Tonev Confident For Next Season

Aleksandar Tonev has admitted his first season at Aston Villa has been difficult, but he has confidence that things will turn around for him next campaign.

Having joined us from Lech Posnan following a recommendation by Stiliyan Petrov, the reported 2.5million signing has gone on to make 20 appearances in his first season, but the vast majority were from the bench and we all know he likes a shot, but we definitely haven't seen more than maybe glimpses of what he could be capable of.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail the Bulgarian basically admitted he knew that was the case, but he had confidence in his own ability and believes fans will see far more of him next season.

'I'm confident I will have more impact next season. I would like to think I will one day be at Stiliyan Petrov's level for both Villa and Bulgaria. I hoped I would play more but I obviously needed time to adapt. But now I feel far more confident.'

Tonev goes on to say it was obviously difficult when he first joined us, it was a new club, a new country and he had to learn a new language to try and fit in and settle at the club, but now he finally feels comfortable with everything around him, and he feels that will be key to him kicking on properly next season.

'Maybe I still need more time but I feel much better. I really enjoyed training and I love to play in games. The Premier League is very hard but I feel I have settled in.'

Given his penchant for 'letting fly' in some ways is a shame that more ended up at the corner flag or out of the stadium, because the confidence boost he would've gained from scoring really could've made all the difference to him, but hopefully he'll get that feeling in pre season and then be able to take that through into games for us.

'Last season was disappointing but I believe we will do much better next season. It's a pity we went out of the two cups at an early stage but in those competitions there is always the chance we might win a trophy.'

I like him already, he wants a cup!

Whilst looking through my telescope I identified his shot against Spurs passing Capiopa at an orbiting trajectory. It's still moving steadily.

Haha Griz... I only seen him get 1 shot on target so 2 would be a massive improvement. Hopefully Nzog can teach him something from his Wigan days.

Work hard lad and with luck you'll make it out of the Worst 10 Villa Players Of All Time list. I won't hold my breath though.

It sometimes takes a player a while to settle. The fact that he was recommended by Stan mean I'll give him more time. Hopefully he'll show more next season.
Pride of Lions
He obviously hasn't set the world alight but thought he did OK at times with his energy etc. Surely he should be passing and moving more to get into better positions to shoot although he might pull shots off in training. If he gets an easy one in, he may find his range and start scoring from everywhere.
Villan444
Well, he couldn't show any less could he.
Villa_Grizzly
Agree with Villan444 - he showed an energy similar to Albrighton but his final ball was abysmal. If he can improve on that there may yet be a little diamond somewhere in there.

I think being recommended by his brother in law makes a big difference.ha
