have played a lot of league games, so it was difficult. One of the big factors in their favour was the heat. We're certainly not used to that - the conditions were really, really tough. I have never experienced heat like this. It's really tough, even when you're walking around. It's pretty exhausting at times.'

Should've stayed in England this week then, I've been breaking into a sweat simply by breathing - although that might say more about me to be fair.

'I was delighted with the two teams I put out. I thought we dominated the second half, but it was a hard game overall. The first half was tough because the heat was greater in that period, but the lads were resolute. We were strong defensively and never really got hurt.'

As for the goals, some fans might recoil when they read this given their previous words about Darren Bent, but Lambert says.

'Andi scored a very good goal. Darren did great for it. The second goal was a top class finish. I thought the goal from Charles was first class, it was a well taken goal.'

Of course the main and only aim at the moment is fitness and getting the lads in top shape for the season ahead, but Lambert admits that developing a winning mentality and the confidence that brings at this stage of the season is no bad by product especially when the performance deserves it even at this early stage.

Of course, with the win against Mansfield and now the win over FC Dallas, Villa have also gone two games undefeated and I really don't think we've said that often lately.

I watched the game via Dallas FC and Villa were good then got better. The mighty Stoke narrowly beat DFC last year when Dallas were on a low and a losing streak. We completely dominated them this year and they are on a high, not losing in eight games. Grealish and Stevens looked superb first half and we only got stronger in the second. While you are correcting errata - I think you need to look at this... 'developing a winning mentality and the confidence that breaks'. I know we are talking about the Villa here but surely even we find winning brings confidence?

What I seen of the game we was very good, let's not mince words we need to be better when the season kicks off because the league is getting stronger and teams coming up are spending big to stay in the league so we should be matching of following suite so we're not struggling all season......!

I've just returned to NYC from Dallas. Yes 444, Bent was VERY unselfish for Weimann's goal. A quick attack after Herd got a good tackle in just inside his own half. Bent picked up the loose ball and ran at the defence, Andi made a good run to drag the defence out of shape and Bent played him a nice ball. Say what you want about the bad wall on the free kick, but the finish was class and the free kick was created by a superb and direct run behind the defence by Gabby. BOTH left backs looked very good (Stevens and Bennet) and overall the performance was decent, especially given the fact that it was too hot for words (91 Fahrenheit at kick off!). I really do wish our small group of fans in the corner would stop singing filth-laced songs about BCFC though! We are Aston Villa, and a bit more of the pro-villa stuff would have left the locals entertained instead of the looks of disgust/horror/confusion! Ah well, can't have everything I suppose....

I sometimes think these friendlies against weaker opposition are only designed to make us look good until we the hit the PL season....then BANG!, reality brings us back down to earth......

When i was searching for live feeds of this game i went on to the Dallas FC website and the game was being billed as Dallas FC Reserves V Aston Villa. Don't know if any of our US Soccer followers can shed some light on this. Villa did look good and i'm glad to see Zoggy get on the score sheet.
