Can We Put Solskjaer To Bed Now Please?

When all the dust had settled following us speaking to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the vacant managerial position head of the appointment of Paul Lambert, his own words were important in understanding how things played out.

For many who see a conspiracy at every corner the fact he didn't take the job was proof positive that Villa weren't good enough to attract a manager with under 50 managerial games to his name at the point. Afterall we sent a jet to speak to him, he must have been the number one choice.

Never understood that actually, Steve McLaren wanted to speak to us, a manager with great experience, international experience but he spoke Dutch once and nobody rated him so it doesn't count. Not that we filled ourselves with glory there either when cancelling the meeting.

The club saying at the time other candidates were being spoken to was just a smokescreen, and the fact Ole had never met our board previously obviously can't have meant it was just a meet and greet and an informal interview as all parties admitted to at the time.

Because we are back to the jet aren't we...Ole had a free few days ahead of their next match, so convenience couldn't figure and it would've been more professional to book him on Easyjet.

Anyway I'm presuming the quotes doing the rounds today are more recent and are from one of the many interviews he's done ahead of tonight's game at the Cardiff City Stadium, but they are eerily similar to what he said first time round.

'I spoke with Mr Lerner but it wasn't the right time, so I thought there was no point to follow that up with more discussions. My family didn't fancy moving and it would not have been right for me to come to the Premier League after winning two league titles. But I am better prepared now after more experiences as a manager.'

Fans with long memories will also recall him at the time removing himself from any additional interviews after the informal meet, citing the above same reasons, and also it would be remiss to factor in Molde's sponsors throwing a bit of fit over the thought of losing him as well.

He did however still say to press in Norway that until he was offered the job formally, he had no decision to make anyway. He pulled out of further chats, not a job offer.

Now for some that won't carry a distinction - he turned us down full stop, and even worse he turned us down before we discussed any real business with him, finances, aims and so on.

For others, maybe it'll prove what we knew all along.

One thing is for sure tonight, it's the perfect opportunity for Paul Lambert to give the fans something to cheer about, show Ole he made a mistake and show that he was the better option for us...then maybe we can look at consistency!

As for team news tonight given this has a Cardiff theme, Lambert was set to give Ron Vlaar a late fitness test to see whether he could come back into contention but there is no fresh news on that score so we'll have to wait for kick off.

As some have said Craig Bellamy is out with a suspension for tonight's game, but as others have pointed out we thought not facing Andy Carrol would be a bonus!

If anyone missed the Ole shenanigans, the coverage is in the archive for 2012, between May and July of the year.

No-one knows. Of course we can't put it to bed. You can't take one comment in the press as gospel. We'll have to wait for his memoirs.
mike what planet are you on. we were interested in him, if we were real madrid or man united. do you think he would have come out with my family blah blah. he did not want to work with lerner and aston villa. we are not a good proposition, as we are a big club with limited funds and wanna play championship wages to premier league players, very dangerous environment. and you mention steve mclaren lol, wow you really are lerners pet dog.
Ali Arab
and before you come out and say real madrid and man united, even everton, spurs. who in my eyes are our competition, he would have taken the position. for god sake he is working for triad Tan
Ali Arab
LOL couldn't have scripted it better PMSL
i guess you the kind of man that reads newspapaer like the sun and mirror and think its the gospel truth. OGS thought their was better things ahead. after us no one really came for him. hence, he went to cardiff. that my interpretation. wow youe interpretation of things is not that smart
Ali Arab
He didn't come, it's no problem. It doesn't matter who came with Lerner in charge....
Pride of Lions
Why would I want to put Solskjaer to bed??? Sorry, not into guys, but you live your life how you like Mike!

The Villa job is toxic. The resources just do not match the deluded expectations of the fans. Not a good choice for someone trying to learn his trade and build a reputation.
Agree Pride Any manager needs proper backing and also able to bring players into the club attracting them here depends on the wages offered nowadays Lerner must allow this in the summer no more excuses the cutbacks have been made for 4 bloody years now!
I wonder if OGS took advice from his mentor fergie on the prospect on joining villa, the same fergie that recommended McLeish to Lerner. The same fergie that has always been ruthless against us. Didn't we stop him winning the treble on season? I'm sure he hates us and this is his version of a footballing long con!
Who cares he wasnt and still wouldnt be capable of performing any miracles for us...
It's an unreasonable debate to have. If he had turned us down and the next day signed up with Cardiff that is one thing - we could then assume Cardiff offered better terms or better assurances etc. The fact he turned down the job citing personal reasons and then at a much later date, in presumably changed circumstances, took a different one, in no way is a snub to Villa. He might have been a good manager for us he might not. We'll never know. The jury is still out about the job he's doing at Cardiff (4 losses in last 8 games I think? That's same as Lambert then!) We don't know the facts, we will never know the facts, so why are we even talking about it?!
Inspector Mike clouseau is trying to put the case to bed. Really Mike don't give up your day job to become a cop. So obvious he turned us down.
Ali Arab
Oh dear.
villan of the north
Clouseau was always right in the end wasn't he :-) Said himself he wasn't offered the job, I'd make a great cop, I look for evidence and not my own preconceptions.
Its funny really, this was exactly what some of us said at the time, there was no major conspiracy, he'd just moved back to his home town etc etc etc. But this won't wash, the conspiracy theories are always more interesting. I heard Randy tripped him up as a joke and the baby faced assassin punched Randy in his Villa tattoo (un) true story folks. All went Pete Tong.
The Fear
oh and jeez, that photo of Ole is scary!
The Fear
he was offered the job, he thought better offers were on the card. nothing happened, he went to cardiff.. whats the conspiracy... so let me get this straight if someone says something, its true??? lerner out please.
Ali Arab
The potato story is true though.

Slightly ironic really Ali, the club, Ole himself and Molde I believed confirmed later there was no offer, yet because you say there was it's true???

I find that Quite Interesting, but I like Stephen Fry.

I do however agree with one of your earlier comments, we'll have to wait for Ole's memoirs as he can't say anything prior to that because it's a well known fact that whenever the club meet and speak to anyone the Official Secret's Act and a confidentiality agreement has to be signed between the first and third breath of shaking hands :-)

You know the first rule of meeting anyone from the Villa, is you don't talk about meeting anyone from the Villa. We've never quite got to the second rule because we are that badly run.
When I dump a girl. Would I tell her exactly why. Or just say a version that makes it sound less nasty or cruel. . Same as if a girl dumps me. It's called being polite in negotiations. Human nature.
Ali Arab
You go for an informal chat with prospective girlfriends before you decide whether to dump your current
i think he blanked us, you think we never offered him a job. we will leave it at that.
Ali Arab
