'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Lambert Furious With Second Half Defending

Manager Paul Lambert has given a very quick verdict on our two nil loss to West Ham this afternoon.

Villa went into the half time break not exactly looking good, and certainly not comfortable, but we were level and as a few on the match thread commented, we had hope that was going to be our 'bad half' of football, so things were set for the second 45 minutes to be a touch more exciting.

And they were.

Unfortunately by the time that happened though we were already two nil down.

We're all used to Lambert guffing after games and talking about how unlucky we were and all the rest of it, but today, he's focused perfectly on what we all saw when speaking to the Official Site.

'It was disappointing. The two goals were really disappointing. That's the thing, especially right after half time. I had just took my seat, then it was the long ball and we never dealt with it. It doesn't matter if you're young or experienced, you deal with it. That's just a long ball, we should've dealt with it better.'

But the annoyance wasn't over there.

'The second goal is a basic error. Then you come to life in the game. But the two goals were not good enough, they know my feelings, you can't defend that way.'

The gaffer goes on to say that we had a foothold in the game at half time, and more importantly the players were coming out for the second period 'attacking your favourite end, you think something can happen.'

And happen it did, some of them must have been wondering if they'd left the gas on when they left the dressing room and we are two nil down and buried....again.

I've just checked with all this blather about improvement. We have won (league) seven games all season. That's seven wins and we are now into the seventh month of the campaign. One a month woohoo! Since October specifically, we have won four. Not four at home, four fullstop.

'The two goals were not acceptable. The first puts you on the back foot, at 1-0 you have have 40 minutes where you can pull back, but then you're 2-0 down through an error and you're on the back foot even more.'

There was one positive, the introduction of Marc Albrighton, who again did his desire for first team football absolutely no harm whatsoever, and Lambert acknowledged that.

'When Marc came on, we picked up. We looked like we could get one, if we got one, you never know. Marc was a bright spark, he did great, he's hit the post and set up a chance for Chris when he hit the bar. He was a plus point and put in some balls that you would expect us to get on the end of.'

So presumably he'll be starting the next game then?

As for Ryan Bertrand, Lambert also confirmed that he came off in the second half with a rib injury, and at least on that score with the introduction of the almost forgotten Joe Bennett during his spell out injured, Bennett does look like he's bulked up a bit to me. I also don't think he did much wrong when he came on which is promising.

Difficult to judge admittedly as he didn't have long, we were almost all over them at the time and when they did break it was more often down the right...but in any case, let's hope Bertrand makes a quick recovery.

So we look to the next one again don't we. Surely our home form has to turn eventually?

Bikini Inspector
Bet you he leaves Albrighton out next match . Poor Marc has had to endure the two worst managers in the clubs prem history Eck and the current clown
A foothold? Did I watch a different game. Horrible anti football. Hating every minute at VP at the moment. Left before the final whistle, was happy to get out.

Dear God. What was that ? I'm at a loss to know who's at fault, the players, the management, the men who hold the purse strings ? That simply wasn't good enough. How much longer must we suffer this kind of sh**e ?
It's unfair to ask fans to fork out thousands of pounds a year and then serve up that s***e week in week out when the manager thinks it is acceptable
Why hasn't he been furious before now with the defence, as every game I've seen one of our players has given the ball away, given away a silly free kick or penalty that has led to a goal! Maybe he's running out of excuses
Stop whinging10
Lambert, no more ,just go ,, Dross, your team. How your still there as manager is a joke We are dire , please go,or the fans will Ters

I wonder how many season tickets will be sold for next season? I really feel for anyone that's forked out to sit there and watch the rubbish that has been served up for most of the season

What makes today worse is that West Ham were awful as well. We actually tried to play more football and passed it better than they did. Their defence was much better than ours though, no stupid mistakes. We were shocking until Albie came on. At least then we created quite a few chances and hit the woodwork twice. Really depressing. At least there are ten other awful teams in the League. Not sure there are three worse than us though
Another day of hoofball, except Mark Albie, pathetic tactics, pathetic manager and crap defending AGAIN
It just gets worse and worse. Go forth and multiply Lamberk!!!

I haven't seen anything of the game, so won't comment on the performances or tactics. The current level of criticism displayed here of the directors, management and players is not, to me, supporting the club. Why moan and grizzle about what you can't affect? Enjoy the trials and tribulations of being a Villan.
Poor Helenuis, sitting on the bench watching, not even getting a chance while watching a 31yr old league one player on loan play ahead of you. Good for the lads confidence huh, great management. Also he plays KEA while playing absolutely rubbish then he puts in his two best performances at Pool and against WB so PL drops him. Roll up the sleeves boys, the relegation battle is on.
Because Andy if we sit in silence they'll think its all sunshine and roses... We can affect things, there is a difference between support and mindless following...
I don't know why he hasn't come to the obvious conclusion that Albrighton could be that creative spark we desperately need. He may not be a number '10', but when he gets the ball he looks like he can make something happen.

Andy, if you'd seen the same **** today (and for the last 2 years) that we've send you might understand. Supporting the club is I thing and I don't doubt that everyone on here does but blind loyalty is something else. The most basic element of football is to pass to Teammate; we've only consistently passed to claret and blue shirts away - at wet spam!
Cheers Lamberk, now tell me about the 1st half when we were actually worse. Utter clown.
If we don't have a number 10 to create chances at home, then it doesn't take a genius to work out that we should use our width. Especially with a player like Benteke up front. The tactics that we started with make me really question PL's ability.
im the same gutted just under a grand holte end upper and you sit and watch a typical villa defensive performance clark what the ***** am i doing hold fire got it ***** im out of my depth. mid working there nuts off strikers not tuned in and deference 1st or second half still in the dressing room randy keep going son the club you love is breaking all barriers
Better sign your contract quick Lambert much more of this and even our board might notice. Even if we only drew our home games it would keep the pressure on these teams below us but gifting three points is suicide.
People can blame the players, Lambert, Lerner, Faulkner, Tactics, Transfers, etc. all they want. The simple truth of the matter is that the fear amongst the players when they have the ball at Villa Park is because of the hostile environment they are expected to play in. On Saturday, Villa's "12th man" was playing for West Ham, no question. As soon as we had the ball and started to pass it around and look for space to build an attack... the crowd were screaming for their heads. As soon as an attempted cross was over hit.. they were baying for blood. I could go on but you get the point. It was disgraceful. We don't play better away from home because we're on the counter, we play better because the team can concentrate on their football. Lambert isn't going anywhere, we aren't Champions of Europe and we don't have a Top 10 side yet. Supporters need to start supporting or we're doomed. The atmosphere is the only rotten thing at Villa Park.
Don't blame me HalfwayDoug, I don't get amongst the players!!!!
