Joe Cole To Aston Villa?

Not got a massive amount of detail on this but according to Sky Sports Joe Cole is set to have a medical and join Aston Villa on a free!

Great player in his day, but how have all the injuries impacted?

Looks like Lambert, after two dire seasons, has realised you need experience in the team, is this the right sort of experience?

Well, to be fair, we don't know the budget now Randy has lost interest and is trying to offload us, so difficult to say.

Decent edition under the circumstances. We need experience and he has it at the top level. It's about staying up until we get taken over now. If it needs to be done like this then I will accept it.
Bikini Inspector
It's not going to get much better than this under the circumstances, so I'm happy with this signing. Fascinated to see who else we can get, it's like we're that team in Moneyball!
Stephen Jay Hawkings
I'm out of things to say. Another experienced player coming in, when is it all going to end. This must mean a realisation that the fixation on playing young players without the backbone of older players was a mistake.
HonestDave
From a Kindergarten to a retirement home. Could this get any stranger.
Villa_Grizzly
As "the youngster" in a team he had pace and vision, the ability to go pass defenders, and a good shot. That's when we wanted MON to buy him. As a more mature player he will offer less of the above, his experience would be invaluable though. Not bad. Next? Well, who else is out there? Any suggestions, any once-world-class player/coaches. Please make a few suggestions.

I can't believe he's only 32!!!
ormskirk
Shoking News ! I'm afraid Cole past his sellby date some years ago as West Ham have found out - hence no new contract.
Pancho Villan
last season the policy was to sign young hungry players at a high tempo blah blah blah, now its turned full circle, now the policy is to sign hasbeens and injury prone players without a point to prove.senderos in my opinion is useless,he will fit in nicely with the calamity defence.joe cole basically is a game way from being injured and i cant remember the last decent game he had and that must have been at chelsea a long long time ago.riveting stuff who next i hear bendters on the radar.
Richard Cassidy
Barry, Parker, Lescott would do the job andy. These old codgers can play the football and the youngsters can do the running.
Bikini Inspector
Cole is a great signing if he stays fit, he can pass a ball batter than most of our squad and would play the role behind the strikers really well. 56 England caps and 10 goals shows he is a quality player and at 32 we can get a couple good seasons out if him if he stays fit. Even if he cant play full games he will be a great players to bring on for the last twenty minutes.
aston.villafc
Lescott would be great for LB now and then just a very good DM and our squad will be starting to look a lot more promising for a top half finish.
aston.villafc
Three or four years too late, I'm afraid.
Beovilla
I don't know where the 32 comes he was born in 1980. That makes him 34 by my recogningj
HonestDave
He was born in November '81, so he'll be 33 in November.
Stephen Jay Hawkings
Two year contract ?, along with Senderos these signings aren't exactly installing confidence for next season if we continue to play in the same style as last few seasons. We still need someone in the forward line, Benteke apart our forwards don't score enough goals with the chances they get, the likes of Weimann and Gabby should be far more prolific in the goals department !!!
Eddy1
Merse came to us when he was 30, I think and everyone said he was past it at the time. Let's hope 32 (nearly 33) is the new 30 and he can have as much of an impact as Merson did.
Rawlie
Merse was different class Rawlie. Not sure this signing is even in the same ballpark. After Senderos, this has depressed me even further. Every article you read it talks about thedesperate financal situation at Vila, shopping in the bargain basement, etc, etc....it's embarrassing.
YatesyVillan
Hardly inspiring this signing. I seem to recall the last Cole we got from Wetspam was a shocker! I hope Joe turns out to be a steal but just can't see it myself.
holte ender 1969
Having tried and failed with young crap, he's now trying old crocks. Bostin!
Saurat
So we're left with car boot sales now, thanks to Lerner. John Inman is free too..... oh, wait.......
Pride of Lions
Agree Pancho if he can't do it for his home town club he won't do it for us . Desperation rules

The Fear
one thing with Cole, unlike some of the other guff we have, at least on his day he can do something exciting and he might entertain with the odd great shot (I don't even look for goals anymore, just shots!). As Rawlie says, Merse wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms until he showed he was up for it! I do worry Cole has been released at his last three clubs and also his fitness though.
The Fear
Free, low wages, a win win for us. Hardly a risk. If he doesn't play well - he doesn't play. Not happy, but not that unhappy either.
jsmccue
He said he's not playing for money as he's financially sound and just wants to play football and prove his worth. So we know he's not a mercenary and wants to give us 100%. That's good enough in my book. Get Hoolahan and I would be confident of staying up till the club's sold.
briann11
thanks lerner for being the most clueless billionaire around. while your on your summer holiday flying around in your private jet. just think about the misery such a charitable man like your self has put on fans into 2 sports ventures, and also how many families lost their home with the crazy rates your credit card company charged..... joe cole failed at west ham, why is he exactly going to perform with us???? its clear to see keane is our number 2 who is going to have to work miracles with a bunch of inadequate and cheap premiership players. shocking years ahead of us... really if we dont sell, which signs now are showing that no one is interested. we will have some real relegation battles ahead of us.
Ali Arab
I really wanted Cole in our team when MON was here and he was out of favor. Even though he's older now I still think he has something to offer to our squad. The bottom line is that we need this new owner and fast. What is going on? I've heard nothing solid. Surely a team with such a illustrious past playing in the best league in the world is an attractive buy for some filthy rich person out there? I'd buy us if I could!
AdzVilla11
I'm fed up mummy I need a new toy, your a **** Lerner full stop.
Eltoro
Looks like Lerner does not expect to find a buyer soon, and so he's signing out-of-contract players on short deals to see Villa through the interregnum.
OnMeHeadFred
Good quotes from Cole "My relationship with West Ham is great, but obviously it didn't work towards the end of this season and I didn't play enough. "So, I'm just going to take my time over the summer and find the right fit. "At this stage of my career, finances are not important for me. I want to enjoy my football, I want to compete and I just want to play more."
aston.villafc
Might as well sign pele, fits our new vision.
Ali Arab
You said you wanted experience...
PiperUK
Other than passing on tricks to the yoots, he's next to useless. NEVER had pace and that's why he had to learn a trick or 2. Never been strong really either and what little he had of both have diminished with age plus the fact that the game is a lot faster than 12 years ago and everyone is much fitter, quicker, stronger.
Villan444
Great signing seeing as we are clearly only going for Bosmans. Welcome to Villa, Joe. Yeah he was released, but by Big Sam who is not exactly known for his love of creative flair players. Quite enjoying this weird rollercoaster we seem to be on at the moment. Nuthin to be gained by moaning about how "we're supposed to be a big club" so might as well just enjoy the ride. With Joe, Jack and (maybe) Hoolihan we seem to have a lot of what I like to call number 10s...
Desert Villan
The circumstances/financial restraints have been the same for a couple of years, but now it's Randy getting the grief and not Lambert LOL !!! Merson was a demi-God so no comparisons here please.
Villan444
He offers something different and creativity with experience. Injury prone so in his twilight worth a 2 year contract if we can keep him fit. As for Senderos. Didn't we pick up the wrong scandi? Surely Hangerland would have been a better 'free-agent' to snap up?!
leelindsay
At least we have a player who can play in the hole and hopefully thread a few passes through. Still leaves us SO lightweight in the middle! we need a presence in there who can actually hold onto a football.
simont123
Merson was great... but no one knew the player we were getting! He was good but troubled at Arsenal, had some good years at 'Boro and came to us at 30 with most thinking he'd be past his sell by date. Who knows what Joe Cole will be like for us, but if the ball starts going through him it's gotta be better than Baker's 50 yard punts into the opposition goalie's hands!
Rawlie
Another player who came to us when he was 30 was an injury riddled drunk who turned out to be the most complete footballer I've had the pleasure to see at VP. Now I KNOW people weren't exactly jumping up and down with joy when the great one joined, but they soon changed their minds. We've got a good record of taking on older 'problem' players and getting the best out of them for a time! For me JC adds something we've been missing and if he's played in the central AM position (and is up for it), it should be good!
Rawlie
