Mountfield - Senderos Can Shine

Mountfield - Senderos Can Shine

Derek 'The Moustache' Mountfield has said that he expects Philippe Senderos to make Villa Park his 'home' and really show how good a player he can be, but he has to cut out the errors that have plagued him so far in England.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail with our new 29 year old centre half away in Brazil on international duty for Switzerland, Mountfield said that in some ways the reputation for errors that Senderos has is unfair on him, because all players switch off at points, but he's now at an age where he can really shine, show what he's capable of, and cut out those mistakes.

'One of the criticisms of him is he can be prone to making errors, but so can a lot of other defenders. I think, sometimes, Senderos suffered because some of his mistakes were so high profile, especially when you are just starting out in the Premier League at Arsenal. Over the years he's put in some good performances and some not so good performances but you've never had the feeling he's been really settled anywhere.'

Being settled, comfortable and really happy Mountfield adds could be key to him increasing his awareness levels and consistency, and stopping the mistakes he has been making so he can really perform to his best and no longer let himself down at times.

'Maybe Villa can be that place that feels like home for him. Villa have needed that experience because some of the young defenders have struggled at times. But he needs to go there and be commanding, solid and reliable, because he's not going to have anybody looking after him.'

If we can get the solid Senderos out on the pitch regularly he's going to be asset even if he's not a signing that has really received much excitement so far, but between him and Ron Vlaar, they should both be able to really help Jores Okore, Nathan Baker and Ciaran Clark to develop properly, without so much pressure constantly on them.

Then we'll really find out if they can live up to their earlier potential as the introduction over the last few years for the latter two certainly hasn't been how you should introduce young inexperienced centre halves to the Premier League, or any league really that matter.

We don't know what other signings we might have in store yet, but at least on the experience count Senderos and Joe Cole, if we can get them at their best, do tick those boxes somewhat for us and should have an impact, and at least it shows we are now looking at the balance of age and experience within the team in a far better light, and hopefully whilst everything else about the club remains up in the air, that will at least count for those extra 10 points we want to make league life a little bit more secure and less bum twitchy in 2014-15.

I agree with the main thrust of the article, and the final mention that we may be ten points better come the end of next season. Let's sit back, crack a bottle, watch some football and wait to see what we get when the season of craaazzzyyy football brings us.

Came on as a sub last night, 5 goals conceded. Not rated by fans of previous clubs, given away by a club subsequently relegated last season. Should fit right in. Another mediocre player who I suspect is not better than we have got. Lescott was a much better option, and Lambert has stood still and watched him join the baggies. I have to believe that is the case, because otherwise we are financially inferior to West Brom, which doesn't bear thinking about. I hope Okore fully recovers, and fulfills his early promise, because otherwise we are so screwed. Left back is still a huge problem too. Lerner must release some funds if the sale does not go through soon, because we wont be worth much as a Championship side.
